  • Great hardware, software feels barebones.
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Band-in-a-Box Bundle
As somebody who's held onto all of his legacy hardware from previous versions of Rock Band, I feel that I can make a good comparison between the outstanding improvements over the first generation hardware (RB1) to today's RB4 hardware. The drums were the first thing that I set up. I noticed right away that the drums were much more solid in construction, and its components did not bend easily to some general force: a must for bouceback on drum heads. The rubber drum heads are quieter and more responsive, and they're velocity sensitive to boot! The metal enforced kick drum is a much needed improvement over the original all-plastic one (I've gone through 3 of them). I'm upset that Mad Catz did not have the cymbal expansion ready at launch. The microphone looks, feels, and sounds more like a professional stage microphone. The mic is also great to use on your PC! Just be cautious about dropping it as the capsule is a condenser, not a dynamic, so it can't take much abuse. The guitars frets are much improved. The click is now gone, and the travel feels smooth and consistent throughout the whole fret movement. The strumbar still doesn't click, though Harmonix and Mat Cat state that the reason why they use the induction based trigger is for reliability and longevity. It takes some getting used to as it feels inconsistent sometimes. The game itself is very barebones. It's absolutely a platform that needs to be expanded on with DLC songs and new features. Here's my take as an early adopter... if you want to support Harmonix right away, buy the band in the box. If you have a massive RB3 library and you still have all your (wireless) instruments in working condition, wait until the holidays or early 2016 for a few patches to go through; they're still working on DLC and game export entitlements and a lot of features that I used in RB3 are missing. ... show more

  • SO SO FUN!!
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Band-in-a-Box Bundle
This game is insanely addictive. I haven't had so much PURE FUN with a game in a LONG time. Playing FPS shooters or RPG got stale after awhile. This has been a huge refresher! My wife who is a NON-GAMER absolutely loves this and we've been playing it so frequently together. Was delivered to Australia in about 10 days in a very well packaged box. Pros: - Insanely fun and so easy to get into. - Quick setup got me up and running quickly. - HUGE DLC library and a great VARIETY of song genres, have already purchased SO many tracks! pop, rock, metal, classics, etc. - Setlist voting is very handy when choosing songs. - Having a variety of drums, guitar, and mic always keeps things fresh. I always switch instruments with my wife keeping the experience fun! - All the instruments seem very sturdy and well made. Drum pads are well padded which avoids disturbing our neighbors. - Freestyle guitar solos are SO FUN! Takes rocking out to a whole different level. Cons: - Some notes were not registered properly but hopefully this will be fixed with the firmware update. This however did not bother us enough, but could definitely be fixed. - Had issues updating the firmware via bluetooth pairing. Figured out you had to use "0000" (without quotes) as a pairing pass code to ensure the update goes through properly. - Could use with more character customization. - Lag on freestyle guitar solos and vocals. Note the normal notes on guitar and drum are totally fine. It's only the freestyle parts and vocals. Please fix asap! - Song store has a connection drop every now and then, and have to attempt access a few times before it goes through. This gets annoying when you are trying to browse 1,000's of songs before getting kicked out and having to start again. - DLC pricing is usd1.99/track for most songs, I wish they would bring down the price so I can buy more songs! As you can tell from the above, most of my gripes are technical aspects that I am hoping will be fixed with software updates ASAP. Other than that, this is one game I'll definitely be playing for a LOOONG TIME! Keep up the great work Harmonix and Mad Catz! I would purchase this again in a heartbeat. Do yourself a favor, and GET IT! ... show more

  • Still fun after all these years, still the same awesome Rock band formula
Platform For Display: PlayStation 4 Edition: Band-in-a-Box Bundle
I was a fan of the original Rock Band when it first came out on PS3, and the PS4 version brings back a lot of fun family memories with a refreshed but very familiar look. The new drum set has been overhauled completely from previous versions, with thicker, more sturdy drum pads and an easy to adjust stand. The guitars have that familiar Rock Band feel, with responsive fret buttons at the top and at the base of the neck, and the no-click strum lever feels more like you're playing a guitar string as opposed to pushing a clicky-lever that Guitar Hero has. This 4th version of the game has a new "freestyle mode" where you can (kind of) play whatever you want during the guitar solos, but it's not completely open - the screen cues will still tell you the strum-type, and it's up to you to try to match it with your own selected notes... so it's not entirely independent, but it's a different feature that you can use, or disable for the more conventional guitar solos. I do like how the drums and the guitars were completely wireless this time around, and I would have preferred the USB Microphone to be wireless as well - but I suspect that it's wired to deliver the constant stream of voice data without lag (as opposed to quick "blip" signals that the instruments send). Graphics-wise Rock Band keeps it simple, with animated characters that you can customize to your liking without trying to bring in too much realism. The song list on disc has a wide range of music, and the best part is that you can go to the PSN store and re-download all of your previous purchases from previous Rock Band games without having to rebuy them. This feature let me play songs from the previous versions and only expanded the song library even more. It's been years since the last Rock Band came out, and being able to play again on my PS4 is fun for the family and friends. Other than the semi-independent freestyle mode and a tour mode that feels a little short, Rock Band 4 still delivers and is still just as fun to rock out like the original. ... show more
