Kennedy Ryan did NOT come to play with Reel. This book absolutely wrecked me in the best possible way. I laughed, cried, swooned, screamed into my pillow, and immediately wanted to reread it the second I finished. Canon Holt and Neevah Saint have officially secured permanent real estate in my heart. What I loved most was that this wasn’t just a romance. It was a story about dreams, sacrifice, art, healing, family, identity, and finding the courage to take up space in a world that doesn’t always make room for you. The chemistry between Canon and Neevah was off-the-charts, but it was the emotional connection that completely undid me. Kennedy Ryan’s writing is on another level. Every page felt cinematic, beautiful, and intentional. I wasn’t just reading the story—I felt like I was living it alongside the characters. The Harlem Renaissance backdrop, the film industry setting, and the depth of every character made this book feel so much bigger than a typical romance. By the end, I was emotionally exhausted, completely satisfied, and already recommending it to everyone I know. Reel isn’t just a romance novel. It’s an experience.

The book is well written, with very interesting plots. I love how you can understand and feel both the emotions from Dessi story as it’s being performed within the book and also feel and relate to the main characters Neevah and Cannon emotions. Will def recommend listening to the book to also enjoy the beautiful singing that depicts both Neevah and Dessi beautiful voices.

I loved this book from beginning to end. The characters felt real, the romance was compelling, the emotional beats landed, and the Hollywood backdrop added just the right amount of glamour without overshadowing the story. Kennedy Ryan has a gift for creating layered characters, and I was invested in Neevah and Canon every step of the way. The pacing worked for me, the chemistry worked for me, and the balance between romance, personal growth, and career ambition felt just right. My only reason for not giving this five stars comes down to one small but recurring thing: the dialogue during intimate scenes. As a Black reader, it pulled me out of the story every time Canon used the word “cock.” It didn’t sound natural coming from him, and honestly, it didn’t sound natural coming from either of them. I wish more authors writing modern-day Black American characters would pay attention to how we actually speak. Word choice matters because dialogue is part of characterization, and that particular term felt more like romance-novel language than something I’d expect a contemporary Black man from America to say. It’s a minor critique in the grand scheme of things, but it was enough to keep this from being a perfect read for me. That said, Reel was beautiful, emotional, sexy, and incredibly well-written. I’ll definitely continue the series and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a romance with depth, heart, and unforgettable characters. ❤️📚

I stopped reading romance for awhile because I couldn’t find authors that stuck to the genre. Most of the romance was through micro tropes and just fell short for me. But thissssss. This is PURE romance. This is PURE love. I had all the feels reading this. I wish I could rewind time and go read it again.. truly. This was a story that had plenty of laughter, tears, uncertainty, promise, and love. Throughout the book we see both characters battling themselves internally while also fighting for each other. Fighting to keep each other standing. We also see the growth in not only the main characters but the side characters as well. The growth in the sister, mother, and my baby Monk!!! (Can’t waitttt to read Score next!!) but anywho… It’s a raw, emotional romance that sits with you after you read it. There’s no silly games being played and no third-act breakups. Everyone is grown and says what needs to be said. There’s vulnerability throughout the book, even with the pain that comes with it. They kept it Reel… get it…idc I laughed 🤭 Omg and Mama Remy!!! What a touching story. She showed Canon what love was and how to love Neevah through it all. Her and her sunsets…. ~~ “Mama always said waiting for sunsets was like waiting for a miracle you knew would come,” he says, his voice graveled with the emotion in his eyes. “How happy she must be to know I finally found mine.” I actually don’t know what else to say other than you need to pick it up, read it, cry, and smile as soon as you close it. Thank you Mrs. Ryan for giving us such a unique romance and the experience along with it 💚 … oh and I love me some red velvet too 🤭

This book is a masterclass in why storytelling matters. As someone who lives with chronic illness and autoimmune disease, I braced myself going in. Too often, chronic illness in fiction is mishandled -- romanticized, oversimplified, or forgotten about the moment it becomes inconvenient. Kennedy Ryan did the opposite, and I am so so so thankful. Neevah’s illness is portrayed with rawness and respect. The exhaustion. The negotiation with your own body. The fear of being perceived as “difficult.” The constant tug-of-war between a dream you love and a body that sometimes says "not today, bitch". I actually cried because I felt seen, not pitied. Seen in the flare days, the uncertainty, the shame we’re conditioned to carry, the resilience we don’t always want to claim. And Canon’s response to her illness? Protective, sweet, and NEVER patronizing. He loves her in a way that honors her whole self, including her body’s limits. That alone makes this book priceless to me. OK - that aside. The connection between Canon and Neevah is electric. It's definitely a take on the grumpy/sunshine trope. While they’re equals in ambition, in talent, in artistic devotion, their respect for each other creates this beautiful space filled with desire and vulnerability. The “forbidden romance” angle never feels icky or manipulative. It’s built on professionalism, trust, and choices made with integrity. They communicate like grown adults, but they also burn up the page. Yes, this book is spicy (it does NOT overshadow the plot). What stunned me most was that we don’t just hear about the biopic Neevah is starring in. Ryan actually gives us a look into Dessi Blue’s life. Her chapters, which are the script for the biopic, feel like a full historical novel folded into a contemporary romance and it is exquisite *chefs kiss*. It elevates the story into something that honors the artist that history tried to erase. This book became an unexpected education. The “name drops” (i.e. artists, musicians, cultural landmarks, historical figures) weren’t throwaway references. They were an act of preservation, a refusal to let Black excellence and Black suffering be forgotten. And I learned so much I NEVER learned in school. I learned more about Black culture and heritage in the U.S. and Europe. About the Harlem Renaissance’s unsung talents. About the cost of artistry during eras that tried to silence Black voices. I would absolutely DEVOUR a limited series based on this book, especially knowing that book two will center around Monk and Verity (the musician and screenwriter).

This story had range. From stage lights to real-life spotlight, Reel draws you into the lives of Canon and Neevah with intensity, tenderness, and so much soul. What begins with heartbreak unfolds into a deeply moving love story, one that doesn’t shy away from chronic illness, grief, emotional wounds, or healing. Neevah’s Lupus diagnosis is a major thread, not just a plot point, and it’s handled with care. Her resilience in the face of a demanding career and a shifting sense of self made her story all the more powerful. There’s an emotional gravity to this book, but it’s never overwhelming. The pacing is cinematic, fitting for a story about making a movie, and the drama always feels earned. There were moments that literally took my breath away. I appreciated the focus on therapy, vulnerability, legacy, and the urgency to live well and love fully. The audiobook was a beautiful experience, especially with the inclusion of original music that made the story feel alive. A strong 4 stars.

I couldn’t put it down. I read this in a day. I’m not sure what kept me from reading this before now but I’m so glad that I circled back to it. It’s an amazing romance story but there is so much more going on with these characters that leaves you longing for more. Kennedy Ryan is an amazing author and I can’t wait to read the next one. The only negative I have is that I hate reading the word “cock” for some reason but other than that, very well written.
