This book is a great read but it came damaged. I didn’t notice it initially until I was finally able to create some quiet time and read it. Very disappointing because I don’t get opportunities to sit in a quiet space and relax with a good book. I didn’t give it low stars because the book itself is great. I know because I’ve read it before. I ordered this because I wanted the hardcover copy to keep vs the paperback from the library. I believe it may have happened during the packing process at Amazon or the seller’s facility. I don’t know but the packer obviously noticed this.

This book is no sequel. This book is no sequel. This book is no sequel. Now I have said that three times. No need to repeat. This book is more like a prequel to the character Midnight from Coldest Winter Ever. This book gives us insight on as to why he would never have been with Winter (or will be) she is an abomination to everything he believes in, and everything that he is. After reading this I went back and skimmed over the few passages that contained Midnight and was blown away, like now, his contempt, his aloofness, his strength made sense to me. In Midnight (the book) we get a glimpse at a man named RS, I guess this man will be Ricky Santiaga, Winter's father, but for now there was not interaction between Midnight and RS. The closet Midnight has gotten to RS is playing basket ball for Vega a Capo in RS organization. This was a well thought out, well written book. I must say I was a bit disappointed in that it made all Black Americans looked badly. Yeah we are mixed up, mix guided at times, but we are all not terrible people. This book also brings to mind what I have said for years, I am not an African-American, I am an American of African descent. Because there is nothing African about me. I say this because I WAS married to an African Muslim. Raised in between Chad and Sudan. After living with him, his family and his beliefs, I know there is a BIG difference between us, so call African-Americans and Africans living in American. But back to the book: I guess everyone just Assumed this book was going to be a sequel, because Sister Souljah didn't make it known in well in advance that this was not a going to be one. And almost everyone wanted to see Midnight reunite with Winter, I didn't though because I re-read the ending of CWE and Winter hadn't changed in the last years of her incarceration. She was still defiant, vain, and still blamed everyone for what happen instead of accepting her own actions that led her to her imprisonment. Why would Midnight throw away a wife his children (Winter's sisters), his sister and mother and his beliefs, just so Winter could have him? Nah, I don't see that happening. As for the ending of CWE, he has a wife, we know this, but it was hard now by reading Midnight A Gangster's Love Story to know who that wife is, will it be Akemi, Bangs or Suduna? Will he be reunited with Akemi? Will he return to find Bangs still waiting and take her for a second wife? Or will he end up with Sudana a proper Muslim wife for him? Just who is the "wife" at the end of CWE? And when will the next book come. Sister Souljah don't make us wait another ten years. This book was a good book regardless of it not being a sequel and leaving us with yet more unanswered questions. SS did her thing, she is a very talented writer and her research was evident by the knowledge she expressed though Midnight. Erase CWE out your mind, pretend you never read it first, and then read this, and you will enjoy and respect her story telling skills if nothing else. Then re read CWE, or at least the parts with Midnight and you will see both characters in a different light. I know I do, and I cringed every time Winter used her body to get at Midnight, I was like "oh no you are pushing him further and further away." I loved this book. I just hate that it was more like a pre-pre quell and now I have to wait for a next one. But unlike some authors who simply drag out a character and have nothing to offer in growth development, we still have yet to see, How did Midnight come to work for Santiaga? What exactly did he do for him? And where was he and what was he doing during the time he last saw Winter until her mother's funereal? And how did it come about that he adopted Lexus and Mercedes? Sister S, you got some explaining and writing to do and I don't want to wait another 10 years for it either.

I think it is a shame that people can't move past the Coldest Winter Ever. I never heard there were even any plans to make a sequel of that book just possibly a movie. Just because the title of the book is "Midnight" I am not sure how every one was misled into thinking this would be a sequel when clearly the young man on the cover of this book is a teenager and Midnight in the Coldest Winter Ever was a grown man. I guess people don't read the synopsis of books anymore either. If there was to be a sequel one would think the logical progression would be for Winter to grow up and make better decisions and actually do something positive with her life, and by reading the majority of reviews on this website that story would not have interested most of these reviewers either. Midnight is a wonderful story about a young boy who is comes from Sudan to America and struggles to hold on to his religion and culture to name a few things while growing up as a Black male in America. He juggles being the protector for his family while falling and love and trying to do the right thing. It was a beautiful look into the Muslim religion and culture. It is a refreshing story and was beautifully written. It is a shame so many readers are so closed minded, they are truly missing out. I feel for you Souljah because many of your fans only want to read urban "ghetto" books and have not grown up enough to expand their thinking and reading. I am a lover of all types of books and can always appreciate a well written story. I thank You.

if you are not a reader, this book is not for you. i repeat it is not for you. if you think it is going to be very similar to the coldest winter ever, you are wrong. midnight is completely different. midnight is about the character midnight from the coldest winter ever. you know the mysterious guy who wont give winter the time of day. yea him. midnight is an intelligent read. it is long and tedious. heavily detailed laced. sister souljah presents midnight as an open book. he is not the average black male, as he is percieved to be. he has a foundation, a future and a past. he is wise beyond his years. i loved this book. the islamic faith is incoprated into every area in midnights life, for he truly is a devout muslim. midnight struggles with his dual identies. as a muslim, an african and immigrant. yet he manages to web them cohesively and creates structure out of a chaos world. midnight is vicous, he holds no bars. hes upfront in your face, and at times rather arrogrant. but hes also humble and full of humility. all he wants to do is create a world for him and his family. a world in which they can thrive and maintain. you may hate midnight or sister souljah after reading this book, for he brings up so many of the inconstiencies we have and throws it in your face. he doesnt try to embrass you, but rather question your reasoning. midnight is not perfect, hes far from it. sister souljah doesnt create a perfect character, for he is flawed just like everyone else. midnight gets under your skin and makes you examine your life from different angle. i read this book, thinking it was going to be a sequel of the coldest winter ever and it wasnt. i was disaappointed at first but i was to entrenched in the pages to utter a single complaint. midnight makes you question yourself and your composition. if you dont, you have missed the entire point of this book. fyi sister souljah is releasing porsche santiago in january 2013 and it will pick up where the coldest winter left off

All through this novel I had to remind myself l, he is only 14. A young man without a father in America... In NEW YORK... At 7 with only the memory of what a man is supposed to be. To have to model himself on his father's footsteps to help his mom and young sister. He took on A LOT. At 14 he did ALOT. Then I had to remember this is a fictitional urban street story about a young man who is able to broker deals on behalf of his mother while he is 7 to 14 years old. I mean this 7 year old boy was beating up kids twice his age, walkinging his mom safely to work, getting guns, mastering karate... All kinds of stuff. It's fiction. BUT art mimics reality. Cultures outside of America train their children for war at early ages. Discipline them in arts and other languages at early ages. Midnight is a fictitional character but his discipline for his religion, his work, and his ethics is not unreal. It's just foreign to Americans. Once I accepted my facts I was able to enjoy this book. Yes his critique of American culture and American women... Mostly African American women is harsh but he's 14 missing his father and being forced to navigate New York with only is Quran and his ideology of what is right. HOWEVER... I will say, some of the things he questioned about American culture was spot on and I respected the opinion. It didn't bother me that he had strong opinions. It actually made me question some of the culture we have accepted. Overall a great read. I will say Midnight does have sex in this book as a 14 year old. I'm against talking about sex when it comes to minors. I can't read that part so I skipped it.

Though I have not finished the book, it has really got my attention. So far, I really like the story. I have read "The Coldest Winter Ever" and that is the reason I bough this book. "The Coldest Winter Ever" had me addicted at page one. This book took me a little longer to get hooked (maybe because I am a woman), however "Midnight" has really given me insight into the culture and attitudes of a range of black males. I can harldy even believe that it is written by a woman. I think my only criticism is that the character seems to be written in light of perfection. No man is perfect and though I know Sister Souljah is trying to recapture the black male identity, vulnerablility in a man is also a positive male characteristic. He seems to be perfect (and lacking in humility), which makes it all a little unreal to me. Good book though and story line and it really causes me to have a broader understanding of the differences in which people are raised.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a very well written love story. It also makes you take a very good look at your own life and the values we CHOOSE to live by no matter what your religion or beliefs. I couldn't put the book down, and I didn't want it to end. And I have to agree with some of the other reviews; I was left with a lot of questions. What happened that made Midnight's family, minus the father, have to move to the U.S.? What happened to the father? When did Midnight offically meet Ricky Santiago? Does he get his wife back? It did answer some of the qustions I had about how he treated Winter in "The Coldest Winter Ever." But back to the high points of the book. Sister Souljah did an exellent job of making me fall in love with Midnight's character. It was amazing how some one so young could love the women in his life do deeply and be so mature. If every man could be so sincere. I guess that's why it's FICTION (LOL). Sister Souljah please fill in the pieces!!!!

After reading TCWE, I fell in love with Sister Soulja’s writing. I read this book years after reading TCWE and still was fascinated by it and could not put it down. I finished this book in a week and am ready for the next. The way she writes in the shoes of this young boy it’s as if she is really him. The knowledge of the Muslim faith and Ninjitsu and all of these cultures amazes me. The use of different languages and communication throughout the novel is beautifully done. Although Midnight is very judgemental when it comes to American culture, I think it is important to include that because those are true thoughts and makes you think about your own culture and actions as well as others. Sister is speaking from Midnight’s perspective and telling his story. Of course if he comes from another country he is gonna be shocked by how the people are in America. I know I would. Overall, I found the novel to be genius and really made me think about life and also motivated me. This young boy did so much for his family and held so many responsibilities. It made me want to do more and not take anything for granted. I highly recommend this to fans of Sister Soulja’s work!
