The media could not be loaded. While I enjoy the wooden kits that these companies put out, there's only so much you can do with laser cut wood. It looks great for certain applications, but for precise things, you'll never be able to get close to the effect that molded plastic has going for it. That said, this thing is basically like a plastic model kit. You take the pieces off of sprues, assemble them, and then move on to the next bit. The instructions are incredibly easy to follow, and practically every piece is labeled clearly, corresponding to the booklet. The electronics are also numbered, with color-coded cords, so mounting those are a snap, too. The only real issue I had, which other seemed to have, too, was with the lift kit. There is an automatic marble lifter included, which, as the name suggests, lifts the marbles in a perpetual loop, so long as the machine is turned on. You have to get the gears to sit in exactly the right way to assemble the lifts themselves, so they'll work in conjunction with the steppers, otherwise they get stuck and the machine shuts down right away. It wasn't a huge deal for me, I initially put the lower lift in wrong, and just had to reseat it, once. But, I can see how it would be frustrating if you couldn't identify what was going wrong with the process, especially after spending 4+ hours building the thing. All in all, I give it 5 stars. I'm certainly not going to impugn an awesome, fulfilling product over a minor technical snafu that was basically due to my fumble fingers. Watch the video!

Not very complicated, clear instructions, beautiful lighting, powerful lifting motor, and an amazing result! Yes, going to have to figure the four kits together next…..

It was a lot of fun to build but one of the main piece looks like it was in the mold for too long. Is there a way to replace just this one piece?

The media could not be loaded. I assembled the basic play set without any extra extensions in approx 5.5 hours. This was the fastest I was able to put together a kit due to the ease with which I was able to break pieces out of their templates and the extremely thorough instructions. The set instructs to test all the lighting from the kit first, which was super useful in making sure everything works before diving into the assembly. I like this step since I haven’t seen this step in other sets, even other kits that involve lighting. Again, the instructions are thorough and well crafted, with details visibly highlighted in red or noted with annotations to help prevent issues, whether with the marbles, wiring, or later construction. They also guide and help prevent the user from assembling something the wrong way. Other than minor troubleshooting/adjustments at the end to help everything run smoothly, I surprisingly never made a mistake where I needed to backtrack, thanks to the super clear instructions. Tips are reiterated and clearly aligned with the parts they’re referencing to avoid having to make guesses, while also reminding the user to take extra care in whatever way necessary for each step. The main structure is packaged separately from the lift, which I actually really liked as well. These kits all tend to have the same aspect of needing to sort through a bunch of different pieces, so it was nice I didn’t have to worry about differentiating the lift from the main module as well. The cable that comes with the set should be significantly longer, at least the one used for connecting to a power supply. Thankfully, it is just a USB-C port, and you can substitute it with a longer one or use a USB extension cable when setting it up once finished. It needs quite a bit of power to consistently push the marbles up to the top, so utilizing a battery or other weaker power source than AC typically causes it to stop running after a very brief period. The built-in cable management is outstanding. The steps set everything up so neatly, and consistently took the electronic parts into consideration during assembly rather than having the builder guess where and how you should lay them. This results in no awkward bundles of wire inside. As far as craftsmanship, the front door bulges a little on the latch side. There seems to be no actual way for me to fix this aside from probably sanding one end so it no longer has so much tension pushing inward from the top and bottom. The instructions come with steps for the advanced play and how to add in the extension modules. Thankfully, these steps are colored yellow, so it doesn’t lead to too much confusion when skipping past them. The only time it did confuse me was when following the final steps of the lift which are highlighted as part of “advanced play”, but are also used for the single lift in basic play.

I wanted to build this before I reviewed it, but with the holidays coming up and vine review cutoff date looming I felt compelled to leave a review without assembly. All the parts appear to be present (no pieces missing) and to be of good quality. The instructions are clear enough, so I don't anticipate any issues with the build. I can't yet comment on functionality or overall result though.

This is a great kit and it is very straightforward to assemble. However, it does go together like any plastic model, so some model-making skills are helpful. An xacto knife or saw would be handy. If you've ever appreciated large marble run units, this is one that does all the work for you, but is still wonderful to observe when it is complete. It is USB powered - RoWood's ROKR 3d puzzle bookshelf-style marble run is a great value at $64.99 and it is really fun to watch! This is a great present for a teen or teen and parent to work on together. Maybe avoid giving it to anyone that doesn't like models or Ikea furniture. Recommend. This is fun.
