  • Fantastic upgrade
I recently bought the Philips Hue Play HDMI Sync Box 8K on Prime Days Sale and paired it with my Hue Bloom and OmniGlow lights as TV accent lighting and it works perfectly! The colors sync beautifully with what’s on screen, creating a really immersive experience for movies and games. One of the best things is that it now supports 8K 60 fps and 4K 120 fps, so I can finally enjoy my PS5 Pro with full performance and responsive via ambience lighting on with no noticeable latency at all. It feels super smooth and immersive. What I also love is how functional it is. The Sync Box has 4 HDMI inputs, which freed up 3 HDMI ports on my TV since I can now plug all my devices directly into the box. Setup was simple, and switching between inputs is fast and seamless. If you already have Hue lights, this box really takes your setup to another level. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it for both the convenience and the incredible ambiance it adds! ... show more

  • Magical Technology- Worth the Quirks
Cost aside, this technology is really impressive. It works perfectly with all our Philips Hue lights (and Alexa), especially the gradient TV strip light, which I ordered before I realized I needed the Sync Box to sync it to my TV. So then we got the Sync Box, and I realized that it doesn’t support Smart TV apps - I almost gave up at this point. But then I tried using it with our Amazon Fire Stick, and it works PERFECTLY. It’s like magic. We have some pendant lighting in our kitchen that I added to the “entertainment scene” for movie nights, along with the tv gradient strip, a bloom lamp and another Hue lightbulb/lamp in our living room. The sync box has 4 hdmi ports, and can support computers, phones, soundbars, cable boxes, almost anything you can plug into hdmi. The fire stick is an incredibly cheap device compared to the $500+ I had invested in the TV lights and sync box, so it’s funny that was the solution. Worth it! ... show more

  • Garbage app
When this thing works, it's amazing and completely changes the home theater experience for the better. The problem is this little box whose sole purpose is to keep your lights synced sure doesn't work all that often. It should JUST WORK. When the TV is on, it should just automatically sync the lights. But it doesn't. You have to go into the Hue Play app and tell it to. Every. Single. Time. You can set up remote shortcuts which I recommend doing, so that you can turn it on whenever you turn the TV on. However, sometimes it just doesn't want to listen to RF signals which requires a power cycle to resolve. Really, it should just always be on and syncing the lights. Why would anyone go to the trouble of buying this and all the lights and NOT want it on? It adds so much that once you've seen it in action, you'll always want it on. So these burdens on the end user have lost it a couple stars from me. So why am I giving it one star? Well, because the Hue app is total crap. It updates frequently but doesn't seem to provide any new features, instead seemingly just to want increasingly more privileges to collect your data. I don't like that, but these frequent updates also have led to my box being unusable some of the time. The app claims the box is not detected, so I went through the installation process again. The app then said the box was already connected, so it could not add it to my home. So it's both connected and disconnnected at the same time, and since you need to ALWAYS tell it to do the ONE thing it does, that ONE thing that is it's SOLE purpose for existing, and that ONE thing an owner would NEVER conceivably want it NOT to do, I can't use it when it randomly decides that it will ignore RF signals. So I sort of hate this thing. It really adds a ton to the viewing experience, but this box is like beta quality at best. And this is their second time up to bat with these contraptions! I am curious how awful their first Hue Sync box was. ... show more

  • Pricey but satisfying
Pricey. Caught it at a discount. Love the box though. Glad I didn’t pay full retail for it.

  • Immersive home cinema with head-scratching headaches
I like Hue Sync Boxes enough that I upgraded from the previous version, but some of their decisions don't make sense. For example, there should definitely be an Ethernet port on the back, but there isn't. Also, they could do a better job explaining their settings like hot plug detection, CEC, etc. It's trial-and-error for me to set everything up in a way that works for my family. Another issue is the bridge. The Sync Box counts as a device toward their bridge device limit, and I have 4 Sync Boxes and ~60 lights. They either need to launch bridge enhancements or improve their Smart Voice integrations to support > 1 bridge on an account. ... show more

  • Works much better than the old sync box, especially for Apple TVs connected to an LG OLED TV.
This is working perfectly with my Apple TV and LG OLED TV and fixes all the problems I had with the old unit. The 1st generation 4K box was plagued with problems, including frequent crashes that would briefly cut the video signal to the TV. I also had to run the old box in "Enhanced Compatibility" to work properly, which noticeably degraded the quality of the video signal. All of that has been completely resolved with the new 8K box. Very glad I ignored the negative reviews and made the upgrade. ... show more
