  • Look like great quality

  • Traditional construction, artwork, that starts out good and gets better over time
Size: 13 Color: Sand Mohave
I think Red Wing shoes and boots may not be so widely known. The philosophy may not be understood. I used to think they were just expensive. I found out about them by way of an electrical contractor who always wore redwing boots. I thought he just had old boots until he explained the Red Wing reputation. He delighted in how they had become more and more comfortable over time and in their several years long life. I couldn’t realize the benefit from looking at the old boots at the time. When I saw these available, I was excited to try them myself. When they arrived, I couldn’t wait to open the box. Considering the cost of these, I expected to be surprised in someway. And I was, these Red Wing Classic Moc 8838 boots are outside my normal experience with footwear. I have owned plenty of work boots and hiking boots, but probably nothing constructed quite like these. My first surprise was how minimal the interior appeared. There was no lining or fancy interior appointments. There is no typical foam insole, and at first I wondered whether something had been left out or if part of buying these is getting my own insole. After looking into the matter, I found this is actually part of the traditional construction. Your foot rests on a fixed leather footbed with cork underneath it. As the boots are worn, the cork compresses and gradually conforms to the shape of the wearer’s feet. That is a very different philosophy from an ordinary shoe that feels soft because it contains a thick piece of foam. Foam cushioning can eventually flatten and wear out. These boots begin firmer and are intended to become more personally fitted and comfortable through use. The sizing worked well for me. I ordered my normal size and the boots seem to be sized accurately. After recently receiving another pair of boots that ran noticeably short, I especially appreciate that these appear to be honestly sized. Wearing medium thick socks, they are quite comfortable considering the expected break-in time. I can feel a seem on the side of each boot but after wearing them several hours, its not a problem and an area I think will improve and soften with time. Overall, I’m pleased and a little surprised how nicely the minimal looking interior feels. The thick sole provides a very sure feel. Its stiff and there is no twisting. I like stiff boots for construction sites and long days on concrete. Initially, I didn’t think about the stiffness of these while I was wearing them. It was only later when I grasped both ends of the boot to test its flexibility and found how stiff they are. Somehow Red Wing makes a stiff soul that isn’t noticeable every minute. Other boots with such a rigid feel don’t allow you to forget that you’re wearing such solid footwear. Something about the design with these is better in this department. The are stiffer and more supportive than they feel. The roughout leather is not just thin decorative suede. It has a unique texture compared to my other boots and feels thick and durable. The color is different as well and I like it very much. Leather like this is not damaged by wear and scratches, it gains character. The toe design tapers in such a way my feet don’t look as big and bulky with these heavier style boots. In new condition, I feel like they are high end and almost dressy. In reality the work boots style is more casual and rugged. They are waterproof, not by some special “membrane” that prohibits your feet from breathing but because the leather is completely and tightly enclosed all the way up the tongue behind the laces. Its nicely done leather work. These are made in the USA which is unusual and makes the boots very special. The “Goodyear welt construction” represents an uncommon benefit of these boots. The boots can be resoled without totally taking the whole boot apart. Hearing about how comfortable these boots become, I can imagine that putting a new sole on them might be more desirable than simply disposing of them like most shoes. They are expensive, but the quality is visible in the leather, stitching, welted construction and ability to be resoled. Most importantly, my pair fits properly. These may very well be the finest made boots I have owned. They are different than I expected and from everything else I have tried. There is a pride in wearing them, in understanding that the classic design is better. Instead of buying 2 or 3 pairs of disposable boots, I can see myself converting to boots that aren’t just boots but my pretty much custom fitted boots. A solid 5 star product! ... show more

  • Solid construction, but sizing runs large and break-in period is rough
Size: 11.5 Color: Sand Mohave
I received these Red Wing Heritage Classic Moc boots after wanting a durable, American made work boot for a while, and my first impressions are mixed. Starting with the good: the build quality is immediately apparent. The roughout waterproof leather feels substantial, the Goodyear welt construction looks clean and precise, and the Traction Tred wedge outsole seems like it will hold up well in wet or muddy conditions. These are clearly boots meant to last for years if taken care of properly. That said, straight out of the box these boots are stiff and honestly pretty uncomfortable to walk in. The leather has not softened up at all yet, and I found myself needing to take breaks after only short periods of wear. Based on the quality of the materials, I expect they will break in nicely over time and mold to my feet, but anyone ordering these should be prepared for an adjustment period rather than expecting all day comfort right away. Sizing is my biggest complaint. I normally wear an 11.5 in most boot and shoe brands, but these run noticeably large. I would recommend going down at least a full size, and possibly more depending on your foot width. If I could redo this order I would have gone with an 11 or even a 10.5. As for value, at a price point north of 300 dollars, I think these are overpriced for what you get, even accounting for the quality materials and craftsmanship. There are other work boot brands offering similar durability and waterproofing at a noticeably lower cost. I don't regret receiving them, since I do think they will last a long time once broken in, but I went in expecting a bit more immediate comfort given the price tag. Overall these are a solid pair of boots for someone willing to put in the break in time and who does not mind sizing down significantly, but I would only recommend them to buyers who already know Red Wing's sizing quirks or are willing to do careful research beforehand. ... show more

  • Everything about these boots lives up to the hype
Size: 10 Color: Sand Mohave
These Red Wing boots are such "if you know, you know" items. Honestly, until I held a pair, I didn't get it either. But once you get to wear a pair, it's easy to understand how they got their reputation. First, these boots scream quality leather from the get go. There is also a small inspection card inside the box, thanking you for choosing their product and assuring that they have personally checked to make sure everything about your boots is up to their standards. I usually wear a 10 in running shoes and I used Red Wing's own sizing tool to figure out the correct size. Their suggestion was a 10 as well and even though the common suggestion is to go half a size down with these boots, a 10 fits me perfectly well. I also kept reading there was supposed to be a break-in period but mine were comfortable from day one. These come with the Traction Tred outsole and I love the cream/white look. It looks like there is also a Vibram sole version which might be preferable if you need a more robust outsole, and better arch support. The only thing I wasn't super excited about is the eyelets. Instead of the metallic color, I'd have preferred something that matches the nice color of the roughout leather. But that's just preference. I expect these boots to last for years to come. Ultimately durability is the thing that makes these such great boots. Right now they look brand new, but I can't wait to see them broken-in after a year or so with that classic Red Wing look! ... show more

  • More durable and classic than comfortable. Perhaps most people wear these with insoles?
Size: 11 Color: Sand Mohave
These are very classic. They look and feel handmade and have that vintage, classic look you want in a sturdy work boot. They have decent traction on the bottom, with a bit of a thicker sole. The laces are rounded and classic as well, but are easy to replace if worn out. The leather will certainly long outlast the laces. I'm a little unsure about the fit on these. We've had one family member who wears an 11 who thinks they are way too big (fitting more like a 12), but another finding that just the toe box feels loose and open. They are about the right length for our size 11 foot, so we're not quite sure what to think. They have a classy, versatile look that you could wear for nice family photos, but they also feel like they could be the work solution for every day out in the yard or in the shop. The stitching is very well done and we see no defects of workmanship. Just trying to decide on fit and feel. These don't have much (if any) insole, so we are trying a few different custom insoles before we make final decisions on these. Overall, they are well made with beautiful, smooth and soft leather. For the feel, however, this seems like a pricey boot. We will definitely want to add a leather protective coating. ... show more

  • Classic heritage moc toe boot from one of the best
Size: 8.5 Color: Sand Mohave
Red Wing is known for amazing heritage boots, and this is definitely a classic that won't go out of style. The roughout leather moc toe boot with the traction tread sole is a classic from Red Wing, and it's easy to see why. The boots are great looking, with incredible craftsmanship. These are hand crafted in America, and is made to last. The goodyear welted soles are resolable, so you can send them in for repairs and extend the lifetime of these boots. The top of the boot is made out of thick roughout leather that is waterproof, with a rounded collar for comfort. The tongue is gusseted to keep water out, although that does limit the instep quite a bit. You'll definitely have to loosen a ton of lace to get in and out of these. The heel counter is very stiff to lock your feet in place, and the toebox is surprisingly roomy. If you've never tried a Red Wing boot, you should definitely size down half size from your brannock size. They definitely run big. The boots will take time to break in and will be very stiff and uncomfortable for the first few wears, but if you keep at it, you'll own some of the most comfortable, durable boots you can find on the market. This is a boot made to last for years and years, and I can only see it getting better with age. This has my highest recommendation. ... show more

  • Very Hard and uncomfortable at First
Size: 11.5 Color: Sand Mohave
These are my first ever pair of Red Wing boots and I'm giving a 4 ⭐ based on the build quality because they are uncomfortable unless I put a shoe insert inside. So the big thing with Red wing shoes I guess is people figuring out the right size. I normally wear a 12 in athletic shoes, and 12 or 11 1/2 in boots depending on brand. These 11 1/2 fit me in length. The total length of the bottom sole is 13". From the end of toe to heal on the outside is about 12 1/2". My foot measures exactly 11 1/4". When I put my foot inside the boot it feels like I got about 3/4" of room at the end which I like. I have slender feet so the Width is big on me. Compared to my other boots these are made better - the sole is attached firmly (this is important as I have had 2 pairs of boots where the sole completely detached from my boot in a matter of less than a month. I wear boots everyday for work but I think I will just wear these for non work use as I don't want to mess them up. The boot is triple stitched, quality leather, and the craftsmanship is much better than anything I have considered using for work. Now the leather isn't as nice as my Italian made boots but these are 3x less the price point too. I really like the classic moc design and I'm hoping that after a wear in period these will be comfortable as the inside of the boot and leather are very hard. ... show more

  • wide enough, look great
Size: 11 Color: Sand Mohave
I like Red Wing boots, but my 10.5 4E feet limit my options. I tried the size 11 and I was startled that I did not need to use my boot stretchers. I may have gotten by with the 10.5 and the width and toe box are just large enough for my wide feet. The leather, soles, and construction are top notch - typical of Red Wing boots. The leather has suede finish and is a little softer so the break in period is less than usual. The leather insole still needs to conform to my feet though - there's no short cut for that. The sole is flexible enough and should break in within a week of use. My only nit pik is the shoe laces are just barely long enough to tie a single knot; this may be because of my wide feet. The price seems high, but it's reasonable for a high quality and well made pair of waterproof leather boots with the high end leather, Goodyear welting, and sole/insole materials. And I really like the appearance. This is my third pair of Red Wing shoes/boots. ... show more
