Description
The RC66RX has more codes available than it's predecessors (RC65RX, RC65R and RC64R). It can do everything the Infrared(IR) can do, and more. It's Radio Frequency (RF) capable, so you don't have to point your remote at your receiver to control it. You change channels from other rooms. Older model receivers may require an antenna to use this remote in RF mode (look for remote antenna input on the back panel of the receiver). This remote will also work in IR mode if your receiver is not RF capable (must change remote to IR mode).

This is a real gem! After my Logitech Harmony 300 quit working (after less than 2 years some buttons stopped working including volume up) I was on the lookout for a replacement. I really liked how the Harmony remote had an online database and would "self-program" and prefer that, but I didn't want to spend money on something not built to last. (I criticize the Harmony 300 because I have several device specific remotes which have lasted 10+ years, and are still going strong). So I start by searching "cheapest remote" on Amazon and while reading some reviews I see this DirectTV remote recommended by a few people. Then I find out it has an online database with remote codes - I ordered immediately! Remote gets here a couple days later and my first impression is "dang this thing is built like a tank!" I will be fully surprised if this remote doesn't last 10 years like all my other (non-Logitech) remotes. It is very solid and the buttons feel great. If I were to guess, I'd say the remote cost more to build than they are selling for. Programming - this was both easy and difficult (see below) The easy part is the online database (on the DirectTV website). I was able to type in the brand of: home theater receiver, TV, and Blu-ray player and get a recommended code as well as a list of alternate codes if the first one didn't work. In each case, the first suggested code worked correctly (however I didn't "think" it was working as I will explain). The difficult part - there are a number of "secret codes" you may need to look up in order to get everything working as expected. These don't seem to be written down in any one place, I found them within various DirectTV forum/help pages. The issue arises from this remote being targeted for use with a DirectTV box (duh). So for example when you program in your TV, the volume buttons seem to do nothing. The input button seems to do nothing. Other stuff works. So if you are like me, you go back and try other codes and basically you don't get it working. So the trick is, you need these various 3-digit codes which bypass the DirectTV functions. You will know this is the case if you press a button (like volume up), and look at which LED lights up at the top - it defaults to go to the DTV receiver no matter what the slider switch is set to. So to fix this: Activate TV INPUT button: Mode switch to TV Press and hold Mute and Select until the LED blinks twice Enter: 9 6 0 If the LED flashes twice after entering 9 6 0, the Input button is enabled. If it flashes four times you've turned the Input button Off and need to repeat the above step to enable it again. (now input goes to TV) Send volume commands to home theater receiver: Mode switch to AV2 Hold Mute + Select Enter 9 9 3 (Now volume goes to AV2) Bottom line: This is probably the best made inexpensive universal remote, and possibly one of the best made remotes period. The online code lookup is way more convenient than flipping through hundreds or thousands in a tiny printed manual. Programming is easy but watch out for the "secret codes" I mentioned in the review, as some of your buttons may appear to not work but they are mostly likely going to the DTV output and need to be remapped.

This design is so old, it came out so many years ago, they've switched designs over the years but I keep coming back to this one. This is my favorite remote of all the DirecTV remotes. It's really easy to use, it has the colored keys that none of the new ones have anymore. Buttons are actual buttons, not the levers/switches they use for the volume and channel keys on the newer ones. If you haven't tried those before, it is so easy to change the channel on accident just by hitting it or touching it just from picking it up, I hate the newer ones, this one doesn't do that, this one doesn't change the channel until you tell it too. It's very easy to program too, they give you instructions on how to do it, it's very simple & by the way it can be programmed to work with the newer boxes even though this is a older version of remotes. This is their best one in my opinion

As advertised. The buttons all worked and was easily and quickly programed. There are a lot of buttons and could be a little confusing or intimidating for elderly users. I have muscular dystrophy and was concerned about hand/finger strength required for pressing the buttons. The buttons are light to press and responsive. I would recommend it.

Our Directv equipment was "upgraded" recently and with the new equipment came a "new and improved" remote, RC71. I hate the RC71 remote. I'd say that 95% of our television viewing is via the DVR. With the exception of a morning news show that plays while we get ready for work, we rarely watch live TV. The RC71 remote is shy one function key that turned out it be greatly missed - the Stop button. We had no idea how much we relied on that button and months later missed it enough to purchase a replacement RC65RX. Without the stop key it takes several keystrokes to get to the recorded program's menu, where this remote, the RC65RX, has that button as well as the color function keys. Now to what really matters to others - equipment. This remote woks on my DVR receiver model HR44-200, as well as the accompanying Whole Home Client, model C41-500. It did not come with programming instructions, but found them in the Directv website. There was some mild drama in the programming of the remote, but turned out that the issue was that the accompanying batteries were bad. I didn't expect batteries at this price so was not a big deal. The only reason I've not given this 5 stars is because I rarely do - there's often room for improvement. Speaking of price, I was tempted to purchase another one for use in the front room, but this one works on both tvs (same brand) so there's no need. It may be important to note that I don't have a need for the works through walls mode (don't know which is which so won't specify) and I don't care for the lag of that function so I've got this one set up using the point and shoot setting.

I love this remote, my previous one started falling apart, and some of the buttons were not working well - I had this remote set up in minutes - I let the tv/directv box guide the process and had no issues. I am able to use my Firestick, everything just works.

Seams great but you may have to call direct to get it set to your tv it doesn't have every code in it but that computer direct has with eventually get you what you need

I put in batteries, apparently I pushed a button and Genie came on. Did what it said for TV and it's changing channels and adjusting volume perfectly. Mine said NEW on packaging and has the DirecTV printed on it. Very happy. Old remote only had 2 buttons left working and I was so frustrated
