Standup paddle boarding had been such great fun while socially distancing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic last year. It also helped us bond with our children, and not long after, many friends joined in with boards of their own. In this review, I took a look at the RideToFly (Yellow) iSUP whose dimensions put it right up against the similarly-sized DvSport Sunshine and makes it more advanced than the popular Runwave Kohala. In other words, it should appeal to both beginners and those more experienced/transitioning to the intermediate level. WHY NOT RENT? The typical rental fee for a SUP in our area ran for $30/person for two hours. So, doing the math for an inflatable SUP at $300, that would equate to 10 rentals for up to 20 hours of use. It made sense for us to purchase one instead to save in the long run. What makes the RideToFly a great beginner/intermediate paddle board? Are epoxy (solid) SUPs more durable than inflatable ones? As it turned out, no. See the Pros and Cons for more details. PROS - Very lightweight: 18.5 lbs -- Light enough to be carried to remote wilderness locations - Pleasant, modern graphic design - Less expensive than hard boards - Fast to deploy/inflate -- First time, an iSUP took me 20 minutes reading instructions and looking for the parts -- Subsequent times took roughly 9-11 minutes to get paddle-ready -- Consider using an electric pump for faster deployment. See TIPS section for more - Compact and portable -- Folds away easily to the size of a sleeping bag --- Simply deflate, remove specific parts, protect the fins, and roll away -- Takes up less space than hard boards -- Can fit in a smaller car, is easier to carry around, and can be checked in on an airplane (and helps save on rental fees) - Carry handle at center of board for one-handed transport - More durable than hard boards as they won’t scratch or ding when dropped, making them a bit more suitable for rocky, wild adventures -- This did not initially make sense: why would an INFLATABLE be more durable than a HARD board? --- Hard boards are more prone to cracking, scratches, and appearance of holes that require immediate fixing. I am not a professional SUP rider and suggest you visit a paddle board shop for advice appropriate to you. - The wider a board, the more stability is added (useful for beginners or tandem riders) but harder to paddle -- 31" and wider are perfect for beginners and tandem riders -- 30" or narrower, due to less drag on the board, increase mobility and speed, suitable for surfing - The longer a board, like snowboards, the more streamlined it is to cover distance -- 12′ and longer are designed for racing -- 9′ – 11′ are great for recreation -- 9′ or less are intended for surfing due to more nimble mobility - The thicker a board, the heavier of a rider it could carry -- 5" or thicker are best -- 4" are perfect for children and light paddlers It is better to be too light than too heavy for a board - The higher volume of a board (measured in Liters), the more weight and height of a rider it can accommodate due to increased buoyancy, and be more stable -- Choose a board that is at or below the suggested weight limit --- Going above the weight capacity can introduce a sinking drag and be harder to paddle on --- Take into consideration ---- Overall weight, including any food, water, gear, and companions ---- Your skill level and age ---- Water environment and activity type -- Check out a SUP Volume Calculator (1 kg = 2.2 lbs) --- Not all boards with the same volume are the same. Their concavity and overall shape, among other factors, affect a board’s performance --- Beginners: Total weight x (1.1 to 1.4) ---- If you are 170 lbs and plan to bring a 50 lb child with 10 lbs of food and water, total weight is 230 lbs. Volume should be between 253L – 322L --- Intermediate or Advanced: Total weight x (0.9 to 1.1) -- 200L and up are generally great for recreation and beginners Keep in mind that after a few times of paddling, you may find yourself quickly advancing in your abilities. My personal recommendation with anything I do is to always get something that is at least a notch above my current skill level. CONCLUSION The RideToFly with its wide and shorter form factor makes for a very stable, beginner-friendly inflatable that is just advanced enough for the person looking to transition into intermediate level. Its approximate volume of 304L, 6" thickness, and 330 lb maximum weight-capacity could accommodate two adults, but be sure the board is fully inflated so a flex or sink would not hinder paddling efficiency. Like all the other iSUPs and hard SUPs I had used last year, paddling around in the water had provided a great amount of joy, memories, and much-needed exercise in a socially-distanced World amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. My son went from someone being fearful of water to wanting to go out with me every time, even agreeing to learn how to jump into the ocean and flipping himself to safely float with a life vest. My favorite had been the DvSport Sunshine iSUP for its streamlined performance, but this RideToFly is right up there with it. Purchasing an inflatable stand up paddle board was an eye opener and money saver over rental fees. It very much was more stable, VERY lightweight, and easier to stand on for longer periods of time than hard boards, but I also felt more pride taking care of something that was mine. Inflatables not only take up less garage space, but they are also more compact to transport in a car’s trunk. My best friend and I said to each other that we should have bought one long ago instead of wasting so much money on rentals, but in a way I am glad we waited: technology has improved and prices had gone down quite a bit. As someone who has spent a few years rigid paddle boarding off of Long Island I was looking for something I could bring with me more easily on road trips. At first I was a bit skeptical about how an inflatable would do compared to my rigid board, but after inflating it and setting it up, this thing seems super sturdy! I left it inflated for a few days to make sure it doesn’t leak any air. Pros: - Price!: This is almost Identical to my Friend’s $600 board, at less than half the price. - Portability: it comes with a carrying backpack, so I can take it from the beach to my car with ease and inflate it on the beach (unless I want to use an electric pump- see more on that below) - Size: this is a very long and sturdy SUP. Lots of volume means it will be stable and can accommodate larger riders. You can even ride with a second person- I plan to take my 5 year old son for a spin with me . - Weight: being an Inflatable, it’s actually even lighter than my regular SUPs of comparable size. This means it is even easier to carry using the carrying handle - Accessories: It comes with everything you need, and more! - It comes with an optional backrest that clips in to the D rings if you want to sit. Then, the paddle can be set up like a kayak with paddles on both ends, or as a single paddle with a handle on the other end. - It comes with waterproof storage to bring your belongings with you: a pouch for your phone and a waterproof bag for a towel or clothing. This can be attached and secured to the bungee section at the front of the board. Cons: - If you are just using the included hand pump it is a bit of a workout to inflate. (See my setup advice below) - Being an inflatable you should be careful about riding it all the way to the shore if the beach is rocky/has shells. I could imagine this would lead to a puncture or a leak. But to combat this the board does come with a patch kit. When thinking about this concern I did remember that a regular (non-inflatable) board could also get damaged this way, and would be much harder to repair. How I plan to use it/ Setup advice: Keep it deflated until arriving at the beach, so that I can store it in the trunk of my car. I no longer have to worry about using my roof rack. Once I get there ill use my electric pump from my car’s 12v outlet to inflate it most of the way. Once there’s enough air for it to take shape I’ll pressurize it using the hand-pump. I will start by inflating it to 12 PSI because the hot sun will cause the air in it to expand, and I don’t want to surpass the recommended 15 psi maximum. I hope my lengthy review was helpful! This paddleboard is ten times better than I expected. I have put off getting one for a long time and finally got this one. Once we got it out and blew it up, it was huge!! We were amazed at how firm it was blown up. It is very wide, so it should be easier to balance than thin ones. The inflated size is 10.6'x32"x6". The deck is not at all slippery. The paddleboard comes with everything you need to get started. The double-action hand pump is very effective. The only thing I don’t like about the pump is its height. It’s a back killer if I don’t get a chair to sit on. Once it’s blown up, it feels almost as hard as a regular board. My son and his girlfriend both got on and got the hang of it right off. Once you get the board blown up, at 19 lbs. it’s not too heavy to carry. The maximum weight for the board is 330 lbs. If you don’t want to stand up, it comes with a seat and another paddle so you can use it as a kayak. The paddles are innovative - they come in three parts - combine with the handle and use as a single paddle, making it long enough for standing or take the handle off and add the other paddle blade so you can have a double paddle. We felt that the paddles were very efficient. We had trouble keeping the pressure up – hopefully, it will be a case of just practice removing the hose. The big fin is hard to slide on, but, again, I think that will get easier with time and practice. The accessories that come with the board are two glasses straps, two waterproof pouches, one 10L waterproof storage bag, one durable backpack, one repair bucket, one wrench, and one removable fin. We have gotten everything in the backpack/bag except for the pump. I think we can figure out how to fit it in over time. While the backpack is heavy, it is surprisingly comfortable to wear. The user manual was very minimal, but there is a lot of information about blowup paddleboards on YouTube. This blowup paddleboard feels very sturdy and should hold up well. It should provide fun and exercise for the whole family for multiple seasons.

Love, love this board. 1st time SUP'er. It arrived quickly with nothing damaged. Did a lot of research through all price levels and settled on this one. It takes a bit to blow up with pump. The first psi takes an act of Congress to get there as well as the last 5 psi for me... I have no arm strength. I will highly advise to purchase a motorized pump to use on the first 2 psi's and then hand pump to the last few psi's. But once pumped, it's really light, very stable on water, easy to maneuver, feels like you are stand on a firm board. Deflation takes less than 5 mins. The kayak seat is not worth it, very flimsy, no support. But if you can sit on the ground without a back support, you don't need it. I don't have the balance to stand up but I sat and paddled for 3 hrs straight with no problems and I'm a plus size female. If I can do it, anyone can. Buy it. It well worth the dough compare to what it cost to rent 4 times and great workout for upper body.

This is a great board for a beginner and even an intermediate user. I’ve taken my kids out on this with me and it’s solid. Mac PSI Says 15, but it operates well on mild waves at 12-13. I would recommend an electric pump! The carrying case does. Not hold up though. On my second outing, it’s already ripped and has holes on the bottom and this wasn’t even handled roughly. They need to put more durable fabric in the carrying bag. The board is a 5 but the carrying case is flimsy and so is the kayak seat attachment- so that’s the only downgrade. If you are on the fence about buying a SUP but want a good board on a budget- this is it! I would recommend putting in some padding or heavy canvas at the base of your bag( inside)- or look for a better carrying case- it’s not worth the kayak seat attachment but I prefer to have the option to change my paddle so it’s worth it just for that option! Overall, super satisfied with this purchase.

I used this once so far and everything packed in the bag so nicely and the bag was much lighter than paddle-boards I’ve had in the past! All of the additional accessories came with 2 sets, like the phone sleeve, glasses band etc which was above and beyond. It was very easy to set-up and inflate, and put the fun on. With it being so much lighter I will be interested to see how the material holds up to pops, as it is thinner. It’s huge and can hold multiple people easily. I think the pounds it holds is also high enough for 2 people. I will be using this this summer!

The board is a bit curved, but it's serviceable. But don't paddle too hard. Otherwise the paddle will break right off. When the first broke off, I figured, well I can't use it as a kayak paddle but it still works as a paddle board paddle. Maybe it was just a defective paddle. But when the second one broke, it became clear that it was a choice to sell something that doesn't actually work. (I'm not particularly strong. Just a normal guy. But the paddle still broke clean off while I was paddling.)
