I don’t know how I missed the boat on this game when I first got my PS5, however, now in 2025 I decided to try this game after borrowing it from my local library. I liked the game so much that I went out and bought myself my own copy, even though I could’ve kept using the one from the library indefinitely. The first biome in this game was pretty difficult for me at first and I almost was going to give up on the game. I’m sure glad I didn’t because the game gets easier as you go along and becomes even more fun. It is still a very hard game to be sure, but it is extremely fun and addicting. I spent many late nights telling myself OK one more game over and over until several hours had passed and I finally had to get some sleep. The shooting in this game is extremely satisfying and no matter which weapon you choose to play with, they are all really fun. I don’t usually care much about the story and games as the gameplay is more important to me, however, this game has a pretty interesting story which never hurts. This is a game that I would have gladly paid 70 bucks for when it first came out had I known how much I was going to like it. Watching some YouTube videos on it doesn’t do it the justice it deserves. It doesn’t look all that great from just watching videos, but playing it is extremely fun and satisfying. on a sidenote, I guess this game is considered a roguelike, or roguelite game but up until playing this game, I had no idea what that even was. So it turns out this is the first game of this type I’ve ever played and I’ve been playing video games for well over 40 years starting with the Atari 2600.

It seems like many of the reviews of this game either didn't reach the first boss or didn't beat it. This game is just a downright masterpiece. The game does in fact have a type of checkpoint system in place, people telling you their runs are lasting over an hour, no offense, aren't playing the game right or are getting God Runs without realizing it. I haven't had a run go over 45 minutes unless I have beaten several bosses in a row, and that's on the long end of it. For example, your first mission is to find a key, that's it. Once you find that key you no longer have to find it on subsequent runs, it is automatically in your inventory. From that point you can go straight to the first boss of the game after about 10 mins or so on every run after you find the key. Once you beat the boss, you unlock the next area, and the same type of checkpoint system applies. Once you beat the first boss you do not have to beat it again on every run after the winning run, you can go back to fight the boss if you CHOOSE to, otherwise you can skip it and go immediately to area two. This pattern applies to the rest of the game as well. Yes, dying after a longer run can be frustrating, but you have to know that you are making progress, sometimes it's just hard to see. Now onto the actual review of the game. The sound design, visuals and gunplay feel spot on. Most important of all of these is the sound design, what enemies are in a given area, where they are in that area, the game gives all of that information to you through sound alone. The visuals... I mean, it's a game running at 4k 60fps, it's gonna look good. The enemy designs are all a work of art each in their own right, especially some of the bosses (No spoilers). Gunplay is quick and snappy with tons of depth to each weapon. Do I like all the weapons? No, but that's because of my personal playstyle, people will find the weapons they like and use them more than others. The name of the game is movement, enemies are relentless in their pursuit of your demise, so it's very important to move constantly and create space between you and your attackers. The further you go into the game the more abilities you unlock to avoid incoming projectiles. Speaking of projectiles... There is a TON of them coming at you. Housemarque is known for their Bullet storm games and this game is no exception. The longer you have to react to incoming attacks, the less likely you'll get hit. Overall, this game is absolutely fantastic, is it more of a niche title than say Uncharted or God of War? Yes, absolutely. But if you're willing to push past that first initial wall of the first area and reach the first checkpoint, you'll never want to put the game down.

I'm absolutely AWFUL at this game -- but I love it! That's an unusual combination of circumstances in my book, but then "Returnal" is an unusual game. You're an astronaut exploring a planet for a signal of some kind. The planet is populated by all manner of icky creatures shooting various patterns of harmful rays at you. You can't select a "forgiving" or "beginners" mode to help you along, so you will die and die again. You will need to reacquire all the stuff you collected. But what holds your interest even as you die and die is the way the planet changes every time you visit it. Rooms are presented in a new order, and I believe the placement of objects in the environments may be random as well. After apparently hearing too many complaints that the game was too hard, the developer Housemarque added a feature enabling you to save and resume a campaign -- though just one at a time. This still is a very welcome feature, though once you encounter a room that locks you in with a number of ray-shooting creatures coming at you from all directions at once -- you will have to be a much better player than me to last the duration!!! Did I mention that this game makes MAJOR use of the awesome DualSense controllers to handle your weapons? The 5.1 surround sound is very effective as well; if you have an A/V home theater setup, you will definitely HEAR danger before you see it, in many cases. Several things I wish I knew when I first started playing: 1) Run to the sites where you just blew up enemies to collect gold "obolite" money. 2) Shoot statues with red eyes. More of those gold obolites! 3) When you see a weapons chest lurking behind an iron trellis, look high above for a pyramid hanging horizontally from a wall, with a red light at its apex. Shoot that light to open the trellis and find a weapon you may prefer. All in all, lots of fun. Housemarque is definitely a developer on the A list! And if you haven't played their "Vox Machina" or "Resogun," you will certainly want to add these adrenaline-fueled shooters to your list! UPDATE: I've been playing this game for months now. I have made some progress -- not all that much! -- but this continues to be one of my favorite games, which I play almost every day. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Wow. The game is fun and beautiful. Amazing atmosphere . The sound is off the charts good . Its smooth as butter at launch , Housemarque has outdone themselves . It’s hard at first, well it’s hard throughout the game in spots but fun as !!!!! . Semi spoiler tips not story related below: As you progress (keep dying) you will see more of the story and it’s intriguing to me. You need to die a bit (not for everyone but for most) to collect permanent upgrades and get proficiency of your weapons . Move a lot , generally pick a direction if there’s a lot of enemies don’t go left and right (in general not always) you will run into bullets most of the time when there is a lot of enemies . Use the environment as shield .Find the weapon you like and use it a lot it will respawn for you once your proficiency is up. Find all the obolites you can and upgrade a lot , get the health stimulant , get the astro extra life . Once you get a 1-2 hours in you should be able to get to the first boss he has a tough attack but the bullets aren’t too bad . Beware of malignancy , see if the negative effect of the item doesn’t outweigh the positive effect for you , if it does just leave it . Pick the right consumables I usually keep health stimulant Lots of secrets . Look for yellow glowing lights , red lights etc.shoot them . You will get upgrades that let you in new areas closed at the beginning . this game doesn’t need a save file btw because there are things you keep each time you die but some with no patience or skills may not like the system but to me it’s fin amazing . Just keep going you will get it . It’s meant to be daunting in the beginning like many harder games but you start to become badass as you get upgrades . There are some hard biomes for sure and you will die and get frustrated but this is that type of game but it is super satisfying when you get to the next area and get that next upgrade , it is to me at least . Such a risky game for a small studio , this would have broke them if they failed they have never tried a big game like this . I really appreciate the love put in this game I can feel it .

The game is fun, graphics are beautiful, the story is there I guess is the best way I would describe it combat is really really smooth but I could see this not being for everyone. The main problem I have with it is having to restart completely with nothing I believe that they're fixing this in the newest game And you don't have to play this one ahead of time I believe so I would just hold off and get that instead if I'm being honest.

I knew I wanted this game the first time I saw a trailer for it. And that was it. I didn't want to ruin it by finding out too many details. The little I would stumble across though made something very clear however and that was that this game is apparently a love it or hate it experience. I'd even hear from friends who had played it that they thought it was a great game overall but they couldn't get into it. I kept this in mind as I waited for a deal price wise on it and then bought it. For me I'am very happy to say that this game is fantastic! It has a wonderfully spooky and gritty Sci fi setting combined with amazingly addictive game play. I won't go into the setting too much. I'll just say think an alien world with alien structures and brilliant alien designs. As for the gameplay it's fast and fluid with wonderful controls which are kept simple so that they become intuitive very fast and have you zooming around areas like a superhero. Some people don't like this game and it isn't for them and that's fine. There's plenty of games I've no interest in also. This game to me however is an absolute masterpiece and I definitely recommend it!

This is one of the hardest games for PS5, because every time you lose there is no way to save your progress, you wake up and start everything over again. However, every time you start over the world has changed like you just entered a different reality and the maps are totally different. I really dislike it, but also I really love it, the graphics are amazing, the aliens are cool, the bosses are hard and the story overall is very intriguing. This is a cyberpunk or futuristic game, the suites and the weapons are on another level. If you like puzzles you'll love this game but also hate it, because the game and puzzles aren't easy.

Returnal is a visually immersive, and engaging game that is part action, suspense and mystery. Although the game is a "slow burn" (the story line and game play building gradually) in my opinion, it does not disappoint. Returnal is not your typical shooter-based game where you simply shoot your way through each level. Rather Returnal is a mystery and suspense, sci-fi, strategy, action game with its storyline based on the character "Selene" stuck in a time loop after crash landing on Astropos. Think of it as a mash up of the movies Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise and Prometheus or Alien Covenant by Ridley Scott (Alien). Each time you die, you respawn or are resurrected to repeat the level. But each time you play, the environment and available weapons, consumables and artifacts are entirely different. After a few resurrections, you soon begin to realize the concept of the game and storyline. This makes the game feel fresh after each play and allows you to develop your gaming strategy and skills. As you improve your game play skills and make better choices in what you spend your resources on, weapons you chose, battles you engage in, the game rewards you with more pieces of the storyline being revealed along with more alien environments to explore, weapons, consumables, and artifacts to leverage. Returnal is stunning, impressive and immersive with its visuals and sound design. If you are fortunate to have a large screen OLED HDTV and surround sound system, you WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. Returnal is the first PS5 game I've started to play and I have yet to play any other game since. Its like a good book that you just can't put down, wanting to find out what happens next. I only wish there were more hours in the day to play. 😁
