    • What a Little Gem!
Purchased the RL-HM011J from Amazon for less than $20! It arrived within 2 days, perfect condition and well packaged. When I clipped it to the spark plug wire of my ZTR lawn mower, it provided the RPMs immediately. Surprisingly, the RPMs displayed matched identically to another Runleader hour/tach device I purchased and installed a week earlier (model: RL-HM011F). While both devices appear to be very precise and accurate (+/- 10 RPMs), for a few dollars more one can have the RL-HM011J model that has the alligator clip, warnings, back lighting, maintenance notices and a plethora of functions and metrics that can monitor various engine functions that can be either turned on of off. note: It is critical the proper engine configuration is selected in order for the tachometer to provide the correct readings. When I first used mine and saw my RPMs were a little lower than expected (3250 no load and 3170 under load), first thing I wanted to do was up the RPMs. However, via research I soon found that "most" lawn mower manufacturers do NOT set their mowers up to operate at the maximum RPMs per the engine manufacturer. To arbitrarily start tampering with engine speeds can upset manufacturer's torque curves, the speed with which your hydro static transmission (Hydro Gear, etc.) are set to operate (too high RPMs can ruin a hydrostatic transmission designed to run at lower RPMs) and per your deck design and blade pitch. These are all spec'ed by the manufacturer. However, if running below lawn mower manufacturer's spec. then an adjustment may be advised. In my case, my RPMs were in line with what manufacturer had spec'ed for this model and the beautiful cut it always delivers. Had to calibrate a new tachometer in a boat and this did the trick. Works as expected. Had to find the correct setting then all was well.

1 month and 5 days and we get a rain and now this product is ruining but it states its waterproof I'm glad I did not waste the time to throw the hose in my instrument panel on my lawn mower to mount this I try contacting the seller through razon Amazon says it's past the 30-day return point this product should last more than 30 days especially when it states that it's waterproof and shows it mounted in the open in the pictures I hope The seller contacts me and replaces the item so I can make a better review but at the moment this product is not worth my money and it was a waste of my money ... show more

It appears to be well engineered and made. I'll know more after running it for a few hours. Note to manufacturer!: The supplied battery had been jammed into place and damaged the side contact spring by crushing it flat. I was able to lift and straighten it by use of some of my dental tools but that should not have been needed. The side contact spring design needs an improved design revision to one that is less prone to damage during battery installation. The spring material is of very good quality but the sharp contact edge can be caught on the edge of the battery and then bent when battery is snapped into place. When that happens the battery no longer makes contact and the unit cannot work. ... show more

    • This is a nice tool for monitoring engine rpm on a small engnine, and to keep track of hours run.
I have been using these type of units for years on the lawn tractor, and on the sailboat 9.9 horse outboard. They are very useful and quite reasonably priced. This one has some more features, allowing you to see what the maximum rpm was while you used it, and what the highest rpm was the engine ever hit. It also will give you an alert when it is time to change the oil, and or do other maintenance. The battery is easy to replace, and it is the very common and inexpensive CR 2032 battery. Overall I like this engine monitor a lot, and I definitely recommend it! ... show more

Device didn’t work, defective. First one did not work so I ordered another one which was defective as well. Purchased a third one different brand works great. Can not recommend the runleader rpm checker/neter…

    • Didnt seem accurate to me.
Full speed lawn tractor was only reading 2200 rpm, idle 1700. Setup menu was a PIA to step through.
