The #250 capacity rating must refer to the bracket. The spring travels with <100 lbs or so. More than that and it bottoms out, no travel left.

Excellent gate support wheel. My gate now lifts into perfect latch position without me having to pull it upwards. Most gates will sag eventually and this wheel solves the problem once and for all. The bracket is very heavy duty and the provided bolts are long enough to pass through a 4 by 4. The (5 inch) wheel swivels easily on the caster bearing but you must provide a firm surface for it to roll on. In the dirt, it tends to dig in and stop sideways when it changes direction. I solved that problem by placing staggered ceramic tiles as a 'track' for the tire to roll on. Now my gate opens and closes as smooth as silk. This is the 250-Pound rated caster because you can never have too much capacity. The spring will only use what it needs, according to how high you mount it above the ground or floor. I mounted mine with a C-clamp to test the gate lift until I got it 'just right', which - for me - is at the center of the caster up-down range. Then I mounted the 'carrier' 2-by-4 to the gate with several 3-inch long screws.

This roller worked well for a few months. Then the Piston/Rod (or springs?) gave out which dropped the wooden gate to the ground level. I then had to lift up hard on the handle and drag to roll every foot or so until I could move the gate. So, it appears the up to 250 lbs capacity is not accurate. Otherwise it looks very sturdy. But ultimately all that matters is that it works and stands up over time.

This item is not fitted for 200lb. steel fence. The wheel had trouble turning around going back in opposite direction. Also the frame did not hold it's well. This item should be rated for 75-100 lb. fence.

Has a very sleek appearance and really like that the wheel can be locked in place especially because it comes to rest on a slight slope. It is attached to a cattle gate and works well. Attaching it was a breeze and took less than 10 minutes.
