Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER One of Hollywood’s most accomplished, feared—and funny—dealmakers has some stuff he wants to get off his chest. A lifetime worth of stuff. And secrets. And stories. And it all makes for one hell of a ride, and one of the must-read books of the year. “A no-BS look at what it takes to make it in business and in entertainment from a man who knows how to do it better than anyone else.” —Paul "Triple H” Levesque (14-Time World Champion, WWE Chief Content Officer) “An unvarnished look at [Ari Emanuel’s] rapacious career. . . . This may be the world’s first mad-moir.” —The New York Times Ari Emanuel has long been one of the most influential people in the world, but he’s also something of a mystery. Part of the reason is Emanuel’s job description. As Hollywood’s best-known super-agent—the inspiration for Ari Gold in the classic TV drama Entourage—he’s paid to speak for his A-list clients, not himself. Now, for the first time, the agent, the mogul, the ferocious power broker, speaks for himself, about himself, and about the game of life—often at the top of his lungs. In Roll the Calls, his take-no- prisoners memoir, Emanuel tells the incredible stories behind the signings and firings, the triumphant mergers and nasty breakups, the hard-won victories and crushing mistakes. With great comic zest, and in precise cinematic detail, he traces the arc of a classic rags-to-riches career, from suffering through severe dyslexia, to clerking in the mailroom of CAA, to striking out on his own with three fellow agents, launching a new talent agency that would go on to represent some of the most glittering names in show business, including Larry David, Quentin Tarantino, Denzel Washington, Billie Eilish, Martin Scorsese, and Oprah Winfrey. Along the way Emanuel was also raising four kids, fighting and reconciling with friends and colleagues, coping with a failing marriage, and struggling to find love again. Shattering the mold of stodgy CEO memoirs, Roll the Calls is told in a punchy, telegraphic style, with disarming humility and ribald candor. It’s a fable about success and failure, about creativity and persistence, and a master class in how to ignore the haters, how to overcome withering self-doubt, and, at moments of profound crisis and despair, how to be a fearless advocate for your most vulnerable client: yourself. Behind the Calls: Ari Emanuel’s Fascinating, Funny, and Unfiltered Memoir
Format: Audiobook
I came to Ari Emanuel’s Roll the Calls with unusually high expectations. The book had been recommended by Elon Musk, and whenever someone whose thinking I respect points me toward a book, I pay attention. After finishing Emanuel’s memoir, I can say that the recommendation was worthwhile. Emanuel tells a very good story, but what makes this memoir particularly effective is the way he tells it. He does not present his career as a carefully polished succession of victories. Instead, he takes the reader behind the scenes of an extraordinarily competitive industry and openly discusses his mistakes, misjudgments, setbacks, confrontations, risks, and victories. That candor gives the book much of its strength. Some of the most fascinating sections involve the people Emanuel encountered throughout his career. Famous names appear regularly, including Harvey Weinstein, along with many others whose careers and histories readers can easily explore for themselves. Yet the book never struck me simply as name-dropping. Emanuel uses these individuals as part of the larger story of how he experienced Hollywood and the entertainment business from his own very particular vantage point. I especially enjoyed his use of humor and analogy. Emanuel has a gift for taking an uncomfortable, chaotic, or even frightening situation and finding the absurdity within it. His account of his accident is a good example. He can be self-deprecating without making himself appear insignificant, and he frequently turns experiences that could have been told with great solemnity into memorable stories instead. I also initially enjoyed the profanity. Used selectively, a well-placed curse word can give a memoir authenticity, emphasis, and comic timing. In the earlier portions of the book, I thought Emanuel often used it extremely effectively. By the time I reached the end, however, I felt he had relied on it too heavily. When almost every emotional high point is reinforced in the same manner, the language begins to lose the very impact that made it effective in the first place. What began as punctuation occasionally became background noise. That criticism did not diminish my overall enjoyment of the book. Emanuel has lived through an enormous number of interesting situations, and he appears quite willing to tell the reader when things went right as well as when they went spectacularly wrong. Those failures are every bit as interesting as the successes because they help explain the instincts, aggressiveness, persistence, and judgment that ultimately shaped his career. As someone who reads a great deal of nonfiction and who is also writing a memoir of my own, I found myself studying the mechanics of Emanuel’s storytelling while I was reading. His use of comparisons, humor, self-deprecation, short anecdotes, recognizable personalities, and occasional irreverence demonstrates how personal history can be made considerably more entertaining without sacrificing substance. Roll the Calls is not a restrained memoir, nor does it attempt to be one. It is energetic, sometimes abrasive, frequently funny, candid about failure, and filled with stories from a world most readers will never experience firsthand. Emanuel gives the reader something more valuable than a sanitized career retrospective: his version of what it actually felt like to be there. For me, that made it a fascinating read. ... show more

Fascinating look at a Hollywood power player
Format: Kindle
Ari is a very smart and intense person. He built a huge entertainment empire. He talks about his successes and his mistakes. He talks about the cost that his obsessive drive has on relationships and looks to discover why he is the way he is. Very interesting!

Surprisingly (very !) Good
Format: Kindle
I guess that's the kind of book a dyslexic would write--short paragraphs, not real chapters--but enough to get his point across. Kind of a perk in many ways but an honest, straightforward, well-intentioned kind of a jerk with a lot to respect if not admire. Of course, he's the one painting the picture of himself. He identifies the people who would paint a different picture. Good book and worth the read. ... show more

The effects of ADHD and Dyslexia and parenting
Format: Hardcover
Ari Emanuel has had a rage that probably started with the parenting appears to lack the tenderness and thoughtfulness needed with a child that has Dyslexia and ADHD. His style of writing is totally different, it has a quality of panic, movement, drive, on the edge explosion- it turns out that is the style of his whole adult life. I read the book as a page turner waiting for the moment he would find a balance, a calmness and value something more lasting that winning in the moment and making more money. The details of Emanuel's career is an inside look at the business dealmaking of Hollywood and it appears there is a Jewish Maifa of deal makers running the community. Loyality is based on dealmaking, moneymaking and mostly hollow values. The most interesting paragraph is on page 341 quote of Dr. Calm talks about change........."Back in the 60's , Dr. Calm says a successful business mean was perceived to be a de facto smart guy. No more, A lot of dumbasses have amassed fortunes and so the secret is out. Success doesn't carry the cachet it once did. People no longer idolize businessmen." I actually found the book interesting in the beginning but by the end of the book I had a feeling of sadness. ... show more

Wow. I didn’t expect to love this one so much. I couldn’t put it down.
Format: Kindle
Well, I’m going back to passages. I highlighted to reread them to use them at the future time. The realness of the situations and how Ari doesn’t leave out the human doubt in the feeling that you don’t quite know what’s happening is really what made this book so great. Before I even finished the book, I had already recommended it to over 10 people. And now I’m buying a few books for friends to read it. ... show more
