  • Terrible instructions...good luck getting it to work!
3 days in and I'm still trying to get clear instructions on how to use this. The instructions that are provided and the instructions on the website are terrible. There are TWO banks of switches but yet instructions don't tell you what bank of switches to use and they didn't even label the back of the box with "bank a" or "bank b" to make it easier to set it up. Ugggh. ... show more

  • Sounds Great and Has Immense Value for the Money
This has to be the absolute best phono preamp I have heard for under $200. The dip switch settings underneath really make this worthwhile so that you can have some leeway in fine tuning the sound to your specific cartridge. Very clean sound. IMHO, this is a much better piece of equipment than the Schiit Mani which sells for a little bit less but this is worth the extra money by a lot. Pro-Ject makes a lot of really cool stuff and I'm glad they are around. I have enjoyed everything I've ever bought from them. ... show more

  • Better Sounding Vinyl
I’m recently getting back into vinyl after a 30 year hiatus. I picked up a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo last November and have really been enjoying it. My current setup consists of the Evo, a Yamaha a-s301 and Klipsh rp160m. As I’m building up my vinyl collection some records sounded better than others. This is to be expected, but even the better sounding ones were not great from a separation and fidelity perspective. I started thinking maybe the amp wasn’t well suited to vinyl playback or that I had just become to used to digital. I stream YouTube Music and listen to FLAC via a Raspberry Pi with a Hifiberry Digi+ Pro HAT running MoOde Audio into the coaxial of the a-s301. It sounds great. Back to the vinyl. As I started researching new amps I learned about external phono preamps. Prices ranged from $25 - $2500 and more. I decided to see what was available in the $200 and under range and picked up the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2. It was at the limit of my budget, but I figured it should pair well with the Evo and the reviews I could find were all positive. Suffice it to say, I’m no longer in the market for a new amp (for now). The S2 has been a game changer. It’s really quiet. Records that had previously been unlistenable due to the pops and cracks now sound good. The records that already sounded good are phenomenal. There is better bass, separation and dynamic range. It’s the vinyl sound I was craving. If you’re using the built in phono stage on a lower end amp or turntable, get a quality external unit. I’m thinking the $100 - $200 range will be a noticeable improvement for most. A couple of Records that sound awesome are: • Bob Marley: Rastaman Vibration • Art Blakey: Roots and Herbs • Fania All Stars: Live at Yankee Stadium • Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings: Soul Time ... show more

  • Great phono preamp
Love this, especially the fact that I can modify the capacitance. I bought some LC-1 Blue Jean cables here, very low capacitance. I only had a modified Cambridge 640p in which I removed the 220 capacitors for an Audio Technica cartridge to lower the capacitance down to AT's liking - but needed a bit higher for my Ortofon 520 cartridge. I only have a MMF 5.1 turntable, so I didn't want to spend as much or more on a phono preamp. This fit the bill perfectly and I can say it outperforms its price range - at least I think so. ... show more

  • I wanted to like it, but it clearly had something wrong.
I purchased the Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 mainly based on Amazon and other online reviews. The unit I received was clearly not working as there was a pronounced boosted noise floor right out of the box, at first I thought that the settings may be wrong for my MM cartridge, but confirmed that they were correct. The noise it added to the signal made it absolutely useless. I decided to purchase a phono pre-amp directly from Schiit since they guaranteed that it would be tested and couldn't be happier with the results. When I'm ready to upgrade I'll likely look at another product from Schiit. ... show more

  • Nice Sound, No Space Complications
This is the first stand-alone phono preamplifier I have used or purchased. I like the size and customizability of this little unit. It contributes to a nice, clean soundstage that’s the result of a recent turntable and cartridge upgrade to my system.

  • Great Sound For A Great Price!
I replaced my standard Pro-ject Phono Box with the S2 version and wow! It made a nice difference in detail, imaging and bass slam. Being able to dial in the right specifications on the bottom for whatever cartridge you have really helped bring my Sumiko Pearl cartridge to life. Highly recommended.

  • Incredible value and sound for the price.
Absolutely incredible sound for the price point. I cannot recommend this preamp enough. The subsonic filter is a great feature as well.
