Our dogs had a horrible accident in which one of them got their mouth stuck in the collar of the other one while they were playing. They are big dogs over 80 lbs each and with all the rolling, struggling and crying going on with them, we barely saved the one who was being suffocated. We took them to vet and that's the first time we ever heard about break away collars. Our vet told us that she had seen three cases of collar strangulation recently. Now we tell EVERYONE we know about what happened and tell them to get a breakaway. These collars absolutely break away with enough pressure. We find these collars on the floor when our dogs are playing and pulling on each other's collars. They work! We were very lucky, I wish I had known these collars existed before now. I have 4 dogs. It's important for your dog to always have identification on, even in the house. I have had these collars break away during rough play, and it's designed to. But they pop right back together. No issues so far with daily use, and they never just randomly fall off. You do have to hook both D rings together to use with a leash. But much safer then a regular collar. ... show more

This is a great collar. I have a very athletic little APBT who every so often will jump/climb a very tall gate when I get home and before I get to the house, as well as fences, ladders and other things while following me around our property. I finally got one after a trainer that I like had mentioned them and because I was afraid she’d get caught on one of the gates. Sure enough, not long after I bought the collar, I found it laying on one side of the 6ft chain link gate and she was on the other side. I was extremely glad I’d bought the collar. Another time she went under a parked vehicle and got caught and the collar gave away under the vehicle. I’m satisfied with the amount of force it takes for the collar to break away. The only downside is that if you reach to grab your dog by the collar and don’t get it by both rings, it will break away if they pull hard- but I think that’s the case with any worthwhile breakaway collar under that amount of pressure. I’ve had zero issues with it coming apart during rough play with other dogs, but I know it would come apart if they actually got caught in it. I definitely recommend this collar, especially if you have an adventurous dog with a tendency to get themselves into sticky situations. Even dogs out on large properties, or dogs that live and play with other dogs... but really any dog could benefit, because you just never know. I once had to untangle a dog who was being strangled by her collar in an accident playing with another dog in which you couldn’t unclip the collar. Like other reviewers have attested to, it can be a lifesaver. In fact, my Mom bought one for one of her dogs after seeing mine work as intended. My dog is a small and lean 50lb APBT, I got a medium and it fits her really well. ... show more

    • Wouldn't break away

I was initially very disappointed in this purchase. Was bought for my 11 week old rottweiler pup. Call me paranoid, but I don't want to risk her strangling herself with a collar. At the same time, she needs to get used to wearing a "necklace" so she can be leash trained. I was sure this was the solution. I couldn't make it pop open by hand. I'm not exaggerating when I say I pulled HARD with both hands to try to make it break away. I eventually hooked it over my foot and pulled, that made it pop. But there was no way I was putting that on my pup. Just as reassurance that it's not a weakness issue, I can hold back my six year old male rottweiler with a leash when he sees a rabbit. My husband found it in the trash. After he pulled it apart, yes he could make it open, he agreed that it wasn't safe. He used a rotary tool to grind some of the plastic away. It now pops open with (my best guess) about 8-10 pounds of pressure. Zena is now the new owner of a bright red collar. She currently hates it, not gonna lie, but she hasn't been able to scratch it off, yet. For those that worry, yes it's removed at night until she decides to accept it. Hopefully soon, I will be able to start her leash training. I'm very confused over why a break away collar would be made to be that difficult to actually break away. Benefit of the doubt, maybe I got a defect. If you have the ability to grind/sand the end to loosen it, then I recommend taking the chance. Keeping my pup safe is worth it. But be sure to test it before use. I ultimately gave it four stars because I don't have the knowledge or skills to make my own and it was relatively easy to fix. But I couldn't, in all fairness, give a full five stars. ... show more
