    • Works ok if you're careful w/the plastic-on-plastic locking teeth at the base of the support rods.
When drilling a straight 90° hole is important or necessary, this drill guide can help. Many times I've held my portable drill at what I thought was a 90° angle - only to find out afterwards that my hole wasn't perfectly straight and was skewed off to one side. If you use this tool carefully, it will work fine but you have to be careful of the locking teeth that hold it at your chosen angle (usually 90° or 45°). Unfortunately, the teeth are plastic, as is the base which the teeth lock into. This makes the tool inferior to ones that have metal teeth that lock into a metal base because this tool's plastic-on-plastic design doesn't allow you to tighten the vertical rods so that they are locked super securely into the base. No matter how tight you turn the knobs at the top, there's still a little wiggle at the joint where the teeth are - making the tool not a precision instrument that will give you the accurate repeatability that a regular drill press would give. The slight wobble isn't a deal breaker for me as I'm not intending to use it for absolutely perfect 90° holes; they just have to be close and not skewed slightly in one direction as things tend to be when drilling by hand. The instructions and illustrations are poor but if you study the Amazon photos you'll figure things out. There were two mystery pieces in my box that are not shown or described: one was a single bolt which has no where that it can be screwed-in and doesn't match the bolts in the base (they have different heads); and the other was a large, round, donut-shaped piece of plastic that matches (and fits inside) the 3" hole in the plastic base and it also has the same V-groove in the top. Was it supposed to be included? It isn't held in place by anything and I can't figure out a use for it but it was in the box, so who knows. Another small design issue is the hex nut that holds the handle on. It's supposed to be held in place by the hex-shaped design in the molded plastic base but either the hex shape in the base is a little too big or the nut is a little too narrow - because the nut doesn't hold in the base when you try and tighten the handle; it spins instead of being held in place by the hex shape of the base. This requires you to get a small wrench that will fit in the small area around the nut so that you can tighten the handle. Once it's tightened down, you're good to go and you won't need to tighten it again unless the handle works itself loose. ... show more

Got this Pop's Choice Portable Drill Guide/Press for use in a small workshop and projects around a small homestead. Design is mediocre, concept is good but details of how it's realized are poor. Especially the plastic pieces at the base of the arms which clamp to the slots, those have innately poor stability and the plastic teeth sliding on metal teeth on the underside is a relatively high wear rate that'll result in relatively short tool service life. The side handle is also too weak. There is no place to store the chuck key and no tether, it'll get lost. Build quality is mediocre, in addition to the design. The plastic fittings at the base of the arms and side handle seem poorly made. The base is alright, seems like there should be a cover piece enclosing the bottom cavity and feet attached, but this is missing, maybe that's intended to be user provided (e.g. 3/8in MDF). The arms are good, heavy bars with threaded holes, fairly good springs, and decent plastic caps for grips. The upper part and chuck are good, the drive bearing feels a little rough but may smooth out with use. Functionality is unusually dependent on user expectations for whether if this is a press or a guide, but mostly the difference is the amount of precision and stability needed. As a drill PRESS, which is usually regarded as a precision tool for drilling straight holes at exact angles, this tool is poor. It is only capable of performing that function with significant user skill, preparation, and an added stabilizing jig of some sort, so this usage is possible but rather difficult. As a drill GUIDE, which is usually regarded as a quick yet imprecise jig to drill large numbers of straight holes, this tool is decent. It has a lot of play (sway) in the base of the arms which the user has to overcome with skill and a steady hand, or modding this tool to improve stability. Price point of $34.99 is high for this build quality compared to similar items. I suggest shopping around. Overall, 3 stars, alright guide, poor press. ... show more
