So this was one of our son's Christmas toys that we bought him this year, and this is a toy I bought with super high hopes, because I'm planning on using this to teach letter recognition skills to our son, who has across the board developmental delays. There is no way in anywhere he's going to sit through anything that looks like traditional alphabet instruction, but he does like puzzles, and I firmly believe if he can master PECS and his speech device, he can eventually be taught to read, no matter what anybody else tells me. I am certain of it, and this is stage one of my battle plan for that. So in regards to our set, there were no manufacturing defects, all pieces are cut correctly and the pictures match, so that would appear to be an issue the manufacturer has addressed. I had hoped/figured they would have, so I took the risk of ordering it, because I knew this would be a toy I could get him to use and backdoor teach letters with. And he has started playing with me with it, so I am one super happy mama at this point. I really, really like that these are made of wood. I really also like that the letters are outlined in the cutouts, so that he can see the letter shape clearly when the piece is removed, it is part of why this toy is going to do what I need it to. If I had any sort of wish list for this, it would be a few more letters, so that I could have more pieces up with the letter pieces in them at one time. I also think a case of some kind that fits this product specifically would be awesome, I would have even been willing to pay extra for a product that came in one, but that's me personally, and I don't think it's necessary to the function of the toy, so I'm not taking a star from it. I think this is a great toy for reinforcing letter recognition and word formation using letters, and ours seems to be well made, I've examined all of the pieces, and I don't see anything that looks like it's going to be a problem. ... show more

For Christmas we decided to gift our children things that are educational being that we are a Homeschooling Family, & enjoy learning even through play. We have definitely gotten our money's worth out of this set even though we've only gotten to use it once so far. Reason being, our newly 3 year old & newly 6 year old enjoyed it so much, that it'll be something we can do together often. Not only that, being that it is very well made, I'll be saving it for our 10 month old to use once he's older. The only thing I was the creators of Melissa & Doug would consider is adding lids to their toys. We have 5 or 6 of different sets from them, & that part is quite inconvenient for storing & keeping the pieces from getting lost. Also, it would have been really nice if they would have added at least two more blocks with words, we went through them all pretty quickly. Regardless I really like that the toys are wooden, sturdy, & always geared to learn through play. Our Family definitely recommends! ... show more

My oldest son loves puzzles and letters! The Melissa & Doug See & Spell offers him the joy of both, along with the feeling of accomplishment when he spells a word. This educational toy promotes letter recognition, beginning spelling, letter sounds (when he isn't sure what the letter is I help him sound out the letter), builds self-confidence, and is just plain fun! Each of the words is three or four letters long and is accompanied by a colorful and easy-to-recognize picture to aid with word recognition. There are 8 wooden cards, each with a word on the front and another on the back, for a total of 18 words (my son loves turning over the card to see what the word on the other side is). There are over 50 wooden letters in different vivid colors to make individual letters easier to find. There are multiples of many of the letters, enabling the child to spell words on several cards without having to take letters off of other cards. We have had the set for almost four months and it has held up very well and continues to be a favorite. My only complaint is that there is no cover, which means we have to put the set up to ensure we don't lose any pieces. Other than that, my son really enjoys playing with it, and I enjoy seeing his face light up with pride when he spells words all on his own. I would really recommend this toy, especially for preschoolers and early elementary - manufacturer suggested age is 4-7, but my 2-1/2 year old loves it. For perspective- LETRS trained teacher and mom of 2. This review probably wont apply to you unless you are an educator or homeschooler. It also did arrive slightly broken but is still useable. Our 2yo has been working on letter sounds and loves puzzles so I thought this would be perfect for him. He loves it and has picked up on several consonant sounds as well as short vowel sounds. However, I should have done my due diligence when purchasing because there are several higher-order phonics skills in this set. I wish there were more cvc words and beginning consonant digraph with short vowels. There is only one cvce word and then several vowel team/vowel digraphs/bossy r. My 2yo loves to trace the grooves for the letters before he places them in the puzzle which is a great way to practice letter formation and offers some tactile learning. If Melissa and doug sold this exact activity by phonics skill, I'd be broke. Hopefully they decide to do so in the future! ... show more

The name Melissa and Doug immediately gives the impression that the toy is educational, made to last and safe/fun for kids to play with anytime. A couple of years ago we had been given a puzzle for a gift and we were missing one piece for the puzzle, so I called the customer service to help us out with replacing the puzzle piece. I was immediately impressed with the fact Melissa and Doug company did not have an automated message for you to chose options from for customer service support. I waited no longer than 5 minutes to speak to a representative about getting the puzzle replace if possible, and we had it mailed to our home in less than 6 weeks. After having spoken with customer service in regards to replacing the puzzle, I am convinced that this is a great company and they make so many amazing products that has something for every household, age group and safe for kids to play with always. My son had this product in his pre-k class last year. I have been thinking about buying this for us to have in our home and he was interested in this product right away. This product is perfect for my 5 year old to learn how to spell words, identify letters, and to build his sight word vocabulary at the same time. My hope is that it will help the 2 year old to strengthen his fine motor skills while he is starting to learn about the letters on each of the boards in this product. I have high hopes that this product will help my 2 year old that has some developmental delays, to start his interest in letters, words and identifying pictures while he is building his spoken vocabulary. ... show more
