  • Poor runout? Are you inserting the collet into the nut correctly?
Like many others have reported, the R8 collet holder that came with this set had a lot of runout - about 0.11mm (or ~4 thou) worth, in fact - and I saw this across multiple collet sizes when checked with gage pins and a Mitutouyo 0.01mm dial test indicator. The runout on the inside bore of the collet holder was about 0.01 mm (or ~4 tenths) - which is the same as the inside bore of my R8 spindle - so that wasn't the culprit. Looking inside the collet nut I was alarmed to see an eccentric ledge that sure seemed like a massive machining mistake, but the exact same ledge was on another collet nut I purchased from a different supplier. Not knowing any better, I assumed that the same factory made both collet nuts so I proceeded to bore out the eccentric ledge on both of them in the lathe and that seemed to fix the problem - as the runout dropped down to 0.01mm. Well, it turns out I was a clueless idiot that didn't know that the collet nut is supposed to have an eccentric ledge in it, and that the groove near the wide end of the collet is supposed to snap into said ledge. When I tried snapping a 3/4 collet and gage pin into a high quality ball bearing collet nut I then measured about 0.02mm of TIR, which is reasonably good, all things considered. So, moral of the story: make sure you are snapping the collet into the nut first, then insert the tool/work into the collet, then insert all of this into the collet holder and crank the bejeezus out of the nut (IIRC, the recommended torque is something like 130 ft-lbs for an ER32 collet). For example, hand-tightening the ball bearing collet nut resulted in a TIR of 0.05mm; tightening another 1/8th of a turn with the cheap collet wrench dropped that down to 0.03mm, and giving it one last college try dropped it again to 0.02mm. Could I do even better? Not with the short spanner wrench that comes with these sets by default, but maybe with a longer, multi-pronged spanner. ... show more

The finish looks great but I didn't pay attention and got this r8 when I needed a mt2. I got the mt2 version of this and it works great

  • Where’s the case?
Seems okay and should work, but the storage case shown didn’t come with the parts. The collets are small and difficult to keep track of , being loose. Everything was just wrapped in cardboard and taped up.

  • Very bad runout
My mill spindle has 0.0005" runout. with an R8 1/2" collet and end mill my run out is 0.001". Installed the R8-ER32 adapter runout was 0.003", added the 1/2 ER32 collet and an endmill and the runout measured 0.005". I sent it back.
