  • YES YOU CAN CONNECT WITHOUT A HUE BRIDGE / HUB
Style: Sensor Only (New Version)
As of January 2022, I can confirm YES, you are indeed able to connect this motion sensor directly to an alexa echo speaker, as long as your alexa echo speaker is one of the newer ones that supports “zigbee.” After connecting it, you can use Alexa “routines” so that when the motion sensor is triggered, something “happens” (like a light turning on). I just connected this Philips Hue Motion Sensor to my Echo 4 (which has zigbee). I do not have a Philips hub. I am not able to adjust the sensitivity of the sensor, but it does work for me. Also, since this is NOT SUPPORTED by Philips Hue, it’s possible this could stop working at a future date (I have no idea.. hopefully it will keep working…). To connect the motion sensor to Alexa, don’t use the Hue app. Instead, go into the Alexa app on your phone, go to Devices, click the “+” button at the top to add a new device…. Choose “Motion Sensor” (the list is not in alphabetical order… so it may take a second to find this option)…. Then on the next step DO NOT CHOOSE PHILIPS HUE — instead, scroll to the bottom, and choose “Other”… next choose “Zigbee”. At this point you’ll want your motion sensor to be in “pairing mode” or whatever it’s called. To do this, press and hold the reset button on the back of the motion sensor for 3 to 5 seconds. Let go. The front of the motion sensor should have a new light that comes on. Go back to your phone’s alexa app. Click “Discover Devices / next step.” After it’s connected, to use the motion sensor in alexa, you’ll need to create an “alexa routine” in your alexa app. You’ll have to google instructions for that if you’re not familiar. When creating the routine, for the routine’s trigger (the part labelled “When this happens..”) you will want to select “Smart Home” and then select your motion sensor from the list. These instructions are based on my experience with an iPhone Alexa app in January 2022; if you have android it may be a hair different Unrelated note: I think this sensor has a built in thing.. where if won’t “trigger” twice if you walk past it twice in a row. So if you walk past it, and the lights come on. Let’s say you very quickly use your phone to turn the lights off, and very quickly you walk past the motion sensor again… the light will *not* turn back on for a 2nd time (in this example, you did everything I said very quickly, in less than 5 or 10 seconds). On the other hand: if you walk past the sensor, light comws on. Then you turn off the light (by app), then wait 10 or 20 seconds.. and then walk *again* past the motion sensor.. then *yes, in that case the light will indeed turn back on*. I think it has this weird timing thing.. so that if verball turn off the light as you walk out of the room… the motion sensor won’t just turn the light right back on when it sees you walk out. Something like that. Not sure ... show more

  • Not native to Smartthings-not recommended for it
Style: Sensor Only (New Version)
I purchased this because I saw a review that said the purchaser had gotten us to work with his smartthing system. While that is possible, it is not simple. I found a third-party driver that allowed me to use it but it didn’t operate properly. I do not recommend this at all if you are using smartthings exclusively. If you have a Philips hue hub, it may be much easier to integrate it into your smart thing system. Check out the Aeotech brand for easier smartthings integration. I didn’t find them until I was troubleshooting this device. ... show more

  • Expensive
Style: Sensor Only (New Version)
This works with the Hue systems - and overall, it does as expected. It is pricey for what you get. I recommend if you really need a motion sensor; otherwise, pass.

  • Essential.
Style: Sensor Only (New Version)
Didn't want to buy it, but honestly your lights are kind of pointless without it. This brings it all together and allow it to work as one. Bought it from those late nights walks out of the bedroom into the living room. Last thing you want is to bump and break something expensive because it's dark. It's a 5 star item. However, the app implementation makes it finicky for me. Perhaps you will be more fortunate, but sometimes it doesn't turn on all my lights as it should because the app's daylight setting reports the "light will not trigger". Increasing this setting fixes it, but it seems it has to constantly be modified. Haven't quite figured that part out yet. But overall, excellent product - if configured right I suppose. ... show more

  • Plays well with Apple
Style: Sensor Only
I bought several Hue products to act as a system for automating my household lights in certain rooms for daily use, & also to give the illusion that someone is at home when no one is. The products included the one for which I am posting this review, and I will be posting the identical review for the other products I bought. The products involved are the White Ambiance Decorative Candle 40 W dimmable, the White Ambiance 60W Dimmable, the Dimmer Switch with Remote, the Motion Sensor, and the Hue Hub. I use these products over an eero based WiFi system, with the Apple HomeKit app operating on my Apple TV4. I control them remotely from my iPhone and my iPad, using the Home app from Apple and the Hue app. (You really need to use both to set the system up, because it maximizes your options to do so.) Setting up the system was quite easy, and all of the accessories work as one would expect. Nevertheless, there is room for improvement, which is why I’ve rated all of them, together, as 4 rather than 5 stars. The biggest problem I have with the system concerns our chandeliers. Both of the ones we have are dimmable, and one of them is controlled by switches at two different doorways. Both of them take 3 light bulbs, and neither of them will function reliably if all three of the bulbs are Hue bulbs. The problem is that when all three of the bulbs are Hue bulbs, they flicker on & off, rendering it impossible to use the chandelier at all. This is a known issue with certain light fixtures which are dimmable, and Phillips is upfront with the likelihood that this could occur. Unfortunately, you won’t know if you have the problem till you try it out. The best solution is to rewire the chandeliers so that they are not dimmable. But pending having that done, I discovered that the living room chandelier works just fine if one light socket is left empty. Not true for the dining room chandelier, but for that one, I discovered that if two of the bulbs are Hue, and the third is a refrigerator light bulb, the flickering does not occur. The problem is that in order to use the scheduling & remote features for the Hue bulbs, the socket the bulbs are in have to be switched on all the time, which means that in the dinning room, the refridgerator light winds up being on all the time. A minor problem I have with Hue lights is that they are all 60 watts (or less). This is not bright enough to read by. For instance, I had three 100 watt bulbs in both our chandeliers, and even when I get three Hues to operate correctly in them, it’s not quite bright enough. I’m hoping that Phillips is working on higher watt versions of the Hue bulbs. The remote device and the motion detector work just fine. Oddly, the motion detector also gives the temperature at the place where it is positioned. For what it’s worth, the ordinary Hue bulbs will work outside even when the temperature drops as much as 20 degrees below zero. At least, that’s been my experience after about a month of use involving a lot of subzero temperatures. ... show more

  • Perfect For My Closet Light
Style: Sensor Only (New Version)
Now I don't need Alexa to turn my closet light on or off. And I am definitely not pulling the light string! Light now turns on when I open the closet door and closes after a few minutes (I set it to 3 minutes).
