  • Excellent hardware, but insane to setup and follow
The hardware is real metal, and legit. The arm part was pre-assembled. Note that the main metal body is newer than the instructions, but still works, just accept the oval slots as the circle slots in the instructions. The video instructions help too, but just know there's several things missing regardless what instructions you follow, so familiarity with electronics will be pretty helpful, and ignoring the Chinese. You will critically need the links in the Q&A section. The instructions are terrible, but with a little familiarity with electronics, you can follow the partially complete and hardly labeled instructions. You will need to have their Raspbian image written to a microSD card you provide, and insert that into the Raspberry Pi 4 that you also provide. If you are familiar with Raspberry Pi and Linux great, if not, you'll need to Google how to make a bootable flash drive with Raspbian which is the same for the MicroSD. If you're on Windows, you'll find you need to set the Raspbian OS to English (after booting from the robot's hotspot) navigating the Partial Chinese menus (use Google to help you if needed). It is CRITICAL also that you set the encoding in that same section to UTF-8 or the python3 scripts you'll use later will fail. When your robot is turned on, wait up to 5 minutes for it to boot the Raspberry Pi and its OS. You'll hear a beep, then you should see the Wi-Fi hotspot it creates that starts with "HW-" on your laptop. You'll use the software they include on the Google Drive download to install the Windows software (which has a VM for accessing the robot's Raspbian OS and terminal for the Python3 scripts). Lastly, make sure you know VIM or Nano to do the script editing as you can't use the Internet to download another code editor. The deviation and calibration program worked well. The first forward script did not work properly, but further reading in the tutorial tells you what the arguments are for so you can correct it yourself in the code. So basically, you should know electronics, Linux, tech stuff like making bootable disks, have a Raspberry Pi 4, 16 GB MicroSD card, two of those Lithium ion batteries (this comes with a generic charger), know how to code in VIM or Nano using the Python3 coding language (though they try to help you navigate simply), know at least one coding language, read this review, and then... You can help your son use it like I did, after he and I went through the chaos of figuring out all the issues and missing info, haha. 🤪 Over all, really cool. Just really complicated to get going. P.S. Haven't tried a mobile app, but apparently that has to be installed a non-conventional way, and that I'm not a fan of. They do make an Android app that supports two other robots, but not this one. Maybe the iOS version is good. ... show more

  • It works….instructions are horrible.
Got it working. As previously said the instructions are horrible. Here are some tips to help out if you haven’t used a raspberry pie before. Download the raspberry pi imager Download the MasterPi20220528.img file from the Amazon Q&A google drive link. Use the raspberry pi imager to load the image on the SD card using your PC. Select use custom. Select MasterPi20220528.img Put the micro SD card in the raspberry pi. Do this before putting the arm on the robot. You can boot the pi with a HDMI monitor and usb keyboard if you have the cable if VNC does work per the instructions. Set system to English using preferences\configuration\localization After that most the software instructions are ok. The pdf for the mechanical build is out of order. You must watch the videos. I recommend getting the initial software setup working before the mechanical build. Good luck ... show more

  • Very impressive hardware quality. A robotic platform and AI for basic and advanced users.
I'm a Ph.D. AI engineer and I wanted a platform to teach my 6 years old how to code in python and use Tensorflow in robotic-themed hands-on activities. I ordered the one without the RPI4, and bought that separately. I had a RPI3 but it didn't work with higwonder libraries. I requested the os image and the software and the support team provided it in less than 12 hours., Impressive! You can find my question with the reply from support on Amazon Q&A that provided links to the image drive. The robot worked right after I set up the pi image and my son started playing with it right away. I tried to connect via VNC thinking it won't work and to my surprise, I was writing a python code on the platform in a few minutes. Do not expect the typical low-quality Chinese stuff with this robot. I myself cannot build a software and a platform that's easier than this. The platform is impressive and their support is outstanding too. The software is really great and for this price, I cannot recommend it more to any person wanting to start in robotics. My next move after integrating Tensorflow and adding AI capabilities is to add a Lidar and install ROS on it. I will update on how it goes. ... show more
