The Ring 2nd Gen is my first experience with a home install of a security system; however, not my first experience with security systems in general. If you're somewhat tech savvy you won't have a problem setting this up. The materials provided upon unboxing were sufficient enough to guide me to setting up and installing this security system without any prior experience. I am converting over from ADT due to their expensive monthly costs and I was extremely happy to find that the magnet side of the window and doors sensors (the smaller side of the sensor) worked with Ring. What this meant was I only had to replace part of my ADT system, thus making install easier and less time consuming. Software is easy to use. I was able to figure it out on my own without any instructions. Some people will complain that Ring doesn't have glass break sensors but coming over from ADT I will tell you that this is a blessing. The biggest false alarm you will get is from glass break sensors, especially if you have kids. I can't tell you how many times I had a false alarm go off because a kid banged their toys around, or screamed at the right tone, or threw a dish into the sink. I understand the need for glass break sensors in certain situations, like a bigger where you might not be able to hear a window break. If you want a glass break sensor there is nothing stopping you from putting a window/door sensor on the glass itself, positioned in a manner that doesn't interfere with the operation of the window. Stick the sensor on the bottom of the window frame and the contact magnet above it directly on the glass. If/when someone smashes the window and clears out the glass to climb thru, it's going to go off. I get that this is not practical for every scenario and every window, but it is an option. Alexa Guard is another option and while it isn't a true glass break sensor, it is a bit of a backup. I want to edit to add that I'm a little frustrated with Amazon on the package options and shipping. I bought the 14 piece kit, however, I did not need the 14 piece kit. I didn't need the 2nd keypad, motion sensor or range extender. All I needed was one the base station, one keypad, one motion sensor, the fire alarm listener and 8 contact sensors. Buying all that stuff separately cost more than the 14 piece kit so I was forced to order it. This is when I became aware that a true 14 piece kit doesn't exist. What Amazon did was ship me an 8 piece kit and then all the other pieces separate, like I wanted to order anyway. They all shipped at different times with the last pieces arriving 5 days after the initial kit. I wish they would have at least arrived at the same time so I could have installed my system all at once, however, doing it this way gave me the chance to see just how easy it is to add on additional devices at any time. The cellular backup is via AT&T. You'll want to check service at your address.

Hands-down love this system!!! I’m a 69 year old senior woman who’s pretty handy with house projects, and this was, by far, one of the simplest things I’ve done around the house. I’d had a local company system for over 20 years. Upgrades to cell service (i.e., 5g) was forcing system upgrades. My “discounted” price for all new required units with my local company was over $800! And monitoring going up to $35/mo. All of that was a non-starter! I’d had my Ring video doorbells since the first year they came out and have loved them. Great customer service, too. So I decided this was the time to switch out everything. I disconnected all components of my previous system and recycled, and bought this Ring Security system along with 2 extra keypads. I watched several YouTube videos on unboxing and installing, which was very helpful to have that awareness ahead of time. Installation is super easy. It’s connected to my Linksys Velop mesh system without problems. And the extra beauty is being able to manage it through my smartphone via the Ring app. The app prompts you through everything during installation. One awareness is that each component has a number on it that is on each component box and the item itself (for example, each contact sensor has its own unique 5-digit number that you’ll need to be aware of as you set them up.) Ring support also awesome. I highly recommend! Loving it. Also the real time monitoring is much cheaper and very professional. The keypad has 3 emergency buttons for police fire and help. Ring will manage the permit with your county on your behalf (if a permit is required by your county, which mine is) and it’s easy to download and send a certificate to your homeowner’s insurance company for getting any discounts. Highly recommend!

I have taken full advantage of the ring 2.0 security system. My home wiring box now glows with an Ominous red glow or a cheerful blue at night. Mounting the base station In This way meant I had to get multiple wireless repeaters. My base station was on the 2nd floor and I had sensors on the first floor entirely. I was still able to push this unit to max operating ranges and I was also able to take advantage of having the base station chirp upstairs “audible to occupants on the 2nd floor” and the keypad chirps near garage door on first floor. This combined to make a very very cool tech savvy setup. When people visit my front door the big old echo show verbally announces there presence and the visitors can hear the announcement through the door like a PA Announcement (ring doorbell pro) the door lock and ring doorbell Integrate seamlessly into one unified place. This is what I’m after. Unified home Integration and automation with as few apps as possible. The ring app seems to serve general home security and operations well. Tips to deal with interference/weak sensor signal: if your trying the same way I did and mount ur base station in ur home wiring closet make sure to place the device up high and In the upper right or left corner of your wiring box so you can mount it with Velcro across the “top n side” that touches a wall. If you tuck it in too deep in the wiring closet it makes it harder for the ziggbee signal to get out. I even have this base station sitting next to Phillips hue smart bridge. I did have to change the ziggbee channel on the hue bridge. This also helped with interference. Take advantage of the base station having battery backup. When plugged in directly to the socket you will get push notifications when power is lost and restored. This is a really nice feature. My house came with linked smoke/co2 detectors. If one goes off the others do too. This meant I only needed one ring smoke detector co-listener. I placed a flood and freeze sensor behind my washer/dryer. One ring stickup cam with solar in the backyard. One stickup cam in the garage. One ring doorbell pro. Yes I will add a few more cams. :::update now at six cameras. You can adjust the cameras on ur dashboard to an OCD pleasing order.:::: Yes I went all the way on this setup but it was fun making it all work together. Now my house talks/chirps! And my Wiring closet looks like giant HAL 9000 AI! If your a tech person go with this and get exactly what you want!
