  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fresh water reel but in salt water...?
Style: 7.5:1 Left Handed
The folks at Piscifun, over-all, did an excellent job designing and building this reel and, in fresh water, this is a 5-star reel, no questions asked... Pros: All 10 bearings are INside the reel (as versus putting 4 of them in the crank handle knobs and only six where they really count). Super-effective magnetic cast control. Very good ergonomics. Excellent bushings on crank handle knobs. Very smooth and effective drag. Great choice of gear ratios/retrieve rates. (proper options for speed vs power) Light weight yet solid body. Light wight, very low inertia spool. Smooth, quiet, cast and retrieve (good gears/support bearings) Good placement of side cover release. (easy to operate but won't be accidentally released). Cons: The ball bearings on the level-wind should be high-quality bushings or, better yet, SEALED bearings (as vs shielded) especially since this reel is recommended for use in salt water... I'll explain... Any casting reel that places ball bearings (even double-shielded bearings) where they are likely to be exposed to water (such as crank handle knobs and level winds) means that those bearings (and the shaft that goes through them) will need very frequent attention and this reel has ball bearings on the level-wind worm shaft... There is, constantly, wet line going through the line guide and the water that splashes off of the spool and line WILL migrate onto the worm shaft and into the bearings... SHIELDS, WHILE GREAT FOR PREVENTING DIRT/GRIT, DO NOT STOP WATER AND BALL BEARINGS, BY THEIR VERY NATURE, TRAP WATER IN THE BALL RACEWAYS... ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars So good I've ordered three; not great for cranking though
Style: 8.4:1 Left Handed
I'll admit it, I was skeptical about how well the Alloy M would perform. I have a Piscifun Torrent 7.1:1 and it's decent. Casting distance isn't superb, but it's a budget-friendly option for one of my small/cheap casters. Honestly, it does very well for the price, but the Alloy is in a league of its own. I was looking to add a few better reels to some newer rods and took a shot on the Alloy M, and wow. This is buttery smooth - smoother than my SLX DC. In fact, it was so smooth I thought it wasn't retrieving at first! Excellent build, quiet, and casts like a dream after a few seconds of dialing in the lure weight. The only exception I've found is with casting on a glass cranking rod. No matter what I tried, I got backlashes like crazy. Like, 3-out-of-4 casts, crazy. Because of the whip action of this rod, I'm assuming the sudden increase of line speed simply causes too much spool speed. So, I've dedicated my SLX DC to my Phenix cranking rod - ZERO issues. Perhaps other, more proficient anglers won't have such an experience, or those using graphite or more composite rods. Alternatively, I've tried this on my 7' MH Favorite Defender and even my 7-10 St. Croix swimbait rod, and it's on point. From 1/4 ounce to 2 ounce lures, it's smooth and quiet. I've only had two backlashes and one was caused by heavy wind and the other by a casting error where the bait hit the water pretty suddenly. Both were easy to fix, nothing that would delay fishing. I got the 6-speed version because my hope was to pair it with my cranking rod, but that was not to be. So, my plan is to link it with a 6-10 M caster I'll be getting soon. For slower work, I think it'll be great. I liked the reel so much I ordered an 8-speed for my Defender and even got an 8-speed Alijoz for my swimbait rod. If they keep performing like this, I'll get another Alloy for my H rod as well. I love high-value fishing gear, and Piscifun just keeps delivering. I'll be trying a spinning reel soon for my St. Croix M rod too. I've had great experiences with Cadence rods and reels as well and am looking forward to seeing how the spinning gear compares. I now have 4 reels and a small fishing bag from Piscifun and will return for more gear moving forward. I'm loyal to brands that produce great products. VERY HIGHLY recommended ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Built like a tank
Style: 7.5:1 Right Handed
This is the best reel on the market for the price it’s built like a tank with 3 high speed bearings supporting the spool 22lbs of drag and casts as far or further than most of my high dollar Diawa and Shimano reels. I use this for flipping and punching heavy vegetation and have put it through the wringer and it’s tough as nails. You won’t find a better reel for the money except for their 300 size Alijos ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect beginner reel
Style: 8.4:1 Left Handed
It casts as good as a 200 dollar reel and is very easy to use and is made high quality for the price.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Good for me
Style: 8.4:1 Right Handed
I have yet to troll the river with it but it works well for everything I've tried so far. While throwing cranks for walleye, I snagged a 15lb carp. Dragged that thing in sideways without a problem. Drag worked very well. I have a Lew's at about the same price point and it cast slightly better but if you don't fish everyday like I do, I doubt you would ever know the difference. ... show more

  • 2.0 out of 5 stars Not Saltwater Worthy
Style: 8.4:1 Right Handed
I bought one of these reels about a year and a half ago. Liked it so much I bought a second. They cast well, are light and the drag systems are solid when new. Unfortunately, they don’t hold up to use in saltwater. The drag system on one reel locked up a number of months back. I contacted the company, and rather than replace the reel (which was less than a year old) they gave me a discount on a new one. I now have three of them. The replacement reel began to grind recently, so I took it apart and found rust on a number of the parts. Two of the three are now paper weights. I wash my equipment in fresh water after every use, and I have decade-old “name brand” casting reels that still function fine. I dislike writing negative reviews about any product or company, but I hate the thought of someone spending their hard-earned money on equipment that will fail — as I did. My guess is that they’ll do fine in freshwater use only, but if you fish the salt look elsewhere. ... show more
