I was skeptical at first after reading so many mixed reviews. It seems like people are as passionate about their coolers as they are their pickup trucks! After speaking with a buddy who has the Yeti Hopper 40 and hearing about its shortcomings (can't see inside well, can't pour melted ice out all the way, zipper tears up your skin), I ordered the RTIC 40 Soft Pack and have been pleased. It holds ice as long as I need it for, which is never more than a whole day or two out on the boat offshore. It's an excellent road-trip cooler to keep on the floor of my F150 behind the center console. When used in the truck, I don't even zip it closed, just flop the lid closed and it lasted over 9 hours without any loss of performance seemingly. The zipper is a little slow to open and close but the cooler has so many attributes that I feel its well worth the money. Easy to carry on the shoulder, or by the side handles, even like a grocery bag. I like that its soft but still rigid enough to hold it's shape perfectly. It holds a lot of drinks and ice for a day or two. I'd buy it again if I had to do it over.

Light weight and holds the cold well. The secret is packing it full. I travel long distance with frozen foods etc... and once it's full 5-7 hours later everything is still cold and frozen. This is my 2nd cooler like this. After years of overstuffing my last one the zipper finally broke!!! MY FAULT... I ordered another immediately. Worth every penny and just as good as other more expensive ones like Yeti... I also like the short and long handles allowing me to carry and move it easily. I'm petite and can handle this pretty easy when it's stuffed full.

I really like this cooler. The color is great, the build quality is great. They put some heavy-duty zippers on these things. It can fit a lot of food or beverages, but the one main problem is that it does not keep ice for very long. It is built with some really think insulation, but it doesn't seem to keep ice. Another problem is the zipper. As I mentioned, they are beefy, they give you some lubrication inside the cooler to apply on the zipper frequently, which I do. But if you have kids, they may not be able to get into the cooler on their own very easily. My wife even has a little bit of a hard time opening and closing the cooler because you really have to rake on that zipper pull to close it. All in all, I like the cooler, I just wish that it kept ice longer and the zipper was a little easier to open and close.

After watching many “ice melt” videos and reading a lot of reviews I purchased this cooler. I could not be more DISAPPOINTED. We used this for one long car trip (6 hours) and the food was all getting warm by the end. We used several RTIC ice packs which are supposed to be better than actual ice. This is our first soft pack cooler and I knew the performance would not be as good as my hard sided Yeti. But, I was shocked that this could not keep the food cold for one long trip. The zipper was completely closed but to be honest we did open it from time to time during the trip to get food out. From a build stand point, you can tell right away that this is not a nice as the Yeti brand. The material is just not the same. The padding on the inside does look nice and thick and it has a good 2 inch worth of padding on the lid which seems nice. The straps look durable but we didn’t really put it through its paces. The side material feels cheap. From the build perspective it looks second rate. If you get this, it looks like you bought an imitation Yeti one. Which I would not mind because I am interested in performance and not the looks. But, since the performance was so bad, I ended up with a cheap looking poorly performing product. My daughter has an allergy and we often take much of her food with us to be safe. For something like this, we thought a soft sided cooler would allow us to take enough for a road trip. Fill up with Ice when we got to the hotel and we would be all set. We were sadly mistaken. When we got home, I purchased a similar sized Yeti as a replacement and on numerous trips it has worked out great. It looks better and most importantly, it works much better. All the food stays froze or very cold during the entire trip. So, I tried to save a few dollars on this and my conclusion, it is not worth it. Either go cheap and get a normal soft side or spend the money for the real deal. These RTICs are priced in the middle but perform like the bottom.

The build quality is fantastic and rugged. The zipper is air tight (but a little stiff to pull). And the front/back pouches are a nice addition as well as all the exterior plastic rings for lashing it down. It probably keeps ice for five days if it's 80-90% ice and the rest drinks or food or whatever. I took this on a weekend trip and here is my experience. Friday afternoon I filled this with about half ice and half cold beer, drove three hours with the AC on then unloaded the cooler into an air conditioned cabin, where it stayed. And over the next few days of beer being pulled out every hour or two we were very impressed. Our drinks were ice cold the whole time and on Sunday night it was mostly water with beers floating around and a few large chunks of ice. I feel like the beer would have been fine until Monday, and maybe even Tuesday. Bottom line: This is a damn fine cooler and a way better option than others of the same quality and higher price. When I see a Yeti sticker on the back of a truck I now see the word "Sucker" instead. Rtic is the better option because of the price. Don't become a victim of marketing and image (full disclosure I do own a Yeti, but don't rock their swag).
