Description

North American gardeners & landscapers love round point shovels. This one has a larger blade than most, as well as a slightly cupped shape. Old-timers might recognize this as close to what was once called a "sand shovel." Nowadays that term is pretty much reserved for children's toys, but we can assure you that this is no toy. The shape of the blade is indeed quite useful when working in sand & sandy soils. The real beauty of this shovel is that it works well in all conditions, can be used all day long by professionals, & won't break like most cheap transfer shovels today.

  • Best gardening tool ever!
Style: Weeder
This is the most expensive shovel I've ever bought, but I would absolutely buy it again. It's very strong. I've used it for weeding, digging in hard clay, and prying rocks up without bending the scoop or handle. I used it as a prybar to move a small boulder. It's also great for planting bulbs or setting out small plants. Love it! ... show more

  • Excellent Garden Fork!
Bought Radius Garden Fork to replace a popular "claw" type tool for working the soil in my raised beds. I needed something a little more substantial that would break up & work the soil deeper than the top 6". I saw a YouTube video with a couple tilling their raised beds using the Radius Garden Fork with what seemed like very little effort. Oh, I was green with envy and decided I really needed something like this! I read all the reviews of similar tools and made trips to big box garden/home stores as well as a few smaller speciality stores to see if I could find a good fork that would stand up to the work I do around here. The main issue I have experienced with garden tools is they either have a plastic handle that eventually breaks or the wood or fiberglass handle is low quality and eventually cracks. All the garden forks I found in the stores had flimsy plastic handles or cheaply made handles or the tines were just too flimsy. The Radius Garden Digging Fork had good reviews but I was unable to find one in any of the garden stores I visited so I held my breath and ordered from Amazon. The Fork arrived 2 days later in a huge box with minimal packaging. Just a little plastic sleeve to keep it from being scratched. It's lightweight but not flimsy at all, the right height for me (5'3") or my 6' tall husband to use comfortably, and is very well made. Square tines and a nice feeling handle. It has the overall feeling of a good, solid piece of equipment. The first test was breaking up the compacted, clay loam full of dead cover crop we added to a 10'x10' bed last year. We'd already used the claw type tool to break up and amend 2 other beds the same size and it took roughly 3 hours for each. We did the next bed with the Radius Fork in half that time with less effort than the claw type tool and was able to loosen the soil up a foot down! That was breaking the soil up, adding compost, working the soil to mix compost & break up clumps then turning dead leaves into the soil. We even went back over the previous two beds with the fork to loosen the soil up a little deeper. The Radius Fork worked like a dream! I think this will be great for breaking up soil for new in ground beds too. A little more effort than using a motorized tiller but it will be more precise and with less mess spread around. ... show more

  • Sturdy Shovel. The Best I've Ever USed
Style: Round Point Shovel
This is a great, shovel and easy to operate. I had a Radius Garden transplanting shovel that I bought 15 or 16 years ago that I used extensively year after year- very often and for very difficult digging at times. I never really thought about what brand that shovel was, only that I loved it. This spring while digging a big hole in some rocky, rooty dirt, I snapped the blade off at the base. I was devastated at the loss of my favorite shovel. After eventually figuring out the brand and model of that shovel, my wife found out that Radius Garden offers a lifetime guarantee on their shovels. I wrote to Radius Garden and explained and documented the situation. Within a week I had a replacement transplant shovel in my hands. That was very admirable on their part so I started checking out other Radius Garden products. That's what led me to this great shovel and also to an edger and a smaller garden shovel, not to mention a set of ergonomic garden hand tools. For the shovels, I recommend paying the premium for the stainless steel PRO line. They are well made and can survive without worrying about cleaning them off after every use. ... show more

  • Good tool for appropriate use
Style: Spade
I bought this tool on the recommendation of someone who digs trenches for bamboo barriers. That was my purpose for purchasing the tool. My regular garden shovel with a long handle goes through easy soil much faster, but on the other hand, it's shallower. I also can't use it for any sort of leveraging without risking bending the shovel blade or breaking the handle. So this has been my procedure. I dug the perimeter where I intended to put in the bamboo barrier with the garden shovel. The shovel easily sliced through the grass and picked up the top foot or so of soil. I don't have many rocks to speak of, so this worked fairly well. The bamboo barrier needs to be buried 2 feet down, though, which was a bit much for the shovel. Conveniently, the garden shovel is wider than this spade, so by digging with the shovel first, that provides sideways movement along the trench to move the spade back and forth to penetrate the soil. I did sharpen the blade, and that made a big difference. It's easy enough to sharpen it with a good file. I'm probably going to also file some teeth into the leading edge. My biggest obstacle is roots from the neighbor's pecan trees. There are roots anywhere from 1/4 inch to 3 inches in diameter going through where the trench needs to be. I can dispatch those roots with this spade, but I can't with my garden shovel. So between the shovel getting down the first foot, and the spade going down the second foot, I'm making good progress with the trench. One comment about weight -- this tool has some heft to it. Don't purchase it thinking you'll be getting a lightweight tool. This is a pretty heavy duty tool. Use the weight to your advantage. Without that extra weight, I would not be able to sever those large tree roots. I tried with my garden shovel and failed. Well, I would have succeeded with some persistence, but this spade cuts through them with relative easy, partly because of the heft. After heavily using the spade for a few days, it is creaking now. It shows no signs of fatigue. The creaking comes from the interface between the metal and plastic components of the handle. Update: Well, apparently, the creaking was, in fact, a sign of fatigue. Since my last edit, the "unbreakable" shaft broke. I've taken some pictures to illustrate the problem, but I can't find a way to add pictures to my review here, so I've uploaded them to [...] To understand what you're seeing, you need to know that the end of the handle is inserted during assembly into the hollow shank of the scoop. The shaft of the handle is also hollow. Furthermore, its end has been cut lengthwise in order for it to be bent to accommodate the angle of the shank. The shaft slides into the shank, a snug fit being accomplished using an o-ring that is apparently made of polyethylene. When digging, if you use leverage to move the dirt, you put a lot of force on the o-ring as well as on the cut part of the shaft. In my case, both parts of the cut end of the shaft broke off, approximately at the place where the pin goes through the shaft to hold the two main pieces together. I explained my situation to amazon.com, and they sent out a replacement, free of charge, paying for shipping if the replacement as well as return shipping for the broken spade. I still think this is a very good spade. But don't believe the label on the shaft that says unbreakable. I believed it, and broke it. You can still do some heavy work with it, but don't put your full strength into leveraging the tool. ... show more
