I pointed out the scent to my husband, who now refers to it as the "root beer powder". Both of us think the powder is effective at cutting down on odors, and my husband is happy to keep using it when he scoops the litter boxes. I will probably look for an unscented product instead, however.

As every cat owner can attest to, when you have cats - you spend your life catering to their health and happiness. This includes not only cleaning their litter boxes but trying to control the odor that emanates from them. About a year ago, I switched over to a Litter Robot from the traditional open box because I just couldn't keep the boxes clean and therefore the odor had taken over my home regardless of how much I cleaned. I was embarrassed to have guests over due to the smell. The Litter Robot was a godsend because now my cats had a clean place to do their business and the odor in the house was minimized greatly. The Litter Robot does a great job in helping to eliminate 90% of the odor in the house because waste isn't just sitting around waiting to be scooped - it is automatically deposited into a drawer below the machine to await when its time to empty the drawer. Because there is still waste sitting, there is still an odor that can be smelled (especially when you open the drawer to dump it or get close to the machine after the cat has just done its business). The Litter Robot does have a filter that helps - but again - where's there is waste - there is smell. You just can't change that. Or can you???!! I had been searching for litter order control products for some time and had given a few a try but none of them helped one bit. This product got rave reviews and I thought - what the hell. I ordered it and it came in and when I opened it up I finally understood the strong smell that other reviewers had mentioned. Someone described it as a cross between bubblegum and peppermint and I would have to agree with that assessment. The odor isn't unpleasant but it is strong. The first thing I did was toss a handful in the litter box and mixed it up and then waited. After about 2 days I was kind of disappointed. There was still an odor. And then I had a Face Palm moment and realized the waste was in the drawer and not where the litter was, so I opened up the drawer, sprinkled about 2 tsps in the drawer, closed it and waited. The next day when I got home from work and walked into the house, I was so surprised - no odor what so ever. Not even a hint which is what I expected. I walked over to the Litter Robot and again - no odor. I reserved my opinion until after I emptied the waste drawer. I placed a clean bag in the waste drawer and before closing it - I tossed in a small amount of this stuff (I didn't measure just put a little in my palm and then tossed in the bag) and then closed the drawer. I couldn't help myself and went ahead and tossed a little in the litter box as well. When I deposited the waste in the trash can in my garage, I decided to drop a little of this stuff in the trash can as well. My trash bin is only picked up once a week and I have to keep the bins in my garage. With 3 cats, I have to empty the waste drawer 2 to 3 times a week so the garage can get an odor as well (especially in the summer time). At this time, I am 4 days away from trash pickup. Next day, I come home, park in the garage and there is no odor (Yeah!). Walk in the house - no odor (Double Yeah!). Walk right up to the Litter Robot - no odor (Triple Yeah!). The real and best test is my ex-husband. Every time he comes over - he complains about the cat smell. He loved it when I got the Litter Robot because it did a wonderful job of controlling most of the smell but again - there was still a slight odor and he is so "sensitive" when it comes to smell that he still complained. He came over 2 days later and while my boys were getting ready we were in the kitchen talking and he wasn't saying anything about the cat odor. I finally just asked him if he smelled anything and he just looked at me with a shocking look and said no he didn't smell anything. He looked around and said I can't smell the cats - I forgot you had cats. He walked over to the Litter Robot and asked me what the hell I did because he couldn't smell anything. I showed him the product and told him how I was using it and then asked him to walk to the garage. He went to the garage and came back and said he couldn't smell the garage either. Told me I had a miracle product on my hands. THAT did it for me. I finally feel like I have conquered the battle of the smell. I don't have to use much, I just make sure that every time I change the bag in the drawer that I sprinkle some of this in the bag AND every time I change out the trash bag in the garage - I also sprinkle some of this in the bag and BOOM - No odor. The only time I really smell anything is when I open the drawer to empty it but even that isn't as bad as it used to be. I smell the odor but it isn't "IN YOUR FACE" bad like it used to be when you first open the drawer. I feel like I can confidently say this stuff works. I have already ordered another bottle to have in reserve so I will always have this stuff on hand. Since you don't use a lot, I would expect this to last a while but it would also depend on how many litter boxes you are maintaining. I only have one so I expect it to last a while. I will provide an update when I have finished my first bottle. For those of you who feel like you are fighting a losing battle with the litter box odor - get THIS - it WORKS! ... show more

    • Stinky but works well

This stuff smells like institutional bathroom air fresheners or maybe those blue cakes that they clipped into toilets. It works great to contain the litter smell though, really neutralized the ammonia odor. Once it was mixed in with the litter, I no longer smelled the 1980s school toilet scent

If you have a litter box, any type of automatic litter box. This is a must have. It truly is life changing. We have the Litter Robot 3 and we sprinkle some into the litter after each time we change out the bag. We also sprinkle some into the bag to help reduce the smell. It’s located in our laundry room and the smell would start to get into the clothes if we left them in the dryer for too long. This has completely eliminated that fear. Added this to our (2) cat breeze box and it did a pretty decent job. It cut the stench and helped to mask the odor over time. It doesn’t last as long as we would have hoped though.

I don't want to jinx it, but WOW THIS STUFF IS AMAZING. I have three cats and live in a small apartment. One of my cats poops human size turds, one pees gallons and the third has stink bombs. I have done a lot of research, tried many, many products. BUT THIS IS THE ONE! I sprinkler a layer on the bottom litter box when I am changing the litter, then sprinkle some on top. It smells like a shower fresh pine forest. Like my cats are pooping out Peppermint Pattys. Fresh, slightly minty and a cool breeze pine smell. There is no urine smell at all. And I think the scent re-activates when the cats step on it or move litter around. I highly recommend and will buy again and again. ... show more

I will admit I had serious doubts about this and truly ANY product claiming to tame litter box odors. I just moved into a small 2 bedroom apartment with my 2 cats and decided to give this product a try. I can’t say enough good things about this product! If you clean the litter box once a day and sprinkle this product in the litter and mix as directed you will be SO pleasantly surprised. This stuff works really well when in between full litter change overs. BUT, why oh why is it bubble gum scented?? I would much rather a clean linen, citrus, or even unscented. But hey, like I said it works.
