Bought TD-8 new approx 2000, TD-15 approx 2010, modded it a lot until recently. Wanted better hi-hat and snare response and capacity for more cymbals. Kept looking at the cost of upgrading to the new VH-14D which was too high with both a new module and the VH-14, it was a conservative 3k which was silly, based on hope that it would be justifiable. After much consideration I chose to upgrade after 16 years to the TD516 kit, a confirmed solid choice after a week or two having it in my garage. Overall a huge upgrade, I found my preferred kit immediately, copied it over to the first user slot, have made a few tweaks, added a splash using parts I already had. Have probably spent 45 hours in the drivers seat so far, more impressed the more I dial it in, only editing in the same way I always have prior, have not explored the advanced parameters available via USB and the 3 digital sources (hi-hat, snare and ride), I have a feeling that will be rewarding. Those 3 sources are immediately discernible as substantial upgrades, the snare is a hidden gem waiting to be edited via USB, ghost notes are what I wanted and they are good, I expect that with tweaking they will be great, the ride is literally luxurious, a place I love to go and I saved the hi-hat for last, it's a major step up from the VH-11 I've been marginally happy with for a long time. I need more time in the seat to fully explore it's attributes, but a few weeks confirms Roland's commitment to top-tier instruments. Speaking of, the unpacking process is time-intensive, I spent a full day building it, which gave me the chance to unwrap every part, hold it in my hand and review it's characteristics from the eye of a very picky industrial designer, every part, every packing method was consistently high-quality, well designed and in practice has proven to do it's job, perfectly. I don't get that in trade for my dollar very often, Roland gets it right way more than most manufacturers, regardless of the industry. Highly recommended. I will likely update as time passes, I have a feeling it's going to be overwhelmingly good, very pleased with the value so far, it's very, very close to the nuance of an acoustic kit ... show more

Loving it so far. Tons of boxes to unpack but we had it set up in an hour or so and everything went together beautifully. Sound is great, after some setup refinements we love it! We read the description and knew there were a few necessities to purchase alongside the kit and were prepared.
