  • Easy to follow starter set
This set was amazing for a starting player. For $15 you get 3 complete decks. Step by step play guides, damage trackers and a cool play board. My daughter had an easy time understanding the rules with some help reading.

  • Great way to learn how to play!
I’ve played enough Pokémon to know the basics. This thing was for my 6yo son, and it was an amazing way to make the whole process super easy to learn. It has everything you need to slowly, methodically got through the game, start to finish. If you’ve never played, or have someone who hasn’t, this is a great initial investment. It’ll save confusion and frustration. ... show more

  • I love it I thought it was corny but I love it
It’s a great starter kit for the kids they go step by step and the arena is cardboard not paper I recommend this just for practice only

  • The decks are labeled making it pretty easy to separate if mixed with the rest of your cards
It's exactly what it claims to be. A box with three decks. They don't seem to be super balanced, there are a bunch of useless cards - they with my kids ask why they're there, but you can swap them out as soon as you realize they're not your cup of tea

  • Good for younger kids to learn to play Pokemon
Unfortunately we bought the wrong one and paid $5 more than we should have. There's a "battle academy 2" that was newer and cheaper. We bought this for a 1st grader and it was suitable for him to learn since pokemon involves some strategy building and complexity that can be a bit much for 1st grade. Older kids could just get a "battle deck", read the rulebook (downloadable as PDF if needed), and won't find the board very useful as the places to put cards are pretty easy to remember after playing more than once. As for the pokemon game design itself, I'd have to give that 2 stars from my grown-up perspective because I don't think the game is really that well designed. This isn't too surprising though since they started with a popular monster-fighting video game toy franchise then had to shoehorn that into a collectable card game somehow. It's not exactly MtG in sophistication level but I don't think the "pay to win" aspect is too bad as far as such things go and the more simplistic nature of it is more suitable for younger kids who find weird monster stuff appealing. ... show more

  • Great Pokémon set for beginners!
If you’re interested in learning the basics of what Pokémon cards are all about, this is a great set! I’ve played the video games for years, but never understood anything about the cards. This set makes it so easy to learn, and it comes with three pre-made decks of cards to play with, so you don’t even have to worry about the whole card-collection thing until you’re ready. It also has tokens to help you keep track of damage, a plastic coin for heads-or-tails decisions, and a board to help you keep track of how to organize your cards as you play. The game itself is simple enough for ages 6+ as it states (well, 5+ for very patient and mathematically gifted kiddo, maybe 8+ for a less patient one), but it’s definitely interesting enough for adults too. No previous knowledge of Pokémon is strictly required, so anyone can join in! ... show more

  • Exactly what I needed!
I bought this because my 6 year old son is getting interested in Pokémon cards and received many as Christmas gifts. He wanted to play the game, but I had no idea how to and the online tutorials seemed too complex for him. While looking for more cards so I could play with him, I found this on Amazon and the reviews seemed promising. It was perfect for him and I to learn how to play the game. We had a lot of fun with it! It comes with 2 packs with step by step tutorials, another pack for when you're ready for more. My favorite part is the game board that shows you exactly how to set it up AND has a "cheat sheet" of the steps for each turn. Also includes a rules reference booklet. Highly recommend for learning the game. ... show more

  • Bang for your buck!
It comes with three decks and the board is made well, not flimsy. I like the box to store stuff. Typically a deck costs $14, so getting 3 (plus board, etc) for $18 is amazing.
