  • Second set bought good stuff
Style: Cables+Mounts Size: 400W Panel+MPPT 40A Controller
This is the second kit I bought from Renogy and here on Amazon. You can't beat the value for the money. Easy to set up. As long as you watch a bunch of videos. The only complaint would be if you want to run this four panel system in a line across, or up and down, you have to buy extension cables. (sold separately) But of course you do. If you want to hook them up in a big square, no problem. Ready to go right out of the box. I tried to call tech support about it but just can't get through. I get it, it costs money to answer stupid questions. I have found that Renogy is sending out good quality and quickly. Where they are missing the boat, in my opinion, is that the kits are so good that frankly every home should have one for emergency power. And more. Would we pay a little bit more so that the cables we need are in the box? Of Course we would. Would we pay a little more to have someone at the other end of a phone for newbies trying to hook things up? Of course. The easier and more user friendly all this solar stuff is just makes more people buy them. I can't tell you how many people stop by asking my my system. Always the same questions. I try and explain it and they mostly just walk away thinking its all so confusing. It isn't. About the time I mention what you need isn't in the kit box, you know ....ext cables, adaptors, inverters....they just start rolling their eyes. Don't get me wrong, If I bought a little off grid cabin I would buy a big 8 panel kit in a heartbeat from Renogy, wouldn't even look at another company. But....and here is the big but......should I really have to spend all day trying to find videos on how to hook it all up? Would I pay a little more to have maybe a piece of paper showing me what to hook up where on the panels going this way or that? Would I like all the cables included in the kit that I might use in different configurations? I think you know the answer and I bet you would too. ... show more

  • Can I do this?
Style: Cables+Mounts Size: 400W Panel+MPPT 40A Controller
I am not an electrician. I am not a good carpenter, but this was a great project. I could not get power to my shop, so I thought I'd give this a try. The panels came delivered with the box in tatters. All the panels were shattered. I called Amazon and they shipped new panels immediately and arranged for the broken panels to be picked up. That's what I call support. I built a frame for the 4 panels, side by side. All the cables that I needed worked. The charge controller, battery monitor, 3000w inverter and (4) 100w panels were all Renogy. I bought (2) CHINS 12V 100AH LiPO4 batteries. That's it! How does it work? Great! I have LED lights combined draw 15amps. The battery monitor shows how many hours of battery are left at the current draw. Even after 3 days of clouds, and the monitor gets down to 20% or so, it only takes a couple of hours to bounce back to 100%. On clear days and all lights on, it would show that I have 40 hours of battery left. You get the idea. A really worth while project to do. Renogy and Amazon made it happen. ... show more

  • I want to love it, but I can't yet...(Rover40)
Style: Cables+Mounts Size: 400W Panel+MPPT 40A Controller
I was really looking forward to receiving this kit and getting it installed. It's pretty much complete at this point, but there have been some hiccups along the way and some issues I've noticed regarding some of the product quality. Installing the panels themselves was very straightforward, with just attaching 4 brackets to each panel and bolting them to the roof of my box truck, using silicone to seal the cracks and screw holes, and Black 3M VHB tape to really ensure that those brackets aren't going anywhere. I did notice(which can be seen in the pictures) that the panels sit very close to the mounting surface which will be an issue if I ever need to take the panels off. They only provide standard hex bolts and washers so getting it off might be easy but getting them back on and tightened up would be incredibly difficult. If you want that ability, anticipate installing these things on rails, or get some different brackets. That being said, I don't anticipate having to remove these panels often if ever. Better hope none of them fail. On the interior-side of the build is where things got a bit more flakey. I got the MPPT charge controller so I could wire the panels in series to charge my 235AH lead acid vented batteries without such a high current running through the wires(for those who don't know, MPPT plus wiring the panels in series ups the voltage but keeps the amperage the same, and the MPPT controller converts the high voltage from the 4 panels back down to 12-14V). The charge controller looks of high quality at first glance, and the screen provides a lot of information so you don't need a secondary panel which is super awesome. It also has nice features like overvolt protection and reverse polarity protection(though installing fuses is still recommended ESPECIALLY if wiring in parallel). However, the terminal screws rattle around in their housings which makes me concerned for possible issues with too much clearance. This fear is compounded by the unit I received having a critical issue: the BAT+ terminal screw does not want to budge in either direction, so I am fairly certain it is cross threaded or improperly installed in some way. The unit states that there are no serviceable parts inside so it should not be opened, and due to this I have contacted the manufacturer via their website. Hopefully they will right the situation, and I will be able to leave a better review of my experience with the product and the company. I was still able to test the unit and ensure that it does what it says it does despite this, because the battery cables actually fit so snuggly into the holes that it is very difficult to fit them in! I had to take a razor to both of the battery cables after shortening them to actually cut down the insulation because it was way too tight to squeeze into the respective holes. That seems like a bit of an oversight for selling this as a kit in my opinion, but it was only a few minutes of extra work to get them fitting. All in all, does the product do what I expect it to do? Yes, but are the parts and service up to the quality I would expect with the associated price tag? I hesitate at this point to say yes due to my personal experience, but we'll see how things unfold after their customer service department gets back to me. ... show more
