  • Immediately useful and inspiring even for tiny budgets
Format: Hardcover
This book is inspiring and focused on real things that real people can do, even on very limited budgets (including zero-budgets). The chapters break down design into basic steps and what to think about for each area of a home, whatever that home looks like, and taking it one tiny space at a time. Many of the sections include not just the design "rules" but also specifics about how and why they impact our mental health so we know WHY things work or don't work. Halfway through the book I re-organized a bathroom "junk" drawer, inspired by one of the chapters, and it really does make a difference in reducing my frustration when looking for things. This is an excellent book (and with beautiful pictures), and almost feels like Bobby is walking around my house with me, asking gentle questions about whether a space is working for me and what little things might nudge it toward working better. ... show more

  • Mindful home design. Deep, practical, doable, inspiring. Love it.
Format: Hardcover
I'm low-key obsessed with this book. I've always struggled with what it means to truly feel at home and this book has given me much insight on how to answer that question. Rather than encouraging me to "identify my personal style" (what does that even mean), it counsels turning within to find my particular felt-reactions to color, texture, light, and atmosphere. It encourages me to look at my home as a space that holds me with love and joy--and, for sure, practicality. Because there is joy in what works! This is the home design book I’ve been waiting for. Most impactful (to me), Right at Home points to the power the external environment has over our experience and suggests that confidence and ease don't always have to be sourced from within--they can actually be drawn from the environment. Also: great photos and lovable Bobby Berk. ... show more

  • It's his personality
Format: Hardcover
I am very pleased to report that all of the good vibes and warmth that come across from Bobby and the boys on Queer Eye has been captured here. Design is intimidating for a lot of us. He speaks to the reader in a very "you are perfect just as you are" style that puts one immediately at ease. He is democratizing the design process, he's giving us the power to create our own best plan, with all the encouragement that anyone could ask for. The book is like a hug. From someone with really good taste. And visually it is a feast for the eyes. Well done, Bobby! I love you. ... show more

  • Practical and exciting ideas
Format: Hardcover
Usually when i read interior design books like this, i spend a lot of time rolling my eyes at how out of touch the designers are (one example was a designer who had created a "kids' room" that looked like a hotel suite with a single stuffed animal sitting on a chair). One thing I love about Bobby's style, though, is that it's creative and modern while still being realistically implementable and practical. I especially like his tips on how to incorporate things you like from other aspects of your life into your rooms and his ideas for how to organize in ways that will actually make your life easier instead of trapping you in an arbitrary set up that will just take up an unnecessary amount of your time. His kitchens are especially great! ... show more

  • A Workbook for Creating Your Best Home
Format: Hardcover
I've never seen "Queer Eye," so the author's name meant nothing to me, but I can't resist a good home decor book. And, this one is pretty good: more of a workbook than just pictures of rooms you want to live in. Berk provides insightful questions to consider before tackling a decorating project, and ideas that should help you discover what you're truly looking for when creating a room that's uniquely you. There's nothing particularly innovative or mind-blowing here, but it's a nice book for browsing and dreaming. ... show more

  • Informative and friendly style
Format: Hardcover
I like the questions and thought points this book brings up with designing. He also instills confidence in the reader, which feels genuine. A helpful book for someone just starting out with their own place, or looking to solidify their style.
