Earlier this spring I built a gate from pressure treated 2x6's and cedar planks. The gate needed to span 13 feet across my driveway. I built two 6.5' frames with compression bracing at 45* and lap joints at each corner and for the compression brace. Glued everything together with Titebond III and secured everything with heavy duty deck screws. Even with cabinetry style construction of the gate still started to sag, that's the nature of wood and making a wide gate. I added these casters to keep the gate from dragging on the driveway. They installed quickly and I installed them "pre-loaded" about half the travel so the gate always has upward pressure on it. They removed the small amount of sag that had already set in and I hope will keep the gate from sagging any further. I can always add a tension cable if they continue to sag. ... show more

The wheels roll sufficiently well on grass and would be excellent on concrete or asphalt. The gate must be very sturdy; if not, you may need to place a wheel on each side of the gate. The spring support allows easier travel across uneven surfaces.

I added these casters to the gates on my privacy fence. Both open on slanted ground one is on a 10 degree pitch and the other is 5 degrees. These prevent the gate bottoms from dragging and make opening and closing smooth and easy. I was the only person in our household that could open the gate that was installed on the 10 degree pitch, but now my wife and kids can open both gates effortlessly. The wheel lock creates enough friction to lock the gate open in moderate winds, which is a nice feature. The wheels are sturdy enough for the aapplication,but I think they are the the least sturdy part of the caster. I used a corrosion inhibitor grease on the bolts screws and nuts to prevent rust and to make removal effortless. If this is your application I would recommend these casters. Add a lock washer to the nut whenever you install, and you can add a fender washer to the center screw to increase surface area. Those are the two things that should come with these parts, but I had some to add. ... show more

First, no installation instructions were provided. Second, product pictures show the bolt going from the caster into and through the gate, then finally screwing the nut. I had injury concerns with that if somebody walks by and hits their toe or leg or head against the bolt that is sticking out of the gate. As you can see in the photos, I reversed it: having the nut face the caster instead. Now, don't make the mistake I did: I bolted the caster too high up when I did not account for the compression of the spring. I had to move the three holes down a notch in order for the heavy gate to be up high enough. If I had to do this again, I would have lowered the caster by 2 bolt holes to get generous enough of a clearance off the ground. Lesson learned. Also, predrill the holes before you screw the bolt through, or you will risk cracking the wood like I did (I was too lazy with 2 holes). Opening/closing the gate is quite smooth now. ... show more
