  • Square up the backing to create a sturdier unit.
Such an inexpensive and effective way to store a a lot of CDs...the instructions were easy to follow, all of the pieces were there and it looks a lot better than I thought for the price. I used tape and a small chunk of wood to put the backing on...make sure you get the back on straight or it will always be a bit wobbly...I used a T-square ruler at one corner to nail in the first few brads. The little glides on the bottom were a nice bonus...the unit slides easily on the wooden floors or carpet. Hubby likes things simple and functional (and not too expensive!)...this works for him. Well packaged and suits the space. I would recommend using a couple of L-brackets to attach this to the wall if you have small children or rambunctious pets...or even clumsy adults...it would be a pain to have to sort and put these all back if the unit fell over. ... show more

  • Nice shelf unit for media. Not stacked modular pieces.
I was looking for a nice-looking shelf storage unit for media. Most of what is available now are units that are essentially two or more modular shelf units that stack together on eachother to complete construction. Very ugly, IMO. This Prepac unit is not modular, no ugly seam that exists on the modular type shelf units. The top and bottom wood pieces are beveled, adding to the stylishness of the unit. Very easy to put together, took about 1 hr total from start to finish, being very careful to get it all right. Probably could have put it together faster if I wasnt so careful. Item was boxed and sealed very securely, but UPS (not USPS), as usual for my area, was very heavy-handed. Even with excellent packaging, item still had small ding (one that I can live with). If you can avoid UPS, please do. Box looked like it had been stabbed by a hunk of rebar. Obviously not the sellers fault. Overall, highly recommend. ... show more

  • Double Multimedia Tower - Not Bad
Yes, it's particle board underneath. Yes, it can be easily damaged. The instructions are just OK. I wish they would have given a hint as to which end the top goes on (the end with the cams). Unfortunately, the holes are in the same positions in both the top and bottom and you can easily try to put them in reversed positions. I did and the cam holes were just a little too small, so naturally, drilled them wider to fit. DOH! Then tried to pull them out and they broke. I ended up buying more dowels and adding glue on all the dowels and abutments. Hope it will be much stronger that way. I don't intend to ever take this apart. I don't know where they got that it can hold 240 blueray discs. I counted 222. Sure, if you turn the DVD on it's side you can space the shelves closer together, but then you can't see what they are. The picture shows a spacing of 5 holes apart for the shelves, but that would only be 5*1.25=6.25" (less the shelf width). Blueray DVDs are 6.75" high so need 6 holes: 6*1.25=7.5" (less shelf width). This means you leave one shelf unused where you can stack DVDs sideways. Particle board shouldn't be a problem since we don't have young kids that might knock it over or be rough with it and once it's built and in-place should be OK. Contrast of the black and oak looks very nice. ... show more

  • Should be about 3 1/2 stars
I was not expecting a museum quality piece, and I did not get it. But, it is servicable and is not obtrusive in the room where it is located. There is also some knd of gunk on the back board which disappears behind the DVD, and a couple of scratches on th bottom piece. Assembly was fairly straightforward except that the back board is not very square. After partial assembly, the top, bottom, and verticals are all fairly and adequately square. Messing with locating the back board was a bit aggravating. I also nailed the back board to the frame with a nail gun using 1" brads, which was much faster than using a hammer and the supplied nails. After some additional research I think an equivalent piece can be boughtfor less which is why the value for money is on the low side. Not a bad buy, but do your research. ... show more

  • Have 5 different storage towers from Prepac and am very happy with all of them
I own two of these and several other Prepac oak storage towers. I use the wider ones for movies, while these are used for video games and music. While you can't expect solid wood at this price, their finish is more attractive than most of the other laminate options in this price point, they assemble easily and come out with reasonably square corners (I've had some similar types of furniture which would come out inconsistently), and feel sturdy. In my case they're in a semi-permanent installation in a room I use as a home theater, and I've also bolted them to the wall to eliminate any possibility of the cats tipping them over (obviously I feel like they're attractive enough that I don't mind bolting them to the wall). The pictures don't really show it well, but the rear inside of the towers matches the shelves - that is, they're black. Only the sides and top have the wood appearance. The base of the unit extends forward a bit from the sides in the front, but is fairly flush with them in the rear. When constructing the units, before you install the back, I found it useful to put some of the shelves inside of it. Since there is some flex to the sides and center column, if you install the back without shelves in it, it is easy to mess up the spacing so that the shelves won't fit. If you use the shelves as spacers then you can guarantee everything will be true and proper width. ... show more

  • A Solid Buy
This product was easy to put together, which many are not. The directions aren't great, but I do have a long history of putting product like this together so it might just be easier for me. In the instructions it states that you should put one shelf in on both sides of the product before putting the back on, and you should. I didn't and it took a bit to get the shelves in, but it is a tight fit, which I do like. The low point on this product was the delivery time. It took a day or two longer to received, but there was bad weather in the Midwest and I live in Florida and the product came by truck. Delivery time is not a reason to not buy this product, unless you are time sensitive. I also had free shipping and I tend not to get upset since I don't pay for the delivery. If I paid a delivery fee, I would probably get a little testy, but I'm a Prime customer. I have over 1800 titles and this new unit will keep part of my DVD/Blu ray collection safe and in order. It's a keeper. ... show more
