I don't *have* to use them. The tree feels like it could easily be knocked over, so make sure it's in a spot where that can't happen. It's skinny enough you can put it virtually anywhere you want to add a little something to the space. It is battery operated, so that's a plus for me. This is a cute whimsical additional tree. I like the top. I want to leave it crooked to match my whoville theme. The ornaments (tiny) and star are bargain store quality. The ornaments are usable. The star feels like it will break if not careful (cheap plastic). I’ll most likely get other ornaments and star to use. I did not put it altogether yet because I’m planning to decorate in November. This is a cute enough Christmas decoration. I think I would have preferred the green but that is my fault. I do believe it should have came with a few more lights but I’m afraid it wouldn’t hold much more. The base is secure enough for what comes with it but I have this placed in the corner just in case it tips over from a few extra ornaments and lights. This tree is pretty great! Not top notch quality, but definitely an effective piece of holiday decor! The tree is a nice height, comes with ornaments, AND lights, and is pretty easy to put together. My complaint is that the box for the batteries (which it doesn't come with) for the lights is EXTREMELY difficult to open, in order to put the batteries in. I had to use a tool, and did take a chunk off the box because of this. However, the tree does look very nice and I'm happy to put it out for the holidays! ... show more

This tree is so cute and worked perfect for me. I had a small space I wanted to decorate, it literally is the easiest tree I ever assembled. Put together the center support and base and lift the tree by the top and it goes right down over the support and the top branch fits into the support. Sooo Easy. Everything is included! Lights are battery powered so it’s great no matter where you want to place it because you don’t have to worry about an outlet. And all the decorations are included as well. I recommend this for seniors or anyone else that doesn’t want to be bothered with a lot of decorating but want a little Christmas spirit. The media could not be loaded. We needed a small tree to decorate our apartment entryway. This is perfect! It will need 3 dbl AA batteries. The battery case top did crack when we tried to slide it open, but the batteries fit snug enough and you could tape the lid on if needed. We assembled the tree and it had no shedding. There was a bag of hangers for the bulbs, a bag of bulbs, a string of lights and the assembly pole with legs. The tree looks nice with just the lights as well as with the bulbs. Easy to assemble. The tree is very cute sitting in my corner. My living room becomes very crowded when I place a regular Christmas tree up, actually I have to put it in front of the door, blocking entrance. I have been wanting to get a Pencil Tree and try it out. I tried the aluminum tree because I have always had the green. Wanted something different. It was very easy to put together, just make sure you place it where you want it first because it becomes harder to move once you put it together.
