This is the perfect starter rod for my nephew. It is easy to feel the line load, so he can get his timing down. I didn't have a complaint with the line. It was a little coiled at first, but after a good stretching, it cast fine. I also casted it with a Rio Gold WF5F. The was slicker through the guides and loaded nicely with a heavier head weight. I purchased this combo in the 8 weight to fish locally for largemouth bass. Compared to the 5 weight combo I bought at a local box store, I’m very impressed! The Case: A royal blue canvas-like material surrounds The hard case. It looks handsome and feels very sturdy. I have no concerns about rod protection. The interior is sectioned off into four sleeves for each piece of the rod. The sleeves may not make a huge difference, but it seems like a thoughtful and higher end detail. The pieces don’t rattle around inside much when stored. The rod: The rod is great! A nice blue finish, and the pieces fit into each ferrule securely. There are small yellow dots at each point where the pieces connect which aid in putting the rod together without having to eyeball the line eyes with each other and the reel. The rod has a medium-fast action, so it feels slightly less flexible than my other rod which is a medium action. This slight increase in stiffness feels better to me; it feels more reactive to my arm motion than my other rod. My 8 weight has a slightly extended butt section covered in cork to help play large fish, too. The reel: Yep, the reel is essentially plastic. It feels heavy enough for plastic where I don’t feel worried about it breaking, but if it dropped too hard on some rocks, who knows? It might get damaged. If properly handled I don’t think there will be any issues. The drag is smooth, and it seats into the rod securely. I’m tempted to buy a 5 weight Clearwater combo from Redington to use instead of my other rod, I like it that much! ... show more

Likes: - comes ready to go - casts ok, I’m new to fly fishing so there is a learning curve for me also - has held up to the first few salmon, I’m using it for river run salmon. Kinda. . . Dislikes: - the line tangles itself horribly, every time I strip out some extra line it curls up and tangles on itself - the line does not have a loop end, so replacing the leader is pain. I have simply skipped changing out the leader and will be replacing the line with something better - the line going through the guides makes audible screeching noise. - the reel is not powerful enough for big fish. I’ve had grab the line by hand to land the salmon. Was hoping the 8wt would come with something strong enough. But then again this was only $99 for the whole kit. Overall it has been a good kit to learn fly fishing with. But wish the line and reel were better, I’ll be upgrading line for sure and either replacing the reel or getting a whole new kit for salmon. ... show more

Research says it’s 5wt Rio line.. very frayed & chafed upon unreeling on a linear run. Possibly a bad batch but it was rough to the touch and visibly abrasive. Going to contact the manufacturer if not I’ll be returning in five days. Rod itself is pretty nice action. The real is indeed a plastic… But the assembly isn’t all that bad, Feels flimsy but worth while catching some good sized fish so far. If RIO is reading… Reach out to me. ... show more
