I’ve got about a half an acre of gardens. I work outside a to expand and maintain the gardens. After 40 years, I’ve gone through a lot of tools many of which are stuffed into boxes or up on shelves. I’ve used various spades, trowels, knives, and even Hori Hori knives. I wasn’t that interested in getting another Hori Hori knife but had lost my old one, which I didn’t use much so it wasn’t much of a loss, and I decided to take a chance. I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened up the package. I’ve got a large hand, an octave on the piano, and I usually don’t fine most handles comfortable. This Hori Hori has a great handle—shaped just enough to give a good feel. It is wood and looks classy. I have several expensive leather sheaths, and in general I don’t use them because they are thick and inflexible. The package with the knife includes a thin, flexible ballistic nylon sheath. (I assume it is ballistic nylon—that’s what the term I associate with the sheath). The knife has a sharp and aggressive serrated blade. The edge cuts through vines and roots easily. I also like the notch at the bottom of the blade—an easy way to punch through small roots. The straight edge on the other side isn’t a razor, but it is pretty sharp. The blade is also curved and shaped so that I find it useful to plant bulbs. The blade is marked in five one-inch increments which helps with planting. All in all, I’m pleasantly surprised with this knife, and I’m now carrying it on a regular basis. ... show more

    • Impressive
This is a strong, hefty tool. You'd have a hard time bending or breaking it. I will use it in my garden, but I'll also be taking it on my metal-detecting trips. I also like that I can hang it on a pegboard while it is in the sheath. I wish all my metal-detecting tools were this strong. It'll also come in handy when I mow my lawn. We have a variety of weeds in Texas. The ones with painful burrs such as sand burrs, I'll stop my mower and remove them immediately. The sheath will be handy for that. The previous tools I carried to do the job would have to be carried in a pocket or by hand, and they sometimes fell. I give it top marks all around. It's very nice. ... show more

    • Great multi-use tool for the garden
This is a great tool. Being in Wisconsin in the winter, I couldn't actually use it in the garden, but you can tell it's a great tool, made of sturdy construction. The handle feels good in my big hand. The various blades and cutting edges are handy. Having the ruler on one side is extremely useful when you're trying to dig a hole to the right size for plants and seedlings.     • HIGH Quality ... rating should be 3.5
Actual rating should be 3.5 UPDATE: On closer inspection, the problem is that the wood on the one side is in a bind because it extends to where the metal blade curves outward and can't be screwed flat, therefore if manufacturing is consistent, all of these knives will have a gap, which is bad for long term. PROS: + One of the dimensions that is seldom published and so very important is how thick the blade is. This is a nice thick piece of steel (110mils, it will take a lot of force to bend this) + The knife has all the features you want for planting. + The handle has a smooth finish and is formed perfectly to the edges of the tang (metal under the wood) so there aren't any edges to abrade hands or gloves. + The sheath is barely has a friction fit to hold the blade, it is sewn and riveted and looks like it should last a long time. CONS: - On one of the scales, the last 1.25" does not lay perfectly flat against the metal. That gap is about 0.035mils (5 sheets of paper can slide into it) and undesirable because dirt or moisture can get trapped under the handle. The scales are screwed to the tang so I'm hoping I can loosen the one side and apply some epoxy to fill the gap. Since I like to wash my garden/yard tools after using, I prefer they don't trap moisture. ... show more

I've been involved in metal detecting for over 12 years, and I've broke a few digging tools. This looks to be a well made full tang utility tool. It's got a hole for a lanyard. Two sharp edges to cut sod plugs, and deal with roots on the serrated side. I only hope I don't end up scratching coins with it, but honestly I don't really do that now with a lesch tool- I'm giving this tool five out of five because it's a winner! Really effective for breaking dry, tough earth and turning the soil. The handle looks cool, feels comfortable and is quite sturdy. If you're working on a raised bed or some potten plants, there are a lot of handy features, including for measuring growth. Great for weeding as well. I recently took a well known flower grower's online course, and she highly recommends using a Hori Hori knife for transplanting seedlings into their outside bed. This one is better than I could have imagined. It's solid with a smooth wooden handle, very sharp edges on both sides (I believe they are beveled), with measurements marked on the blade so you know how far down into the ground you are digging. My wife uses this - as she is an avid gardener, and has the 'green thumb' in our family. This garden knife comes in an attractive sheath - that will make the neighbors think you are walking around with a commando or hunting knife.
