The Chapman sisters have stated repeatedly in videos that there are no "rules" for this sponge; just do what works for you. Bounce the makeup in for fuller coverage; gently sweep it on for lighter coverage. Use whichever side gives you the results you like. I don't use this sponge very often for foundation. My skin type and texture lends better to bare finger or brush application. However, when I do use this sponge for foundation, I dampen it first for smoother application and to keep from wasting product, and I find that I need to squeeze hard with a towel to get every excess drop of water out or the sponge becomes squishy and limp and dilutes my makeup. Also for foundation I prefer using the big round side, not the flat side. I do use the sponge every day for concealer. I use the pointy end, sometimes damp, sometimes dry. No real preference there. I don't love this sponge for finishing powder, but it's nice for highlight and I imagine it would work well with a heavier powder (mineral) foundation. I haven't used any other rounded sponges and therefore can't make any brand comparisons. This one works well enough and comes at a price so low that I see no need to try others. I’ve tried plenty of makeup sponges, but I keep coming back to the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, and for good reason. It blends liquid foundation and cream products effortlessly, whether I’m doing a quick everyday look or something more polished. The flat edge is perfect for pressing product into the skin, and the rounded sides give a seamless finish with minimal effort. The pointed tip is surprisingly effective at getting around the nose and under the eyes. I use it damp, and it gives my makeup a soft, skin-like finish, never streaky or cakey. It’s firm enough for control but still soft on the skin. I appreciate that it’s latex-free and cruelty-free, and the two-pack is convenient so I always have a clean one ready. It’s easy to clean, but like any sponge, it starts to break down after several weeks. Replacing it monthly, as recommended, feels reasonable, especially given the price point.
