My youngest kid is really into the Octonauts, and loves water play toys that could fit into that world. This is the first time I've seen something like this, and I knew he'd be excited for it. There's a lot of things to like about this. The construction seems very solid - the plastic doesn't feel cheap and lightweight and it looks really good. I ordered the orange one and although the box showed a yellow one, the toy inside was actually orange. The waterproof battery compartment is secured by 2 screws and 2 clips. If you get debris in the seal it'll probably still be bad, so be careful about that. It comes with an extra battery to give you more runtime, which is nice (and a small screwdriver). The boat steers with tank-style steering via small propellers on either side. They're pretty powerful and can move the boat around quickly. It works fine in reverse and can even spin in place. The water jet has a surprising amount of range, maybe 10 feet. It has an intense, repeating needle jet blast. It's great for shooting things like rubber ducks or other boats. There's a water sensor, and none of the boat functions works out of the water. Things shut down pretty quick when you lift it out of the water. There's a demo button on the remote which is really unnecessary. Being able to turn on and off the light would have been better. The remote is nicely sized for a child's hand but an adult can still easily use it. The only thing that's disappointing is the light, it's not very bright. It does let you know when the water sensor is active or not. Overall, I'm really happy with this. The strong water squirter makes this a lot more fun than just a driving around toy (although it's pretty fun driving around too - I've rigged up a hook so it can tow other boats).

Swimming season is here and this RC boat has been such a fun way for our kids to play in the pool. The boat works exceptionally well.. the sealed battery case works exactly as advertised, and I love the waterproof lights that really make the boat stand out. If you're wondering why it's not turning on, we found out by trial and error that the boat has to be submerged to turn on. Kind of a cool feature but it did throw us for a loop the first time we used it!

A toy review really boils down to two things. Does it work, and is it fun? I guess durability should be on the list too. Our granddaughter absolutely LOVES this RC boat. It's small and sort of friendly looking like a little creature. The lights and the water canon are both really appealing to kids. The remote control is a familiar design that a lot of kids are already comfortable with, and it's intuitive to use. It's made out of a solid, good quality plastic. I've checked several times and it doesn't appear to be leaking water inside anywhere, so I expect it will last as well as could be expected. I only have one problem with it. She loves playing with it so much she keeps wanting to go to the pool by herself. If you have really small children, you might want to consider putting it up between uses. I can't take a star away just because the toy is so fun that she actually wants to use it.

I guess there’s a kid in all of us and although I bought this for a kid, I find it hard to give up. I put it in the condo pool and the dog chases it from one end to the other and when he gets close I squirt him with the water cannon in the front. I enjoy it, and the dog loves it. Operationally the remote control takes a little getting used to as each lever has control of a single motor (left and right), especially when the boat is traveling towards you but you figure it out fast enough. The batteries seem to have a very long charge so that’s not much of a problem. Speed is slow perfect for small children (and dogs) but teens and up could get bored rather quickly. The cannon pumps water from the surrounding water so there’s no need to fill anything up before you start. The cannon emits a tiny stream of water about 10 feet, enough to know if you’ve been sprayed but not enough to soak anyone.
