Use in combination with a digging bar

I'm upgrading my rating:). I have a number of 30 year old cypress bushes that I removed yesterday. I started on root removal yesterday. The Root Assassin actually works well, BUT in combination with other tools that syou should have, including a pick and a digging bar (described later). The root assassin is sharp and has a 2 inch flat tip that works well for going under roots and helping to wedge them out. If you have a deep embedded root and can clear enough dirt then use a small chain saw or the digging bar with a point to pierce the root. ... I'm in the process of digging up my front yard and planting at least 50 bushes and trees. This sharp-pointed shovel really does not work for any root thicker than perhaps 1/16th of an inch, and really is not the solution for true root-impacted dirt. Instead, 2 weeks ago, I hired actual pro gardeners who dug holes in root-infested dirt to plant large trees. They used something I had never seen before and it worked so well I ordered it recently from Amazon, though I have not yet had an opportunity to try it myself...the Bon Tool RiverWorks 27-198 72-Inch Pencil Point San Angelo Digging Bar. I recommend the longer bar because it is heavier and creates more force. The guys would take this object, that looks like a spear and drive it into the dirt. Because it is so narrow, it easily breaks up the dirt and is used in conjunction with a pick ax. The bar widens the hole as well and the crowbar end easily breaks up and tears thick roots because of the leveraging effect since the bar is so long. This is a heavy steel shaft that drives down into the dirt with a sharp point on one end and a crow bar end on the other end (go to the product as listed here in amazon for an actual picture of the bar. The teeth on the side are razor sharp and the tip of shovel is even sharpened too...!!! I'm usually hard on tools and when I saw the length of the shovel head on this, I thought oh man. I'm going to bend this and destroy it as soon as I use it. Much to my surprise...!! I can bury the head half way or so and pry back on it pretty good and it hasn't bent yet. Great tool.... strong....!! 20JUN17: I broke my Root Assassin, but IT WAS MY FAULT !! I purchased another immediately. I was getting irritated because I was trying to dig a small oak tree out in soil that had a lot rocks in it and I tried to use the Root Assassin as a pry bar. You cannot do this !! lol.... All you have to do is use simple logic while looking at the shovel. It has a long narrow head on it. You obviously cannot stick this into the ground and try to use it as a pry bar. This shovels purpose is to function like a scalpel to make exact cuts around something, slicing roots as it is being inserted into the ground. I use this to remove small saplings, then plant them somewhere else. I use the Root Assassin to cut around the sapling so I can get a nice root ball. I have a regular shovel on hand also to do the prying part if needed. You will break this shovel if you try to pry with it. You can however, plunge it into the ground and then move it left and right as hard as you want. You just have to make a series of "plunges" around whatever you are trying to cut out. I'll say this again... you cannot pry with this shovel. There probably is no shovel on earth that has a long skinny head that will survive being used as a pry bar. ... show more

Root reaper beast

This thing is a beast! I had a very long stretch of palms with heavy root system and I needed to dig some holes for a fence Fighting for several hours with a standard shovel yealdee a very shallow hole and lots of ripped roots. I ordered this serrated shovel and was able to dig a hole in minutes. This shovel rip through the roots and you feel it under your foot as it penetrates the ground and break through the root system. It took less than 4 hours to dig up all the holes I needed for the fence. I would have given it 5 stars, but like others mentioned, when it's deep in the ground and you try to remove the dirt with it this deep, you can feel the handle starting to bend, so it's not as solid as I would have liked it to be. I combined this with an auger bit for the power drill and it worked like magic. It was easy to use, great value for the price (more expensive than in the store), the handle feels sturdy in the hand and long enough to get you started. Since it's tubed and not solid, it is very lightweight and easy to maneuver and move around. Great purchase overall. Work smart, not hard! ... show more

Works great for a variety of things

I'm 5'6" and the handle on this product hits me right at my waste which is perfect for getting power into the dirt and roots. *We have had a lot of rain, so soil is soft* But the teeth on each side along with the head was impressive When I first broke dirt with this I wasn't expecting the response. It TORE right through the dirt and demolished smaller roots around the root I was going after. The bigger root was over 1" thick and is an actual vine that are a bit harder to get a bite on. I was able to easily get it pulled out in a matter of minutes. I'm really impressed at the way this thing just tore through the dirt, rock and made it easy to lift the entirely of the root/vine in one go. I was then able to just lob off what was pulled up with some pruners. Highly recommend this line. They have SEVERAL different sizes and types to choose from, so make sure to check them out. ... show more
