This is probably the sixth shelving unit I have received from this company. All of them have worked quite well. This one appears to be a new model with some modifications over the previous ones that I have used so I will go over some of the key differences, pros, and cons. Overall, this is a great shelving unit and it really does the job and for a very reasonable price. The legs now are a sort of rolled steel, which hides the key holes and makes it look sharper. It also seems to be more sturdy and rigid than other models where the legs are single layer. The new yellow shelf supports make it easier to see the keyholes for proper placement. The supports in the middle of the shelf now snap in with a tab system, which is much easier than the nut and bolt system that they had previously. The feet (floor protectors) now fit inside the rolled steel of the legs instead of the rubber sleeve that used to go over the top. The rubber sleeve was a snug fit, but also interfered with the shelf placement if you were setting it at the top level. The inside-mounted plastic footing works, but it feels like it might pop out if you were to move the unit. I moved the unit around my basement and they stayed in, though. The legs now have a coupling bracket that connects the two to make it taller instead of just the tab-keyhole approach in other units. That means all eight legs are the same instead of four of one kind and four of another. It also makes it very easy to extend this to its full height (1 tall shelf) or to half height (2 shorter shelves). It is very modular. The instructions are much better this time around with multiple steps and illustrations. Previously, the instructions were I think just one picture and a link to a video. They also have the video link but this time it’s not as necessary. The steps are very easy to follow. The unit comes with gloves and a rubber mallet to help protect the unit while assembling. Most of the pieces slide together easily, but you may need to pound in a few areas just to make sure that it is completely secure. The new snap buttons for connecting the coupler are a little stiff to get in and require a little more hand strength than I would have expected. But I guess that’s where the mallet can help you. They still fit very nice, but it might be a little harder to change your mind if you wanna take these apart again as opposed to using the sliding keyhole system that is used in the other ones. The inserts and the buttons are only plastic so it’s not quite as strong as their other units which use the keyhole fitting which provide a secure, all steel connection. One nice thing about the coupling brackets is that you no longer eat up to keyholes trying to connect all of the legs together, which allows you to have a little more flexibility with where you space the shelves. 5 stars! Sturdy Shelving, but Quality Control Issues I ordered 3 of these shelves and overall, I'm mostly happy with the purchase—but there are some important caveats. Pros: Assembly was straightforward and easy to do solo. Once assembled, the shelves are very sturdy. They hold the advertised weight with no issues. One of mine is set up in the half-shelf/table configuration and is currently supporting a 600+ pound toolbox without any signs of strain. Cons: One out of the three shelves arrived damaged—not from shipping, but clearly from the factory. The paint was applied after the damage occurred, so it was obviously packed like that. I had to do quite a bit of bending and adjusting to make it usable at all. Even then, one of the five tiers was so badly bent that it was completely unusable. I used the damaged shelf for the half-height table configuration, which only requires four tiers. That workaround wouldn't have been possible if I needed all five tiers. The shelf surfaces themselves are made from lightweight pressboard, which isn’t the most durable, though they’re fine as long as you’re not expecting industrial-strength decking. Bottom Line: These shelves are strong, easy to put together, and a good value—if you get undamaged parts. I’m docking two stars due to the factory-quality issue and unusable components. If you absolutely need every part to be functional out of the box, this might be a risk. Update: where quality control fell short, customer support made up for it. I was sent a new undamaged shelf.     • Difficult directions but nice shelves

I like the size of the shelves and the ability to choose the hight of each of the shelves. They seem to be fairly sturdy. The assembly took much longer than expected not due to them being very difficult but the directions not being very clear. The first time or two I had the sides upside down which doesn’t hold the board up for the shelf correctly.. I had to take it apart to put them back together correctly. I would give 5 stars if the directions were better, bigger and had actual words to tell you how to put it together. There is just pictures and hard to tell exactly which pieces go where so you pretty much have to figure it out yourself. Once you get it down though it is fairly easy to put together. ... show more

I bought this to store 4 5-gallon gas cans in my garden shed. These weigh approx 30lbs each. From the description this shelf system should hold that easily. I was immediately concerned when is showed up in a box barely 3 inches thick. The shelves are completely disassembled. The metal is very very thin. It is stamped with very sharp edges and burrs (hence the need to include gloves for assembly). Each shelf is 5 individual pieces of metal, 2 long for the front and back, 2 short for the sides, and then the metal center brace. The shelf edging is not welded or bolted to itself, it simply slots into the standing rails. The MDF (wood) board is also very thin, about 1/4". It simple sits on top of the metal shelf part. The only part screwed together is the center brace. It all seemed very NOT HEAVY DUTY. Especially for something costing $85. If you later desire to adjut the shelf you have to hammer out all four parts and relocate them. The advert also shows the ability to split the unit into two pieces for two separate shelf systems. Absolutely NO WAY would I trust the unit with only two shelf pieces installed (the other would have 3). The legs are way too flimsy for such a setup. Find something else if you really want a "HEAVY DUTY" system, this is NOT it. ... show more
