  • There's a reason this book has such a high overall rating!
So if you're anything like me, you are searching for a sleep solution for your precious little nugget because you're tired of getting screamed at for 40 minutes each night or having to wake up 4 times a night because baby wants to nurse back to sleep. And in your sleep-deprived haze you've clicked on what you hope will be a solution. Let me save you the trouble of searching any further when I say to you "BUY THIS BOOK!" The author writes candidly about what to expect in terms of sleep from birth through age 5. She tackles how to get your baby to put themselves to sleep, the best ways you can help them sleep better, napping, and common sleep problems. She reassures you as a stressed and overwhelmed new parent on how to do the best job and how to find the right method for you and your baby. I also found her writing to be hilarious as she includes little snippets/side comments that lighten the overall tone of what we're trying to accomplish and make it sound feasible. Now for the results (because that's what really matters right?!)...my 4 month old baby has been successfully putting himself to sleep for the past week...I bought the book a week ago so how's that for results? We do our bedtime routine, I lay him in his crib, and leave the room. Within 10 minutes, he is asleep. He still wakes once a night to have a quick bite to eat, but he's only 4mos so that's to be expected. But what I love about this book is that the author gives a game plan of how to decrease night wakings when you're ready. I've already started tackling naps as well and been very successful in having baby put himself to sleep and sleep longer! Also, to all the people saying this is another cry-it-out book, the author goes into great detail about how to help your baby to sleep with minimal crying. I'm not sure about you, but no matter what I did, there has always been some crying around naps/bedtime. So I'll take 10 minutes of baby whining because he doesn't want to go to sleep (even though he's tired) as opposed to a baby who MUST be rocked/bounced/nursed to sleep. The author does explain the cry-it-out method and how you can approach it to get the best success. Personally, I used a combination of her soothing techniques and saw great success with those! So to all you new parents (or struggling parents) looking for a sleep solution, let me repeat, BUY THIS BOOK! Happy reading and best of luck :) ... show more

  • All you need is this book. Truly.
An accessible, refreshing, clear guide to newborn and infant sleep. The book is a perfect blend of general guidelines, research evidence, points of validation (including for exhausted parents), and some hard truths. I have found this resource so helpful that I’ve bought multiple copies, including several as gifts for friends with newborns. This book is all you need to understand, and teach your baby, independent sleep! The Facebook group companion is a total bonus, but start with the book. I can’t recommend it enough! ... show more

  • Somewhat helpful but basically CIO
Desperate for help with my 14 month old’s sleep, the book does have some interesting and helpful advice on nighttime routines and some of the biology behind sleep, but at the end of the day if you have a very stubborn baby who refuses all the gentle sleep methods this book is going to get you right back to the traditional cry it out method. They refer to it as fuss it out, to me it’s the same concept. ... show more

  • Informative, Empowering, Results Oriented
I'm a breastfeeding, babywearing, co-sleeping mom who wanted baby #2 to be an independent sleeper. I needed to be able to more smoothly manage my life as a parent of 2 and take better care of myself sleep-wise. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from co-sleeping, and lots of good nights co-sleeping with baby #1. But there were lots of bad night also, especially when baby #1 was a toddler, and our lack of ability to manage her sleep patterns became a source of stress that affected various aspects of my family's life in a way that felt undesirable to repeat. Since my husband and I are not people who have the natural mindset or nerves to implement what it takes to achieve independent baby sleep on our own (since it pretty much has to involve crying), this book is what we used. Of all the sleep resources out there, this one resonated with me most because the advice is based on thorough reviews of the evidence on what works most easily and what is safe. Also, the author is a relatable mom so she knows how hard it can be to separate from baby, as well as the kind of information parents need in today's information overload times. I learned a ton. Previously, I had thought that getting independent sleep was about setting up a bedtime routine and then tolerating crying until baby got used to just falling asleep without another person helping. But there is so much more to it - more than any doctor, mom of an independent sleeper, family member or other sleep resource had ever shared with me. Achieving independent sleep following the advice in this book gives you a system of tools that breaks things down into manageable parts. This made me feel like I was setting up my baby to do something difficult with all the comforts and supports that are available (e.g., being really tired, being really relaxed, having non-mom/boob sleep associations, only dealing with bedtime first and dealing with night wakings and night weaning as a totally separate thing...). Overall, I felt it was empowering for me to be guided by a really smart mom in doing something really hard that would be super helpful for my own self-care and well-being. I learned a ton and the guidance worked for us. I 100% feel that there was no way I could have achieved independent sleep without the kind of information, guidance and hand holding provided by the book, the blog, the podcast, the author herself, and the very professional admins of the Facebook page. Now that my 12 month old goes down easily, sleeps all night, and wakes up happy, I feel like a happier person, I get to go to lots of yoga classes and my professional work is flourishing. I also get special time with my big girl after baby goes to bed + I get husband time and me time. I can't say enough about how good those things are for my and my family members' well-being. My baby is happy, adorable and thriving. I feel awesome and much more like a zen mom now that I am sleeping :). This has been a very empowering resource for me. I do wish that the book was a little easier to navigate. I found myself wishing that I had some sort of guide or map to help me jump to different sections. Something that would be based on specific topics of interest, baby's age, or parents' "readiness". But that's my only critique. This book and its associated resources were just what I needed to get the results I wanted. Yay! ... show more

  • Probably the most helpful and straightforward sleep book out there
When you are in the depths of sleep deprivation with a new baby, this book is both incredibly reassuring and provides concrete advice for moving toward better sleep for everyone in the family (recognizing that there's no silver bullet and it's always a moving target). It's also written in an accessible, amusing way that makes reading it enjoyable, even on a re-read at 3 am when baby decides that they are in a new phase of development and what you were doing isn't going to work anymore haha... ... show more
