The geared tuning is wonderful and the sound, even when playing unamplified is amazing. I have a very expensive italian violin which is very temperamental. I wanted to be a pro but I was kicked out of a university orchestra because I cannot keep time. I don't have to worry about it being stolen. It is completely playable. You WILL love it! If you purchase this look into the very small wireless transmitters that are now available. I use one and now don't need a cord to connect to my fender twin guitar amp. If you can afford a small all tube amplifier get one. The 5 watt ones are very reasonable. You will love the warmth it adds to the violin. The inexpensive carbon fiber bows are very good and are only $30. Update: Dec 7th. I have put lighter guage Pirastro Tonica strings on the violin. The G and D were too heavy and not as responsive to the bow. The G was very heavy and was creating wolf tones on expressive forte musical segments. With the new strings it is even better. I use a shoulder rest. You need one to provide balance if you are playing intense classical pieces. If you play country fiddle and support it totally with the left hand that isn't needed. ... show more

This is a christmas present for my daughter. It does not come with a case, Or a bow. But after plugging everything in, It works. It's christmas present for my daughter, I'll edit my review after she gets it.

    • Beginner friendly
This electric violin is very lightweight, and comfortable to play. The collar rest is adjustable, so it can fit many styles of playing. As long as I'm careful, it doesn't come off the violin. I think there is an instructional video for how to mount the rest. The cheek/chin rest is comfortable too. This is made for beginners. The main part of the violin is made from carbon fiber. The faux violin shapes are made of lightweight plastic. It seems durable, and could probably take a few drops without any damage. There is a decal covering the carbon fiber parts. Anything that is not covered with the decal is made of plastic. There are jumbled letters on the decal, and they have a light reflective rainbow effect. I suppose this can make it more kid friendly. This can be used by any age group though. It is easier to keep in tune. It uses mechanical pegs instead of the more traditional wooden pegs. They are also placed where the fine tuners would be. These pegs stay in place longer, so it needs to be tuned less than a normal wooden peg setup. It is easy to tune without too much pressure to turn the mechanical pegs. This is a good beginner friendly feature. I'm not a good violin player. I am a complete noob. I do have a horse hair bow to play the violin. With the rosin included with the violin, I was able to apply a good amount to get the bow good for playing. It sounded right when I played. It's a nice inclusion. I had no idea I needed it. The violin is not completely silent, but it is much quieter than a traditional violin made from wood. It can be played without plugging it into an amp, mixer, effect pedal, etc. I think it is good that it is electric since I have an electronic music studio. I do have a guitar and effect pedals. I plugged it into my effect pedals, and it sounded really cool. The bass, mids, and treble can be adjusted on the back of the violin for more options. The battery compartment is also in this area. It takes one 9v battery to power it. There is an on/off switch near the compartment too. It's on the side. There is also an input for a 1/4 in. TS cable. I didn't get any noise from this connection. The tones were clear. It's a lot of fun learning to play this thing or even just messing around with the effects. I have been wanting one of these for a while. I already had the bow ready.     • Lightweight, easy to use but feels cheap
This is a nice violin for a cheap starting price, looks pretty good. However, it feels a little cheap, to be expected and the package and listing fails to tell you this comes without a bow, so how do you learn to play without it. This needs to be highlighted much more prominently in the listing, I now have a violin I can only play pizzicato on! ... show more
