The Platinum Preppy arrived unusable. I have never used one of these before, so I don't know if it is defective or what. It arrived a mess, with no ink the cartridge - it had leaked all over the place. When I took it apart there was a steel ball bearing rattling around the barrel and an empty ink cartridge. It didn't write at all. I'm going to attempt to clean it up, buy another ink cartridge, and see if it works or if it is defective. I'll update this review once I have received a new ink cartridge. UPDATE: Ok - I received a new pack of black ink cartridges, and I disassembled the pen and put it through a couple of cycles in my ultrasonic cleaner with water and dish soap - it cleaned up nicely. After installing a new ink cartridge and letting it set for a bit, it now writes nicely. I don't know what happened during shipping the first time - I have no idea how the ink cartridge got popped open and how that little steel ball bearing got loose out the front of the cartridge causing the mess - but all is fine now. It now works well and I have updated my 'Stars' to reflect it. ... show more

While I had heard that Noodlers pens have an odor I truly didn't expect it to be this bad. It's pretty awful. As far as the flex nib, it's just ok. Only gives a slight variation in line width even with excessive pressure. For the price I'd say it's an okay pen but I won't be buying another.

Excellent fountain pen for those just getting into writing with fountain pens and for experienced writers, too. This comes in several colors, both the pen itself and ink cartridges. Great price! Only uses the Preppy Platinum ink cartridges…these are available at Amazon.com.

Very smooth and comfortable fountain pen. It does NOT seem like a medium nib. More of a fine point. I purchased for calligraphy and it’s waterproof ink. I don’t think it’s good for calligraphy though. If you like a smooth writing fine line gel pen, you will love this.

The Platinum Preppy was recommended as a good entry level fountain pen. It's a smooth writer (I bought the medium nib) that lays down just the right amount of ink. Very happy with the purchase. Was not happy that the pen arrived in nothing more than a shipping envelope, without the original packaging or instructions,, so when I buy more of these I will buy them elsewhere. ... show more
