  • Wore Out Within 9 Months Of Use
Color: Walnut/Dark Brown Size: Medium Style: Outdoor Log Cabin
This was the very first wooden dog house I ever purchased online for my dogs. It seemed affordable, had free shipping on Amazon (gotta love free shipping!), and I loved the look- it matched our Alaskan cabin to a T! The one in the picture is not the one I received. I received one with a black roof and black borders on the sides. The wood was also a darker color. But this is a 'verified review' so as you can see- I did purchase this- just received a different yet similar product. So I'll review the one that I received. It originally arrives in 8 wooden peices- along with about 30 nuts and bolts. It's boxed neatly, and I recieved no broken peices. We have a tough shipping transit by plane to our rural homestead- so I was really surprised to see that this box made it in good condition. It's heavy! Very heavy. I'd guestimate around 100 pounds. If you're not too keen on lifting heavy objects, make sure there's someone around to help you move it when it arrives. I assembled mine inside, but looking back I'd highly recommend you assemble it either in a garage or in the exact spot you intend to have the house set up. This thing is huge! And it holds true to its original measurements- 40 x 48 x 45. It also has a really strong chemical smell- I'm assuming from the finish placed on the wood. It doesn't smell like cedar. It smells like toxic paint. It stunk up my entire home. Luckily, I'm not sensitive to smells. I assembled it, alone, in about 2 1/2 hours. But with two carpenntry-inclined individuals it could easily be up in just 30 minutes. I started with the walls. I set them all up, and then slid the bolts into each matching hole. Once that was finished I went around and put nuts on each one. Then I went around and retightened each nut. I then flipped the walls upside down and attached the raised 'feet' of the house. This keeps it about 4 inches off the ground. Once again they bolted in. Then I flipped the house over and set the floor boards in. These do not attach to the house- rather they all connect and lay flat in the bottom. There are no screws- they just fit in like puzzle peices (this proved to be a problem later- but I'll get to that soon). Once finished with the floor I attached the roof. This is the only part thar requires screws- and for me a Dewalt. It fit on snug and easily. The end... or so I thought. The first problem arose when moving the house outside. Because the floor boards aren't actually attached, they quickly fell out when I tipped the house verticle to get it out of the door. So I had to reinstall them once the house was outside. This didn't seem like a big issue, but the floor boards became a bigger problem in the winter time. In Alaska, obviously, we get snow. Dog houses need to be lifted up periodically throughout the winter. These floor boards would crack, flip, and fall out each time I lifted the house. Overtime one or two boards completely fell off- making an easy place for my dogs poor paws to get caught. They eventually all completely fell apart- and by the end of the winter my dogs were sleeping outside because the house flooring was so uncomfortable. In the beginning of the winter the house seemed really sturdy. The slanted roof let snow easily fall off. The huge door let me dogs sit upright (they're medium to large sized malimutes- to give a size comparison). The roof shingles were wood- which made a comfortable spot for the dogs to lay down in the sun, rather than on the snowey ground. They LOVED the roominess of the house. But as the winter got colder, and windier, the huge door began to let snow in. And the roominess offered absolutely no insulation from the cold. The walls seemed really thin and drafts were evident. I ended up fabricating an insulation kit with blankets, pillows, and hay to keep them warm. Of course, as we already know, by the end of the winter they were spending more time outside than inside the house. At this point the snow began to melt and things got even worse (as if that was possible). Mind you, it had only been aboout 9 months of use by this point. But with the melting snow the wood began to absorb every inkling of moisture. No idea why, but it was terrible! The roof began to concave in, and when the dogs would hop up on it, it'd bounce like a trampoline. The walls began to wobble back and fourth and even after reinforcing the bolts, they began to sag (bend inwards). Eventually the roof completely fell through. And when I picked up the house to throw it away the walls split in half. So after 10 months of use this dog house quickly became a poor investment. This time I opted for a smaller, thicker, pine constructed dog house in a similar style. I like the offset door because the dogs can either choose to look outside or hide away. The raised floor kept snow off, but the unconnected floor boards caused some major issues. I took the ideas that I liked (slanted roof, offset door, raised floor) and transferred them to my new buy. But I also looked for options of a different kind of wood, a thicker construction, a better roof (with actual shingles, versus wood, and a more insulated interior. I really loved the look of this house. It was perfect! But it's quality was undeniably the worst I've ever seen. If they'd opt for sturdier wood, a better finish, and a more secure floor construction they'd have a great design! But when it's built this way, it's definitely not worth one penny. ... show more

  • Looks Nice, Light Duty
Color: Walnut/Dark Brown Size: Large Style: Extreme Outdoor Log Cabin
The dog house looks nice and was easy to put together. It is lighter weight than expected. If you have a medium size older dog that is very easy on equipment and have the dog house mostly out of the elements it will probably last awhile. A litter or puppies or rougher dog will quickly tear up the 1/4 inch siding and 1 inch framing. I had to shore it up with 2x4 and 2x6 internal framing and floor reinforcements to make it hold up. ... show more

  • What’s so extreme?
Color: Walnut/Dark Brown Size: Large Style: Extreme Outdoor Log Cabin
I don’t know what’s so extreme about this dog house? Maybe the price? It’s made out of thin red cedar strips, it looks great, but the siding is a little too thin for the price, in my opinion. If this were one of the houses from “The Three Little Pigs” it would be the first, maybe the second house, at best, depending on the pig’s budgets. I just know if that if the wolf had been practicing his breathing exercises this house wouldn’t stand a chance. ... show more

I bought this little dog house back in 2019. I still have it in my yard. Chihuahuas used it as did my cats.

  • Dog are happy
Color: Walnut/Dark Brown Size: Large Style: Extreme Outdoor Log Cabin
I got two of these large dog houses for a pit mix (about 50 pounds) and a dane/pit mix (about 70 pounds). The houses went together super easy, all the predrilled holes lined up perfectly. The only issue is the three-piece floor. While it could be thicker, the real problem was when my big dogs ran in to investigate, the center board shifted off the thin frame they sit on and popped up. My dogs' feet went through down to the ground. So, I pulled out my brad nailer and nailed down the flooring. I used the brads because they are very thin and won't crack the wood. There is not a lot of wood framing to hold in the floor it's very thin and would split with a regular nail. Clearly this is a cheap design flaw to an otherwise nice doghouse. However, problem solved, and my two dogs LOVE those houses, and my biggest dog has lots of room in it. ... show more

  • Arrived in good condition.
Color: Walnut/Dark Brown Size: Small Style: Outdoor Log Cabin
I purchased this item for a feral cat. I alleviated it with a pallet you can get at Home Depot for free nailing the home & pallet together. I did this to flood proof it some what. Just applied paint to the front of the pallet where it will be visible to me from my window when I look out. It also gives it a modern feel in my opinion. I insulated each wall with 1 inch reflective foam R value 6.5 to reflect the cats body heat back onto itself. I went to Home Depot and purchased Shingles to protect the roof. I was hoping this product came with Shingles but unfortunately it did not. Many dog homes in photos I’ve noticed, which are a little pricier you can find shingles on the roof. So in hopes that it will protect my cats home for a few years to come I added shingles. The roof I did not nail down because once again I am caring for a feral cat. I have plans of opening the lid every so often to do a proper cleaning. To secure the roof I’ve added a weight my husband had in the garage which he has not used in a while. I did this even though the shingles easily adds 25lbs pounds or more. I slapped some paint on the front of the house, the only thing visible once again from my window when looking out. A sticker, to be playful reminding me of my youth and a badge. My cats name is Security. I had to add a review b/c I was losing so much time fussing over which house to purchase. And it was the voices & photos of others sharing that helped me believe in this one. That it would last my cat possibly for years to come, buying me back my time. Hoping this review too will help anyone fussing over a home for a pet. I must add dogs are a little more feisty compared to cats. As you can see from others reviews listed. Do use your own discretion taking into account the personality of your fur baby. I believe this home will do the job for my adopted feral cat. I’m very pleased. ... show more
