  • Deal breaker
If you are considering this model or the same camera with the bullet enclosure, the RLC-824A, there is a very important reason that these models only get conditional three-star acceptance from me. Please read about all of the features first, then before making a decision read about the one critical feature these cameras lack that may be a deal breaker for your needs. WHAT IT DOES This is one of several recently added outdoor video security cameras that pack a host of new features, like person and vehicle recognition, time-lapse playback and maybe the biggest - being able to see full color in the dark. They also add a loud alarm that is meant to scare off intruders and the ability not only to hear through the camera’s microphone but now to be able to talk to someone in the camera’s view. WHAT IT DOES RIGHT The image quality is incredible in bright daylight, almost as good as a recent 4k high definition television. You will finally be able to present evidence that clearly show’s a suspect’s face, though be aware that in real life most judges won’t actually accept home security or doorbell cam video as evidence. This camera has a more narrow angle of view, in other words more telephoto, than some of the previous cameras. That can be a plus or a minus depending on how you’re using it. It is one of their best all metal enclosures with (finally) a mounting and adjustment system that works and makes sense. WHAT IT DOES POORLY I have been a Reolink customer for many years, I’ve depended on their products to do something most other brands don’t which is to constantly push firmware and software updates and introduce new cameras that are compatible with existing equipment (read more about that below). This is not at all one of their best efforts. It has a tiny speaker and under the best conditions the sound is tinny, scratchy and almost unintelligible to the person in view of the camera. The time-lapse feature is a gimmick that can only be used in a very particular way, not through your normal NVR playback methods. And that big feature about being able to see color in the dark? Nope, see more about that below. It can be a deal breaker. COMPATIBILITY This company has one thing going for them that most brands don’t, which is backward compatibility with your old existing NVR and smartphone apps and can be mixed with older Reolink camera. But there is a hitch. It’s not fully plug and play without manually updating the NVR firmware and that of each camera individually - a daunting task that may scare some non-technical people away. Unfortunately some people don’t understand the importance and value of this being essentially a closed loop system, which simply means it is designed from the ground up that all components are meant to be this same brand. Some people get frustrated that it won’t work with other brands (at least as well) or that it doesn’t work with their third-party app so they dismiss all the good things because they don’t understand it. I don’t see it that way - I have not once run into any compatibility issues in almost 15 years of buying products from this company. POSSIBLE DEAL BREAKER Okay, now let’s get to the one thing this model (and the similar model) lacks. For some users it may not be a concern but for others it could mean a hard no. Unfortunately for me it meant I could not use this otherwise fine camera. The missing feature is that these cameras DO NOT have IR illuminators. I confirmed this in writing with the manufacturer. That means they will not switch to a B&W image at night using infrared illumination. Every Reolink camera I’ve ever owned (a couple of dozen of them) and most other brands use IR to give you a usable, but lower resolution, monochrome image after dark. So far no security camera has been able to see color in total darkness, they all need some kind of light. With these two models what they do is use what they call spotlights, which is exactly what they are, bright white LED lights that allow the camera to product a full-color image at night. They give you the choice of either having those lights stay on all the time, only at night or designated hours or only when triggered by motion. As I have explained, regardless of what the ads say about detecting smart motion, that is just not real life. Anything - a moving leaf, a feather floating by, an flying bug - they all can and will trigger motion detectors. That’s why my experience with such gimmicks as person or vehicle recognition are just that, advertising fluff, they are just not that smart. The gotcha about having to turn on spotlights to be able to “see in the dark” may not always a concern but it can be a huge problem if that means turning on bright white spotlights at night for the camera to work where you don’t want them to. And let me define the word work, these two models will not see ANY image in darkness, color or not, unless the spotlights are on. That means you have to consider that carefully. If you are okay with that, these may be great cameras and they will see an image at night with the lights on that almost looks like daylight, for about 20-30 feet depending on conditions. But that’s only with the spotlights on. If you don’t want to shine a bright light into visitors’ eyes, or you don’t want to upset neighbors (or your own sleep) with the spotlights turning on and off, or if your HOA has rules against it, or any other reason the bottom line final answer is that it is a deal breaker, and these cameras are NOT for you, they will not work in darkness at all. YES OR NO It’s a tough decision based on the cameras not having IR illuminators. That makes it very difficult to rate because if that’s not a problem I would give them five stars. If it is a deal breaker I would give them one star. My fairest decision is that I consider that a flaw and that makes it impossible to be considered perfect. For that reason they earn three stars with a very big conditional statement that they are not for everybody. The bottom line is I needed a camera that could see at night, I don’t care if it is not in color, in fact a good B&W image can actually be sharper than a color one at night and the newest models say they can see up to 130 feet at night, which is a hundred more than this camera can see in color. There is a brand new version of the RLC-810A which is essentially identical to this camera except it DOES have IR illuminators so it can work at night without bright glaring spotlights and it’s about the same price. And for the first time now you can choose the usual white housing or the brand new black one. I had to return my camera and exchange it for the newer one just mentioned because for me the spotlights were a deal breaker I couldn’t get around or overlook. ... show more

  • I liked this camera and its system but it needs improvements
Review report: (I cannot upload videos or photos because of privacy issues) Reolink 4K Outdoor Security Camera, Smart Human/Vehicle Detection Work with Google Assistant PoE IP Camera, 256GB Micro SD Storage for 24/7 Recording (not Included), RLC-810A. I got the NVR with 2 Terabits. Reolink 4K PoE NVR 8 Channel Pre-Installed 2TB Hard Drive 4K/5MP/4MP/1080P HD 24/7 Surveillance Recording Home Security Camera System Video Recorder RLN8-410. The best I can describe the Reolink camera system in a few words is: "The RLC-810A PoE 8MP, still a work in progress." There are many things I like about this camera and system. But it still a work in progress. I believe they can make this system better to meet professional standard requirements for outside cameras. As this camera is ok if you want to watch things, it is not so good for reading and adapting light automatically. This camera did not meet the specifications of my project. I want to give a fair review. So, here is my impressions of this camera. First, this camera has some dependencies. I end up getting their NVR so I could test the camera in its optimum stage. Dependencies: 1. NVR for recording 24/7 Dependencies if you do not have an NVR: 1. Memory card for recording if you do not have an NVR and, 2. a PoE injector switch + Ethernet cable if you do not have an NVR. Otherwise one will have to use an electrical power cord with an extension, (not supplied). This camera does not come with a power cord. If you are going to connect via PoE, you will have to get a PoE switch injector. Without a switch injector, you must connect the camera using an electrical AC/DC power cord. My project is to record vehicles, with their respective license plate in a determined time to access their speed. There are many things good in the Reolink system but the camera will fail to read a vehicle license plate, which makes this camera useless for collecting evidence. If you want a camera to only watch people and landscapes, then this camera is ok for you. Software: 4 Stars I will give 4 Stars for the software because it needs improvements. Their software needs improvements and does have a learning curve to figure out many of its features. However, it is not that difficult to learn and operate. They are available for Mac and Windows. On the Mac, they have a desktop version, iPad, and iPhone. The Playback function needs some improvements. One needs to be able to download a video for an event only, start/end with 5/10 seconds before and 5/10 seconds end, instead, we have to download the entire one-hour video. Materials: 5 Stars + I will give 5 Stars to these camera-built materials. The camera housing, attachments are very strong. The memory card insert screws must have some improvements with safety grips so the thing small screws won't fall off somewhere when you are inserting the memory card in and out. Connectivity: I will give 5 stars + for connectivity because I had no problems connecting this camera with the LAN ip using the browser and their GUI portal. I also did not have any issues connecting to their desktop app. Both are good at connecting to the camera. If you are getting their NVR, you will be using the desktop app for a computer, iPad, or iPhone. I am on the Mac, so I downloaded the Mac Reolink app for my desktop computer. Out of the box, I inserted a 128 GB memory card on the back of the camera. Be very careful to not lose the screws as the same can fall off and you will be expending your day trying to find it. I connected the ethernet cable to the port on my second router and use the electrical AC/DC power cord. I log into the router and got the LAN IP address of the camera. So, the camera is very good at connecting to the network. Now, let's go for the outside test: So, here comes my frustrations with the camera. The camera was placed 5 feet from the curb. So it was very close to the street. They say that the camera has 8MP and will record vehicles and their license plate. With the vehicles moving about, it did not record the video with enough quality for capturing a vehicle license plate. The vehicle needs to stop or be very slow right underneath the camera. When do you think that will happen in real life? Some of the videos also were not smooth and did gag on at some points. Lens Video and Image Quality Stream: I am dividing the video and image quality into 2. 1. Video Image quality for watching: 4 stars This camera lacks what we call, "adaptive lighting". As the hours go by, the light changes and if the Sun is a bit up, you will have a wash-out image. This company should step up in its game. That just gives the client unnecessary work. I had to manually work on the layout of the data entry adjusting the settings. 2. Video Image quality for reading: 1 star This needs to improve and, improve a lot! This camera does not read the car's license plate clearly as it should with cars in movement. The quality needs to go up! The sensor, the speed, and frames per second of the recording also need to go up. In my case, it defeats my whole project to have these videos as evidence. The night videos are useless. As this camera does not have filters, any light will burn the images. The only thing you will be able to watch (barely) is the landscape. They could solve this issue by making the camera identifying and take a 16mp picture of each choosing license plate incident. Then we would have the video for watching and the selected license pic of the vehicle for reading. Notifications: 2 Stars They need to improve that! I have set to record vehicle incidents only. I got tons of fake/false notifications as the camera pickup wind, birds, and insects flying in front of it and miss the vehicle incidents. I had to turn off the notifications altogether because it also drops frames and fails to record the important things like the whole pathway incident of the vehicle speed. At times, the notifications stop together. I would have to go back to the NVR back up to get the lost data. After all, I just did not look at the notifications any longer. Sound: 4 Stars Both sound and image are a very important part of a recording camera. Sony has the best sound quality on the market. The sound of this camera is good but it can be choppy at times because of the wind. As it is important to get the vehicle's loud sounds, a filter needs to separate the wind and pick up the loud sounds of vehicles. All videos were recorded on a perfect day. Using the Desktop App, the resolutions for streaming are: For Clear Mode: 3840 x 2160 pix <-- this is their best quality. 2560 x 1440 pix 2304 x 1296 pix For Fluent Mode: 640 x 360 pix The video from the desktop app is better. You will be able to record in their so-called HD and, download the video on "Clear", which is their max resolution of 3840 x 2160 pix size directed to your computer. If you change to 2304 x 1296 pix, it seems that you get a zoom forward. You can record and download the file on your computer thru this app. No automatic adaptive lighting in this camera: 0 stars This camera needs more day/night filters to block the vehicle's headlights and the tailback Lic plate light for speeds from 0 to 60+ MPH. In addition, the ability to do automatic adaptive lighting as the daylight changes from morning to dusk and from Dusk to Dom, from Dom to Midnight. Night Vision Recordings: 0 Stars Ok, I stay up a little later and I was able to work on the night vision. Like I said before, this camera will choke if a light is pointed at the iris. It cannot adapt, so the video image will have white spots and block the image to the point of unrecognizable quality. Do not use the IR if there is any kind of light. The IRL(Infra-read lights), is only for complete darkness. Since there are no filters, do not expect this camera to read anything at night. But you can watch and try to be psychic to figure out what was that? *** Companies that sell these cameras must be aware that we are not children playing with cameras. A camera must be good enough to serve as evidence. A camera that cannot at least record a vehicle license plate, day or night for me, is useless. I understand that as one goes higher on the pixel level, more memory will consume. That should not be an issue as equipment and memory are getting much cheaper these days. I will be waiting for their 12MP. I think they should go for the 16MP and work on those filters, adaptive lighting/license plate reading on moving vehicles day and night so we can get a picture quality they are advertising on their website. These are well-known technologies for decent surveillance equipment. Resuming: What this camera needs to become the best: 1. Automatic Adaptive lighting 2. Anti Glare Filters to separate the image from light day/night. 3. Better notification system that ignores birds, insects, bushes, and wind 4. Be able to read a license plate of a vehicle traveling at least at 50mph on sides A and B of the street day/night. 5. A microphone filter to ignore the wind. 6. NVR Playback slider needs some improvements. Do this and you will become the number one leader in security cameras on the market. Until then, it will still a children's play. Good things about this system: 1. Software is excellent on connectivity both thru the Browser is ok. The app is very good on the computer desktop, iPad, or Phone. The visual resolution will be dependent on your monitor quality. 2. Good for watching things in the daytime. 3. NVR recording works 24/7, no issues. ... show more
