  • Off Grid Travel Trailer
Size: 200W Panel+20A MPPT Controller Style: Solar Starter Kit
I wanted a decent system to go off grid camping (fridge,h2o pump, lights, fan, tv and a 17 year old harbor freight inverter (has never failed and It's been in my work van running 120v lights, drills, etc the whole time, lol!! (2000w)). I have been watching this set-up (20 watt MPPT) and Rich Solars equivalent (was a bit more complete with parts). I decided to go with this this company and not the other. The parts all came in one box in good condition. There was one manual, I am a master mechanic and restore vehicles and am very efficient in fabricating and electronics. The manual had absolutely nothing about the panels - Zero!!! Ok so I could see that hooking in Parallel was not possible without additional connectors so hooking in Series (Positive to Negative - panel to panel) and then running the other 2 + and - cables through a Gland and through the roof to the controller. For my set-up Series was the way to go MPPT can handle and prefers that from what I have read. I did go to Renogy's website for panel info. and they said (LOL) if you have a 24 volt system run them in series and if you have a 12v system run them in parallel----WHAT, it's as if they don't even understand that their Controller puts out the correct charging voltage (which is the voltage it sees from your batteries 12 or 24). I digress, I found that almost all information from this company is either, wrong, terribly mis-translated, written info. different and contradicting to their video info. on same items, manual missing important install and programming info, etc....etc... I had to fabricate some cross racks (pics incl) to mount the Solar panels to the tin roof of my 1974 Skyline Aljo (I just finished a full restoration!). Now panels mounted, cables run through, controller mounted (do yourself a favor and label all the connections on the front face of the controller before installing (these knuckleheads put that info on the bottom), so unless your mounting the controller over 6' high you will not be able to see it. Controller labeled, including program buttons and wired. As soon as the Controller saw the PV(solar)panels it came on and flashed that the batteries were missing (impressive) wired in the batteries and the controller was happy. Ughhh time to refer back to the Manual, Sketchy at best so - I watched some videos from other RV'ers that installed the same controller - 100% of them said that Renogy had left out important controller battery charging program info. (at this point it's what I expected). Mainly that to set-up Float, boost (some call bulk) and Equalize settings you must set program to USR (small icon on the bottom) make your settings and then in my case switch it back to FLD (flooded lead acid). This is nowhere in the manual!!!!! Hey no big deal chicom it just determines how long your batteries will last. Moving on...so I'm programmed correctly for my 2 100 ah flooded batteries Settings for me were: Boost 14.8 Float charge 13.2 Equalize charge 15.5 So everything hooked up and programmed and the system works great, Temp outside was 87 and partly cloudy. I ran the 12 volt Danfoss BD-50 Refrigerator I built all day(38F fridge-2 Freezer) along with the maxxair ceiling fan and water pump and the batteries never went below 98%. So in conclusion the product on initial use is a winner, the tech writers and translators are a complete fail. Be prepared to source your install information from other installers. Oh and one more gripe there is no way to switch to Farenheit for the temp. Your stuck with the commie celsius, lol. UPDATE: We traveled 800 miles over 8 days and stayed around the 46th parallel for most of that time (first week of July). The solar system and 17 year old harbor freight inverter worked great (provided everything we needed and never even got warm)!! We ran our fridge (12v) the entire time and watched tv/dvd (AC), lights (AC/DC), H2O pump (12v) and maxxair fan(12v). All with 2 O'riellys Super Start 100 AH series 31 deep cell flooded bats @ $100.00 each!! Nothing got hot, no issues at all. Overall so far I think this is a good starter kit. Update 10-3-2022: After a lot of travelling and learning from this Solar system what we need and don't need I have made a few upgrades. One of the weak points in the system was the draw from the fridge (only when running, although efficient still a draw). I added a third and fourth 100 watt panel and wired all four in Series/Parallel (2 pair in Series-Connected in Parallel), Same 100ah hour flooded deep cell bats (now wired in Series 24v) and a 24v 1200 watt inverter. I would like to replace the flooded with Lithium but it's just to expensive right now. I found that purchasing a roll of solar cable and Male/Female terminals to make your own cables saves money. Important tips for Renogy Controllers: 1. Have a mirror and flashlight to install cables (which are on the bottom of controller (terrible design). I found soldering the stripped end of the solar panel cables before attaching to controller helps them go into the slot better and stay put. It really helps to look in the mirror with flashlight to note the way that it tightens onto cable (it's very easy to get wrong and the cable will be loose). When you tighten the cable screw it pulls the gripper plate Towards you your cable must be in between the 2 gripper plates for it to be held this is very difficult because you cannot see the area where the cable goes (renogy a removable bottom panel please). 2. If you are using 24v renogy doubles the 12v settings - so set everything as you would for 12v in the (USR) section and it will automatically double. 3. Always hook up Battery first!!!!! Than Solar Panels (PV) - thus - Unhook Solar first then Battery/s. 4. Happy Travels and remember we may all be off grid soon!! Master Mechanic 1988- present ... show more

  • Works (mostly) - Tech support is mediocre at best
Size: 200W Panel+20A MPPT Controller Style: Solar Starter Kit
UPDATE 10/21/22 It took a week of back and forth (one email every 24-48 hours) to finally get the right answer from the folks at Renogy. Once they finally decided to believe me that the display was defective on my controller they did promptly send me a replacement. Therefore, I'm adding a star to my review. The product seems solid in the early going but, like so many others, their customer service needs help! ORIGINAL TWO STAR REVIEW: I got the unit installed on my travel trailer ok and it seems to be working as far as charging the battery. I was able to get about 120 watts at noon on an October day with my 200 watt system and on my little trailer something will almost always be trying to shade one of the panels no matter what I do as mounting options are limited. With a bit lower sun, I'm still getting 50-60 watts (4 amps or so) so that'll still help and I expect it will do much better during summer months. My issue is that the display does not work on my controller. See photo. My finger is pointing to the LED/LCD screen which will not come on regardless of how many buttons I push. I'm 48 hours in to dealing with Renogy's "customer service" who's done nothing but treat me like I'm stupid. When they wanted information to insure I had voltage, etc, I sent them a screen shot from the blue tooth data on my phone (I have a BT-1 transmitter) and the reply was that the display was working but that it isn't backlit! Apparently, the "technician" thought my screenshot was a picture of the display. I cannot, in good conscience recommend Renogy as a company to deal with. Honestly, my plan was to use blue tooth mostly anyway since my controller is mounted in a bit of an awkward spot but it's brand new so I want everything to work! As long blue tooth works I'll just use the unit but I'd never buy from Renogy again with all the other options out there these days. Lesson learned! ... show more

  • Great Setup - It gets the Job Done
Size: 200W Panel+20A MPPT Controller Style: Solar Starter Kit
I have a 25' Travel Trailer with an electric fridge so the one or two times a year I boondock I needed something to maintain the battery bank charge. My battery bank is 2 Interstate 80 AH each flooded batteries, nothing fancy. My first time (only time) using this setup was a weekend with perfect sun all day long, in September, in the the North East. With the charge controller and the phone app I was able to see I drained 11 AH from the batteries overnight. These two panels had the battery back up to 100% in a matter of an hour. It maintained them all day long at 100% even with the fridge, lighting and the fan for the heating system. I did opt for the blue tooth adapter which you can see in the picture. With this and the DC home app you get a wealth of useful and useless information. I did do the install myself in a couple of hours. ... show more

  • Just what I needed.
Size: 200W Panel+40A MPPT Controller Style: Solar Starter Kit
I bought this to keep our 12VDC fridge running in the camper while boondocking. It does the job great. I run it with an 81Ah deep cycle Interstate battery. We were camping when I hooked it up for the first time. My controller was showing 11.7 volts right before I plugged in the panels. Within an hour I was up to 12.7 volts. With full sun it had no problems keeping the fridge running and we used the lights and Fantastic Fan as needed. The next day, I was curious as to how much it would keep up. I ran the Fan on manual all day long as well as the fridge and my battery stayed full until the sun started going down. I turned off the fan and it topped off my battery with the remaining sunlight we had left. If all you need to do is keep your RV fridge going and run your fan and a light now and then this is all you need. I do like that the controller is rated where I can add two more 100 watt panels if I decide to. For my initial set up, I used the box the kit came it as a kick stand for the panels. Faced East in the morning, laid them down flat on top of the box at noon, the propped up facing west in the evening. I plan to mount them flat on the roof eventually. ... show more
