  • Hollywood Romance
Format: Kindle
This story beautifully explores ambition, love, compassion, and the quiet strength it takes to face illness while still daring to dream. The Hollywood backdrop adds glamour and intensity, but at its core, this book is deeply human. The characters feel real — layered, vulnerable, and fiercely driven. Their journey isn’t just about romance; it’s about purpose, sacrifice, resilience, and choosing love even when life makes it complicated. The way Kennedy Ryan handles illness is especially powerful. It’s honest, respectful, and woven into the story with such care. You feel the weight of it, but you also feel the hope. The love in this book isn’t shallow or easy — it’s intentional, mature, and rooted in compassion. And the chemistry? Unmatched. The tension, the longing, the emotional depth — every moment felt earned. Tropes: • Workplace romance • Slow burn • Forbidden love • Hollywood / Film industry setting • Grumpy x Sunshine vibes • Strong, ambitious heroine • Caretaking • Emotional / angsty romance • Found family undertones This book is about chasing dreams while holding onto your heart. It’s about choosing love in the middle of uncertainty. And it’s unforgettable. ... show more

  • 1000000000/5 stars!!!!!!
Format: Kindle
Kennedy Ryan did NOT come to play with Reel. This book absolutely wrecked me in the best possible way. I laughed, cried, swooned, screamed into my pillow, and immediately wanted to reread it the second I finished. Canon Holt and Neevah Saint have officially secured permanent real estate in my heart. What I loved most was that this wasn’t just a romance. It was a story about dreams, sacrifice, art, healing, family, identity, and finding the courage to take up space in a world that doesn’t always make room for you. The chemistry between Canon and Neevah was off-the-charts, but it was the emotional connection that completely undid me. Kennedy Ryan’s writing is on another level. Every page felt cinematic, beautiful, and intentional. I wasn’t just reading the story—I felt like I was living it alongside the characters. The Harlem Renaissance backdrop, the film industry setting, and the depth of every character made this book feel so much bigger than a typical romance. By the end, I was emotionally exhausted, completely satisfied, and already recommending it to everyone I know. Reel isn’t just a romance novel. It’s an experience. ... show more

  • Powerful, Poetic, and Unapologetically Real
Format: Kindle
This story had range. From stage lights to real-life spotlight, Reel draws you into the lives of Canon and Neevah with intensity, tenderness, and so much soul. What begins with heartbreak unfolds into a deeply moving love story, one that doesn’t shy away from chronic illness, grief, emotional wounds, or healing. Neevah’s Lupus diagnosis is a major thread, not just a plot point, and it’s handled with care. Her resilience in the face of a demanding career and a shifting sense of self made her story all the more powerful. There’s an emotional gravity to this book, but it’s never overwhelming. The pacing is cinematic, fitting for a story about making a movie, and the drama always feels earned. There were moments that literally took my breath away. I appreciated the focus on therapy, vulnerability, legacy, and the urgency to live well and love fully. The audiobook was a beautiful experience, especially with the inclusion of original music that made the story feel alive. A strong 4 stars. ... show more

  • This is One of My Top Reads for 2021
Overall Grade: More than all the ⭐️ “And Canon and Monk and Verity and all the storytellers, musicians, and artists who benefit from the path she forged. From the way she and so many others made for us during untenable circumstances, in adversity and against impossible odds. She carried me and I carry her, and somehow, we are knitted together in a way that reaches across generations, across years, binding our hearts.” Anticipation. Adulation. Affecting. These words explain the feelings going into Kennedy Ryan’s Reel. Reading Kennedy Ryan is a viscerally profound experience. The palpability of her words that bleed into scenes that grow into pages and metamorphize into fully realized stories overwhelms your senses and makes you feel the depth of emotion. Ryan's newest story, Reel, is quintessential Ryan. The turn of the page is a taunt. What will you encounter? What emotion will she evoke? What tragedy will she dispense? Reel is all of that. It's real emotion, it's real thinking, and it's real life. The profundity of Ryan's Reel is her attention to storytelling. There is always something more in her stories. It isn't simply a romance in this newest book. It's an interrogation of ideas such as art as a savior, the responsibility of representation and the need to amplify marginalized voices, storytelling as a marker of truth, equity for women, workplace innovations, and the gravity of disease. These ideas are emphatically drawn by Ryan to challenge readers, to stoke thinking, and to change the genre of romance. Reel makes us transcend the genre, focusing us on its art form through Ryan's exacting and brilliantly crafted storytelling. Those ideas, though, are but a single part of this book. With that, Ryan challenges people to live life in the moment, culling out every second since the past is dead and the future is but a promise. She utilizes her hero, Canon, and her heroine, Neevah to mete out that truth. Ryan underscores this truth with the power behind ambition if used for good to show the impact of her characters. And these are only Reel's messages. This book is philosophical and didactic giving it a weight that sets it miles beyond other romances. This doesn't even speak to the stylistic choices of Reel. There is brilliance afoot. Reel is cinematic in and of itself thanks to Kennedy Ryan's careful craftsmanship. She has made choices for this book that will thrill you because it plays with the narrative of romance. Add to that her already famous style, and you find yourself lost to her story. Her ability to paint the story into being with her words makes you surrender your heart to Canon and Neevah. This book set in the world of movies feels cinematic in its expression. Vivid moments carefully crafted to evoke specific emotions from its reader. There is intent with every word, every moment, and every page of this book. From word choice to allusion, from intentionally curated phrases to images wrought with fierce possession, you see Canon and Neevah's journey fashioned on the pages of Reel. It amazes me how Reel makes me think of the mantel of responsibility sitting firmly on the shoulders of a BIPOC author such as Kennedy Ryan. Based on her newest book, she wears it well, and as its book's reader, I feel privileged to have spent time in it, to have been challenged and titillated by it. But that's what she does so impressively. Kennedy Ryan's Reel is a story about stories. It's a reminder that all stories need space, and I found as I became lost in her book that I needed this one. I needed to feel challenged and mesmerized. I needed to be reminded of how much more the romance genre can be. I needed this book at this moment right now: a story about the past living fully whole in the present. And the promise of more stories in her Hollywood Renaissance series leaves me anticipatory for the rest. ... show more

  • AMAZING BOOK…please don’t walk, RUN to read this, RIGHT NOW!!!!
Format: Paperback
This book was AMAZING!!!! I’d give it a million stars if I could. Usually I read mystery/thriller novels, but I feel like, you know what? It’s been a while since I read a romance novel. I heard such good things about Reel, so I had to read it. This book was beautifully written, from beginning to end. I love how Kennedy Ryan empowers black women . I felt EVERY emotion. From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The connection between Neevah and Canon was so deep! It’s like they were meant to be together. If it wasn’t for monk even suggesting they go see that broadway play, who knows if they would’ve even met. I also loved Dessi’s story as well. Even the sex scenes with Neevah and canon were beautiful!!! I loved how Canon cherished her body and loved her no matter what, regardless of lupus/kidney failure diagnosis. I also loved how close Canon and his mom were, his mom’s love for photography , & all the wonderful lessons she taught him. I’d definitely read this book again!!!!! ... show more

Format: Kindle
all the components are here for a romance, the highly successful, muscular, good-looking heartthrob, the young woman, a pretty ingenue following a dream, and her sassy bff. the setting is the film world, canon holt is a director making his biggest film, the untold story of a singer, her love life and singing career, during the 1930s and 40s–from jim crow alabama to european highlife among the black performers, expats and touring bands, who found respect away from the segregation of the united states. after hearing neevah saint understudy on a broadway stage, canon knows he’s found his leading lady. their relationship doesn’t stay strictly professional for long. there are plenty of plot surprises to move the reader through the more than 400 pages written in an easy moving pace, filled with lots of graphic sex scenes as expected from contemporary romance books and movies to keep attention aroused. kennedy ryan surrounds her characters with space that begs to be filled. Since this book is part of a series, fans, old and new, after reading the final page will eagerly want and expect to read more about these characters. ... show more

  • EASILY a 5 star read
Format: Kindle
I stopped reading romance for awhile because I couldn’t find authors that stuck to the genre. Most of the romance was through micro tropes and just fell short for me. But thissssss. This is PURE romance. This is PURE love. I had all the feels reading this. I wish I could rewind time and go read it again.. truly. This was a story that had plenty of laughter, tears, uncertainty, promise, and love. Throughout the book we see both characters battling themselves internally while also fighting for each other. Fighting to keep each other standing. We also see the growth in not only the main characters but the side characters as well. The growth in the sister, mother, and my baby Monk!!! (Can’t waitttt to read Score next!!) but anywho… It’s a raw, emotional romance that sits with you after you read it. There’s no silly games being played and no third-act breakups. Everyone is grown and says what needs to be said. There’s vulnerability throughout the book, even with the pain that comes with it. They kept it Reel… get it…idc I laughed 🤭 Omg and Mama Remy!!! What a touching story. She showed Canon what love was and how to love Neevah through it all. Her and her sunsets…. ~~ “Mama always said waiting for sunsets was like waiting for a miracle you knew would come,” he says, his voice graveled with the emotion in his eyes. “How happy she must be to know I finally found mine.” I actually don’t know what else to say other than you need to pick it up, read it, cry, and smile as soon as you close it. Thank you Mrs. Ryan for giving us such a unique romance and the experience along with it 💚 … oh and I love me some red velvet too 🤭 ... show more
