I've had plenty of cats and kittens on Purina Pro Plan Liveclear dry food. I've noticed that the adults and kittens love the kitten food more than the adult but it's also higher in calories and fats so adult cats really shouldn't be eating kitten food for an extended length of time unless your adult female is pregnant and/or nursing or if your veterinarian advises you to do so. Purina has many different dry food options including many different Purina Pro Plan sub-types and many of them are not of the same quality as others. Purina Pro Plan LiveClear is their highest grade dry good available with a veterinarian's prescription. It IS also the most expensive but because it's the only dry food I've ever found that ALL of my cats like, I'm willing to pay a little extra so that I don't have to get numerous different types of food for different cats. The LiveClear's claim to lower your cat's allergens is fairly new. I started seeing it within the last few years or so. Before that, they had the same food but it didn't have that claim. I've been using this food for 8 years and haven't ever had a cat that didn't like it. As far as the lower allergen claim goes, I don't notice a difference. It's hard to tell since my boyfriend has a pollen and grass allergy as well as a cat allergy so I don't know if we'd notice if there was a difference in the amount of allergens released in their saliva and dander. This Particular line of Purina's comes in a variety of flavor options. For the most part I get them the Chicken and Rice but I've also tried the Salmon and they seemed to be just as happy. I DID notice a difference in the size of the round pieces of dry food when comparing the chicken and salmon. The Chicken and Rice Adult dry food has round thicker pieces and the salmon flavor is round and almost flat. The size and weight of the bags are the same but the individual pieces are slightly different. I suppose it's possible that Purina is in the process of changing the size of all of the LiveClear food pieces and one of the bags I got was with their new size and the other bag was with their previous size. Both bags were fresh. If your cat has health problems that cause him/her to need dry food that s geared towards Kidney problems, urinary tract, sensitive stomach, etc. Purina Pro Plan also makes dry food for such health issues and they also have prescription food for specific health issues which you can ask your Veterinarian about. ... show more

Only digests the most common cat allergen. Thankfully, everyone in my house is only allergic to the common allergen, not the rare allergen (which this food does not protect against). Started my cat on this food, immediately noticed a reduction in our allergy symptoms. When we ran out of this food for a while, our allergies returned so it definetely works. If you are unfortunately allergic to the rare cat allergen, this food might not help as much. But for us it’s 100% effective. And obviously it’s tasty because our cat loves it. ... show more

My cats really love this food and eat it very well. The chicken formula has become another favorite in our home. One of the main reasons I chose LiveClear was its allergen-reducing benefit. This helped with allergies SO much. You will likely have to take some nasal spray occasionally, and we didn’t find that it was as if there was no cat, but it does make a huge difference. My cat loves the food and hasn’t gotten sick from it the way he does with some others. Worth the cost!

My two cats has no problem switching over to purina from hills science diet. I made the switch because of my allergies becoming significantly worse. I do believe this is helping with my allergies - however I also have multiple air purifies around my home and take an ungodly amount of allergy medicine, so I can not be 100% sure on how much the food is helping. My one cat tends to have a sensitive stomach - she has not had any digestive problems since starting this a few months ago. I have noticed that both cats have had softer and shinier coats. So even if this has not helped with allergies I plan to keep the cats on this food. ... show more

    • A Miracle for Our Allergic Family — But Please Improve the Formula

My children and I love cats, but unfortunately, we are all severely allergic to them. Exposure to cats can trigger asthma and other serious allergy symptoms for us. XM is our rescue cat, and she has become a beloved member of our family. Thanks to Purina Pro Plan LiveClear, we are able to live with her without the serious allergy problems we would otherwise experience. LiveClear truly works for us. I don't use the word lightly when I say that, for our family, it has been almost a miracle. That is why I am giving LiveClear four stars. For its allergen-reducing effectiveness, I would give it five stars without hesitation. However, because of my concerns about the formula, I would otherwise give it three stars. Four stars is my compromise between how grateful I am for what this food does and how much I wish the ingredients could be improved. My concern is especially important to me because LiveClear is not just an occasional food for XM. Purina recommends feeding LiveClear every day for optimal allergen-reducing benefit and keeping it as the cat's primary diet. For families with severe cat allergies like ours, that means our cats may need to depend on this food every day for many years — potentially for the rest of their lives. That makes me pay very close attention to what XM is eating. I wish the formula relied less on ingredients such as corn protein meal, wheat flour, and soy protein concentrate. At 494 calories per cup, it is also quite calorie-dense, something I have to pay attention to with XM, who is a small, 100% indoor cat. I understand that LiveClear is formulated as a complete and balanced cat food, and I am not claiming that these ingredients make it unsafe or nutritionally inadequate. My concern is simply that when a cat may need to eat one particular food every day for life, I would like the formula to be as thoughtfully designed for long-term feline nutrition as the remarkable allergen-reducing technology behind it. At the moment, families like ours have very little choice. We depend on LiveClear's allergen-reducing effect so that we can comfortably live with the cat we love. I am enormously grateful to Purina for developing this technology — it has made a real difference in our lives. But I sincerely hope Purina will continue improving the formula and give as much consideration to the long-term nutritional quality of the food as it has to its allergen-reducing effectiveness. If another company someday offered the same allergen-reducing benefit with a formula that addressed these concerns, I would absolutely consider switching. LiveClear has given our family something precious: the ability to keep and love our rescue cat despite our allergies.     • Worth the investment for those with allergies

I have always had mild cat allergies (scratchy throat, watery eyes) but my now-husband came as a package deal with two lovely indoor cats. The first couple months after the cats moved in, especially in the summer, were absolute hell despite keeping them out of the bedroom and cleaning excessively. This food immediately (within a week) reduced the amount of dander that was agitating my allergies. Yes, it's more expensive than the average cat food, but for us it's well worth it. Both cats love it, there is no noticeable smell, the nutrition facts are excellent, and the serving size is less than the cheap food which makes the price more palatable. No issues with longevity. We always order the big bag to minimize the price per ounce and keep the extra in a sealed container, which seems to keep it fresh until the bag is finished. Purina, please keep making this line of food! It's been a lifesaver for us. As an additional tip, installing a couple of floor-mounted air purifiers in the cats' room with easy to clean filters, actually removing the hair from the filter regularly, and weekly detailed vacuuming/wet mopping has helped tremendously with my allergies in conjunction with this food. when we got our cat from the shelter and brought her home 4 years ago we never expected that my daughter and husband were allergic. we were devastated. we thought we would have to take the cat back. my daughter was miserable with allergies. I thought I would give this a shot. we have been feeding her this food (first the kitten kind then adult) for 4 years now and my daughter is doing great. no more cat allergies. my husband still wakes up stuffy sometimes so we got an air purifier and that helps too. the food is unfortunately very expensive but it has actually worked for us so we will continue using it forever so we can keep our cat. ... show more
