  • useful tool, have to work around holes.
not the quality of my moog but a useful tool. I bought it cuz of the three layers. I have many roland synths. All are used. At first the effects on the Gaia bothered me but I was able to tweek em to my liking. So my message, I find a good use for it, it's a creative tool. not a moog or DSI but as all Rolands they are dependable tools for creative espression. Not a first synth for beginner. I do like the sound, it's brighter than moog or DSI but Roland has always had it's own sound. For the price lots of possibilities. Not perfect, not true love but very useful and I use it as a creative voice. My advice, have a toolbox of sounds and use where it works. Update: I do love my Gaia! It's all in the layers. Sometimes I layer it with my Moog, nice contrast. For the money I'm very happy. It's great fun to play. I can play for hours creating. It would be great to spend a couple grand on DSI or a Viper but for $600 bucks you can get some really good sounding sounds. In the end I judge how often I use it and what sounds I get. doing some serious recording, Gaia came out muddy sounding. Had to turn off internal effects, not up to pro level, with pro outboard effects the problem cleared. As with all equipment one has to find the sweet spot and work around the holes. ... show more

  • Perfect Beginner Polyphonic Synth
This is a wonderful polyphonic synthesizer. Perfect for a beginner to start learning about subtractive synthesis. The layout is easy to understand. Lots of on board controls which is great for playing live (don't need a computer to play it for me, but it can if I want it to). I got it because I knew only playing one note (like on some monophonic synths) would be too boring for me. Great for making pad sounds, but it still makes nice leads and basses. The effects section is a huge plus as well. You can save some effects with customization and turn them all off and on with the press of one button. 37 keys may seem small for some pads, but it is very workable. 37 keys is also plenty for any mono sound you want to play on. The Perfect Beginner Polyphonic Synth. Get it. Play with it. Learn with it. ... show more

  • Hot Smaller Footprint Keyboard
This thing for under $1K is a huge bargain, it has tremendous potential and pretty easy to operate. Using for podcasting so it has twenty times the features I need, but why not, it is fun to play with. Yes there are more features you could add, but the price would go way up, so its perfect as is. Buy one before there are no more. ... show more

  • Not worth it
The GAIA is far too expensive for what you get. Sure it's got 1 for 1 controls which makes programming super fun but the most important part, the sound, is terrible. I mean this thing has NO soul whatsoever. Sounds completely thin and fake and that's because it is. It uses sampled waveforms. I sold it after a few months. I might pay $200 for it but even that is pushing it. This thing was a bummer. ... show more

  • Great Synth
I love this synth. Is was one of my first when getting back into synthesizers a couple of years ago. The price at the time was lower but it is what it is right now. If you want a great intro level synth with lots of editing options, great sound and easy to use features, this one is perfect. You can go wrong with the GAIA. ... show more

  • Excellent build quality
Purchased for my college-age daughter who is all about vintage clothes and music, the Roland GAIA SH-01 synth was not my first choice. Instead, I'd purchased the Roland JD-Xi which is newer and much more compact. It also provided more of a techno-vibe than the GAIA and a microphone for voice additions. I was sold on the newer one, but alas, I returned it because in talking with my daughter she was in love with the GAIA SH-01. The price difference had me looking at the Amazon Warehouse where I found a 'like new in the original box' SH-01. Upon arrival, I was a little concerned as the box was pretty beat up, but inside the SH-01 was as described with all the expected parts. My daughter loved the gift and kept commenting on how solidly constructed the instrument was and how fun to play. This is not the newest, most advanced synthesizer out there, but it is a quality instrument that musicians will appreciate and can grow with over time. ... show more

  • Roland in the deep
The media could not be loaded. Don't be mistaken by false or dumb reviews. This keyboard, and the brand Roland general; is superb and offers more then any regular piano synthesizer. I hope my pictures shows the elegance of this device and its ability to create resonance within your soul.

  • Great sound and usability
Pro: - Great sound with three different sound layers - Extremely intuitive controls - Full-size keys (see comments below) - Bonus GM bank (PCM) - Great price/performance ratio Cons: - Not multitimbral (but GM section is) - No aftertouch - Only 3 octaves - No vocoder - Can only access 8 GM instruments from the keyboard, and none of them is a piano (full set accessible via MIDI). This one has no excuse and should be fixed with a firmware update. ... show more
