  • PS3 fatboy console as advertised
Edition: Standard
Item arrived early! Got it all set up & works perfectly. Came with a controller & all of the necessary wires. Only one minor issue in that there was a scuff on the outside of the console. What matters is that it works for all platforms as advertised: 1, 2 & 3. I appreciate it and my husband loves it! ... show more

  • The 1st Generation PS3 is Absolutely the best!
Edition: Standard
PlayStation 3 60GB System Yeah its like a heavy 500lb lift every time you pick it up, Yes it had and has over heating issues but you know what? THIS IS STILL THE PS3 MODEL YOU SHOULD GET. Why you ask? Because what most kids don't understand is that Sony Corporation Japan set out to make the best all-in-one console they could make upfront. Sony gave us the best version of PS3 in the very start and from there they began to strip away features. Remember, the first Gen PS3 could read any type memory card, had 4 USB ports, an On/Off power switch and above all could read PS1/PS2/PS3 games. The younger kids are looking at the new models like "Whoa, its lighter and slimmer" not realizing Sony just stripped away and Dumber downed the capabilities of the system by removing the Chip set that was dedicated to reading the PS1/PS2 games and the memory card reader slots. Lots of fans including myself had some gripes about the first Gen PS3. Mainly the over heating was a problem which led to other problems like the YLOD (yellow light of death) and the Backwards Compatibility would not work sometimes. What most people didn't realize is there are fixes for the over heating problems. For example, My PS3 has not only an external cooling fan to pull heat out but it also has a Bigger, Better Fan inside and it has Thermal Padding on the CPU. For those that don't know what Thermal padding is, It is a soft clay like material that acts as a heat sink for the circuits on the PS3 motherboard. We all complained that the 60GB hard drive was too small to hold all the downloads and game data but Sony made the hard drive easily replaceable by even the most novice gamer. I replaced my 60GB standard laptop type drive with a 240GB Solid State Drive. It only took 10 minutes to change the drive, literally removing the drive cover, 3 screws, switching the drive, putting it back in, restarting my PS3, formatting the drive and done. So to make a long story short, If you are looking to buy a PS3 don't be suckered into the slim PS3. Buy yourself a 1st GEN. PS3 for around $200usd and take it to a repairman to fix it up with these minor upgrades and you will enjoy that system for years to come. Everything you need can be purchased right here on Amazon.com for reasonable prices. You can also get some YouTube video tutorials on how to do this all yourself and save big on the upgrades. Either way you decide you will have made the right decision if you buy the 1st Generation PS3. **UPDATE 11FEB2013 - Here is a guide to help you fix and extend the life of your PS3** [...] ... show more

  • REFURBISHED PS3's from any seller...Gamble worse than Vegas
Edition: Standard
Please note this is NOT a reflection on the Sellers (they have no way of controlling Sony): Sony has been famous for "refurbishing" their game consoles, with mixed results...but a Sony-refurbished PS3 console is generally UNSAFE risks more than safe risks. You do not know what was wrong with the console that is refurbished by Sony (neither does any Amazon Marketplace Seller, so it's not a Seller's fault). If you are LUCKY, the refurbished unit had a legitimate mechanical or single-chip breakdown (power unit replacement or a replaced faulty disc drive), so it will serve you well for a couple of years etc. But a vast majority of PS3 refurbs seem to be from the famous heat/dust solder failure we call LYOD, which when refurbished by Sony (solder reflow etc.) and put back into consumer's hands, gives you a "previously-LYOD-ed" unit. These units are famous with owners even today because of their Roll-the-Dice-short life span. A previously-LYOD-ed PS3 MAY last longer than a few months or shorter than a few days, and THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW when the death will occur. The risk and likeliness that a "Previously-LYOD-ed" refurbished unit from Sony will die again is NOT the same risks you take from a unit that Sony refurbished for some other non-LYOD breakdown. It's greater. You don't get any details on the refurb's history when you get one from Sony. (For the record, my recent refurb died after three hours...I knew the risk). Sony rates their refurbished units at around $200 USD (the amount they charge an owner to repair or swap out his damaged PS3 unit). As you may notice on Amazon and other sites, Sellers are allowed to make a profit by selling these "Fresh from Sony Refurb" units at $400 and up (no arguments with that...we are free people who have a right to turn a profit). But if you're a Buyer looking to own one of these first-version PS3s(arguably the best version of the PS3), please THINK before you decide to pay $900, $500, or $300... for a REFURBISHED UNIT. Is it logical to gamble that much $$ for a unit that, if it is one of the maybe hundreds of previously-LYOD PS3s that Sony restored a weak pulse to and put back into circulation as Refurbished, may stay running for last 40 weeks or 40 minutes. 40 minutes for 400 dollars... 40 weeks for 900 dollars... THAT'S gambling at the EXPENSIVE roulette table!! ... show more

  • One of my old 60 GB units died ...
Edition: Standard
One of my old PS3 60 GB units died after many years of service. I went to the Sony website, and they charge $129 to refurbish a dead unit (I think this excluded commercial use, obvious physical abuse, or water damage). As we haven't abused our system, it was back to be refurbished. Sony sent us a replacement 60 GB unit with a different serial number, but the same model number as our old. During the wait, I ordered another 60 GB unit from the Amazon warehouse (this was within the past month). The replacement unit came back, as did the new unit from Amazon warehouse. Both seemed to be boxed similarly, which causes me to think the occasional Amazon warehouse PS3 60 GB unit sold here may be refurbished by Sony prior to being put up for sale at Amazon. My kids still play PS2 games, and the PS2 capability of these units has been well used. Today, our use of PS2 titles is greatly reduced. Though the ability to play almost all PS2 games on these units was one of the great selling points that caused me to buy them many years ago, shortly after first release. If you have PS2 titles, and want to run PS2 and PS3 games, this console is tough to beat. There are very few PS2 titles that don't work with this console (and they are sort of well known by those who are likely to have them). PS2 games display better on HDTV with the PS3 and generally look a lot better than if played on a PS2. Anyone reading this should understand the value of a PS3, and the value of the Sony network. These consoles are more for older gamers, or gamers who inherit older titles and want to see them played on modern HDTV's. The 60 GB PS3 is less energy efficient than newer units, it has more USB ports, and is generally a bit heavier. I suspect that in the next few years a PS 4 will be released, and it won't support PS2 titles as they will all be very old by then. The 60 GB PS3's, while fantastic, are increasingly collectors / enthusiast consoles and are not necessary for the vast majority of users. ... show more

  • PS3 60GB still the best today!
Edition: Standard
If you're in the market for a playstation 3, I highly recommend looking into getting an original 60GB model, the best out there! It seems that Sony continues to remove more and more features from the newer models as where the 60GB had it all. Full hardware backwards compatibility with all your PS2 games (some of them still have active online communities) 4 usb slots (the new "slim" models only have two) and memory card readers. The new PS3's have removed so much since the original launch. If you find yourself running out of hard drive space, you can easily upgrade it to a 500GB (they are $54.99 on amazon brand new) to give you plenty of storage room for all your games and movies. As someone with a big collection of original playstation and playstation 2 games, buying a 60GB PS3 was one of the best purchases I've made. ... show more

  • Be careful about what seller you get this from...
Edition: Standard
Very disappointed in the unit I received. For starters, it was said to be in very good condition, yet arrived with scratches and smudges all over it. Ok, what ever, I set everything up, and put in Persona 3. Turns out, it doesn't read PS2 games. WTF? For this I could've just bought a slim. And to top that off everything runs slow, I frequently get unlimited please wait screens and can't even connect to the internet. Thankfully it seems to play ps3 games but I don't know how long this thing will last. Disappointed is the only thing I can say about this as I was very excited to finally get a PS3. Could've just got a Slim and PS2, would've saved me a lot of trouble 🤦♂️🤦♂️ ... show more

  • Its like having my own little super nova in the middle of my living room
Edition: Standard
I'm a serious gamer and have 7 different consoles including my 360 on my bookcase so I'm not by any means on Sony's payroll while writing this review. At first I was skeptical over paying $599 for a gaming console, how can it justify its outrageous price. For starters it lets you create a virtually unlimited amount of PS1 and PS 2 memory cards on its harddrive so with the help of an adapter sold seperately. I've been able to transfer all my saves from older PS1 and PS 2 memory cards to the PS 3 or download the data from the PS 3 back on to a memory card with no problems. The PS 3 has played all of my PS 2 and PS 1 games with no problems, it really irks me that its been over a year and I still can't play but 5 of my xbox games on the 360 and even then I can't transfer any saved data... I love never getting up to search for memory cards any more. You can pause a game at any time, go into the menu and choose the card you want then assign it to a virtual slot. The graphics of the first generation PS 3 games are about even with the 360 but I don't think thats going to last long. PS 3 blu-ray disc give the potential for some huge levels. The negatives so far are 1.The controllers rumble feature is gone "crys" 2.I've had to purchase the memory card adapter and hdmi cables. 3.The usb charging cable for the controller is two feet to short making me sit on the floor in front of the sofa if it needs charging. 4.The PS 3 blows VERY hot air like a hair dryer set on a low setting. My computer doesn't generate this much heat. I've moved everything two feet away and purchased a fan to blow on it. Its like having my own little super nova in the middle of my living room. The positives so far are 1.It plays all PS1 and PS2 games 2.It eliminates the need for PS 1 and PS 2 memory cards 3.The graphics are gorgeous and right up there with the 360 4.You can watch blu ray movies My conclusion, Buy it! ... show more
