A duct drawing is a map of where the air goes. It shows a unit, the ducts that leave it, the branches that come off those ducts, and the outlets where the air enters the rooms. Everything else on the sheet is a note about one of those four things: how big a duct is, how much air it carries, where a damper sits, or which zone a run belongs to. This workbook teaches the reading of that map, and the arithmetic that tells you whether what you are reading holds together. WHAT IS INSIDE Part 1: what a duct plan shows. The four things on every plan, plan against section and riser, line types, the sheet and the title block, the marks that point somewhere else (section callouts, continuation marks, revision clouds), scale, following a run from end to end, the legend and general notes, reading a riser diagram, and what a drawing does not tell you. Part 2: the symbols. Supply, return and exhaust; diffusers, registers and grilles; the four dampers; fittings; a VAV box in a branch; how a duct size is written; reading a return and exhaust layout; insulation, lining and flexible duct; fire dampers and compartment lines, with a note on smoke and combination dampers; tags, schedules and notes. Part 3: twenty-eight reading drills, five items each, in order. Part 4: twenty practice diagrams, one to a page, six questions on each. Part 7: six worked drawings, each a reading that goes wrong in a way that is easy to miss. Part 8: complete answer keys. Every drill, every diagram question with its working, every exercise, and every review question. Part 9: reference. Symbol chart, abbreviations, air path and balance terms, formulas, duct size tables, troubleshooting, a coordination checklist, a do-not-infer checklist, and a glossary. No prior study is assumed and no equipment is needed. The buildings, units, and airflows are invented for teaching, so every figure a question asks about is printed on the page. WHAT THIS BOOK IS NOT This is a reading and arithmetic workbook, not a design manual. Load calculation, equipment selection, refrigeration, controls wiring, and commissioning are outside it. It can show that a drawing is arithmetically consistent; it cannot show that a system is correctly designed.
