  • Very Pleased!!
Style: Root Slayer
Radius Garden Root Slayer Shovel - 2017 Green Thumb Award for Most Innovative Garden Tool I have been gardening for over 40 years and I have used most garden tools at one time or another. Occasionally a new innovative garden tool becomes available to gardeners, which is the case with the Radius Garden Root Slayer Shovel. It won the 2017 Green Thumb Award for Most Innovative Garden Tool, and rightfully so. This tool is well designed, very well made and does an excellent job of doing what it was designed to do, "slay roots." Well Designed: The Root Slayer was designed to be several tools in one. It's shape is part Drain Spade, part Digging Shovel, part Spade, and part Saw. The real beauty of the Root Slayer is the saw-toothed edges along the sides of the blade. The saw-toothed edges do indeed slay the roots of weeds, shrubs, trees, etc. These saw teeth are very sharp and saw right through any roots that are present when you are digging. This turns a difficult chore into a much easier task. The handle is circular in shape, which allows one's hands to grasp it from various angles. This will help prevent one's hands and wrists from becoming stressed from constantly being used at the same angle. The tip of the Root Slayer is very sharp, which is nice because every gardener knows that a sharp tipped digging tool works far better than a dull tipped garden tool. Well Constructed: The Root Slayer is very well made. The blade is heavy duty, rather than the flimsy construction of a lot of garden tools. The handle and shafts are also solid and heavy duty. As such, even a professional gardener can expect this tool to last for many years. The saw teeth along the edges are coarse-toothed, as opposed to fine-toothed. This coarse design prevents the teeth from getting clogged up by dirt, roots, etc. The ferrule (the place where the blade attaches to the shaft) is longer than most garden tools, definitely made for longevity. My Experience: When I received the Root Slayer, I put it to a rather thorough "field test". I quickly found out that it did a good job of doing what it was designed to do, "slay roots". I was impressed with how easily this tool sliced through most of the ever present roots of the nearby weeds, trees & shrubs. It sliced through the smaller roots with just one thrust of the tool. I used a sawing motion to slice through some of the larger roots, and the saw-toothed edges of the blade cut through these roots nicely. It also does a good job of digging, just like a spade or shovel. Recommendation: I am very pleased with this tool, and I highly recommend it for anyone who gardens; even a professional gardener will find the Root Slayer to be a nice and handy tool to have in their inventory of garden tools. As I mentioned earlier, "This tool is well designed, very well made and does an excellent job of doing what it was designed to do, 'slay roots'. " Happy Gardening to all! ... show more

  • Excellent shovel for stubborn people who don't want to hire someone!
Style: Root Slayer
I bought the Root Slayer to try to dig up the roots of a 50+ year old privet hedge that I had cut down. I was able to dig up some pretty big root balls pretty quickly... probably bigger than the shovel is actually intended for! It is strenuous work, but I think I would have had to hire someone or rent a grinder otherwise. The shovel is easy to use, built very strong, and well-designed. I'm pretty strong, but roots of the hedge were very developed. My technique involved digging out around a portion, and then working the shovel under it at an angle and prying it up. I really like the design - the footstep is sturdy and wide enough that you can hop up on it comfortably to use your body weight, but you can also kick it to get it in deeper when it's at an angle. The serration and the cutting edge really do the work. I know it's probably not the right way to go about it, but once I had the shovel under the root ball, I hopped up onto the handle to use my body weight to pry it out. From this, I can tell you that the shovel is very durable and the handle can support the weight of an adult woman. Good stuff, very happy with this tool! ... show more

  • Great tool- Every gardener must have!
Style: Root Slayer XL
Great spade. I had a rock and dirt pile I inherited from the previous owner. My traditional spade could not navigate this pile, but the Radius Gardener did. I used it to unearth cobblestones that we buried underneath grass. This tool work marvelously. It also is the tool of choice when breaking fallow soil grass and weeds. This tool is a must for breaking new soils for garden. ... show more
