  • Fit my BMW airhead well - useful size, good quality, smart appearance Fit my BMW airhead well - useful size, good quality, smart appearance
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
I bought these for my 1986 BMW R65 airhead. I wanted soft panniers, unlike the vintage BMW hard cases. I'm generally a fan of Chase Harper (I have two of their tank bags) and these bags work well, with a few modifications. I have standard BMW pannier racks on the bike. These bags are about the same size as the vintage hard cases, but have straps that tie onto the racks and go over the seat. As the photos show, they look good on the bike. To make them work, I had to do a couple of things. First, I had to make the back over-seat strap a little longer. I did that with some strap material and velcro I had on hand. Second, I needed a way to keep the bags firmly situated side to side. In other words, with the existing buckle straps, I could tie on to the racks, but there was nothing to keep one bag from going up while the other went down and vice versa. So as a second modification, I added a buckle to the inside wall of each bag pointing down, such that that attached to the bottom of the pannier rack. With that, I could achieve stability. I sewed the strap onto the back of each pannier with a sailmaker's awl (I am no artiste with the needle and I don't have a free-arm sewing machine). As a result, I can pinch three clips on each side and lift both bags right off the bike. That's super convenient. I also added a velcro strip to each of the straps that tie onto the rack, to keep them from falling off if I remove the bags and then ride the bike (like I might do on a camping trip). Note to Chase Harper: it would be great if you put a few more attachment points, like D rings in more places. It would also be great if you just put a buckle on the bottom/back of the bag. I've looked at a lot of soft panniers for the bike, and these are actually really nice. The over-seat strap takes most of the weight, which alleviates concerns about stress on the racks. At 20L apiece, they hold a decent amount of gear for a weekend trip and there's room for a bag to sit on the pillion seat. It would be great if they were actually waterproof, but I'm willing to pack thing that don't matter or use individual waterproof bags for things that do. Some folks have noted that the inner stiffener gets kind of out of shape. My bags were shipped one inside the other, and the inside one was squashed. I removed both (in order to do my sewing) and found that I could bend them back to the right shape. Then, with careful reassembly, they took on the proper form. I do like the fact that these are American-made; it definitely influences my purchase and makes me feel good about supporting a small company. ... show more

  • Great pair of saddle bags, but…
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
Why must there always be one thing to cause frustration? The adjustment for luggage rack width could not be simpler, unlike other bags. You can actually mount it and make it fit without needing to be a contortionist. The compartments open with zippers; easy on arthritic fingers. BUT The plastic inserts to make the bags keep their shape are not stiff enough. The inside panels are concave the wrong way: they make the bottom edges actually curve right into the coil springs of the rear suspension. Yes I can push them out so they’ll be flat, and stay away from the coil springs, but they curve right back the wrong way. Now I have to shop around for a couple of sheets of plexiglass and then figure out how to shove them in place behind the panels that are already inserted into the bags. UGH!!! ... show more

  • Top quality
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
These bags are excellent quality, look nice, and have several great features. They are so sturdy, and quality zippers and fasteners. The one thing my husband mentioned he wished they had was a fastener tab at the bottom to hold the bag close to the bike for higher speeds. He found a work around to solve that. Also, these are meant to be removed, but he mounted them to stay on permanently since he doesn't need to take them in with him daily. This feature would be super handy if you were on a road trip, however, because the bags could as much as a backpack. They are great soft side bags and we would recommend them. ... show more

  • Pretty awesome throw over bag Pretty awesome throw over bag
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
Together these 2 bags are about as roomy as an airline carry on bag. I liked that they attached to each other with wide velcro straps. What I loved about them was the quick snap straps that could cinch them to my bike frame. Outer zipper pockets to hold Rain gear and a selfie stick. Seemed very durable. Water resistant is probably accurate, I got caught in a few deluges - my gear was in plastic liners inside and the minimal moisture that got through the bag didn't go through the plastic. I was super happy, riding with them 2200 miles. ... show more

  • Universal fit usually means it doesn’t. No exception here.
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
The bags themselves seem to be well constructed. I really appreciate the inner plastic liners that help the bags keep their shape. It was this feature that allowed me to drill two holes through the plastic from the inside on each bag. I fastened the bags with 1/4-20x 1-1/2 screws directly to the metal bag supports that were already on the bike. The straps that come with the bags served me no purpose whatsoever. They were either too short, or they were positioned in a way that didn’t allow the bags to be suitably mounted for my setup. I am pleased that I was able to find a way to secure them, because I really like the bags. I haven’t ridden in wet conditions yet, so I can’t vouch for water resistance. I would buy again. ... show more

  • Nice Large Saddle Bags Nice Large Saddle Bags
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
The Chase Harper USA 3550 Aeropac II Saddle Bags are more roomy than most hard leather bags with each bag holding 20 liters. This is partly due to their rectangular shape instead of the common slanted shape of most bags. And though the bags are made of ballistic nylon, each bag has a thermo-plastic insert that makes the bags sturdy with a solid bottom and keeps the shape of the bags permanent. Made out of ballistic nylon they are strong and will last for several years. They are water resistant, but in heavy rain, do need a water proof covering (which unfortunately is not included). They are easy to put on and take off which I greatly appreciate as I only use them when needed for trips or shopping (My 51 liter Tail Top Case is always on and meets most needs), The piping strips shine out brightly. They also have front and back securing buckle straps that help secure the bags and provide a quick release to take the bags off. The top opening has double zippers that allow a small luggage lock to help secure your belongings. The over-the- fender velcro straps firmly hold the bags, no worries of them coming loose. Some reviewers mention that their bags have faided/turned colors, but that can easily be taken care of with products such as Rit's Back-To-Black dye. Yes, they are not as stylish as leather saddle bags; on the other hand they are [1] way less expensive, [2] hold more than most other saddle bags, [3] are distinctly lighter and [4] can be quickly removed and secured in your motel room, etc. These bags are well worth their price. ... show more

  • Great little versatile bags
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
I have gone through 2 sets of the Motorcycle Classics/Amazon Basics bags over the past few years, which I liked a lot. However, they do tend to wear out fairly fast with heavy use, so I figured I'd try these. So far I really love them. Easier to install than the Amazon bags, and more capacity. Plus, they just seem better built and more sturdy. If I get a few years out of them I'll be super happy, and my initial impression is very positive. ... show more

  • Good value for the money
Size: 3550 Aeropac II
WYSIWYG, these are quality bags and one year on are still holding up great, with two caveats. We get a LOT of sun here in Las Vegas, and they're starting to turn brown rather than black. Also more an annoyance than anything else, but these bags are both the same size. They were shipped to me one inside the other! The one they crammed inside the other has always been a bit lopsided, and there's nothing I can do about that. For the most part though they're great! The top velcro straps were not nearly long enough to fit across my Africa Twin with pannier mounts, so I had to cut them off and fabricate brackets (drilling holes through the bags) to make them fit. Not the bags' fault, I don't think they were meant for this application. Just know they're not designed for a pannier rack, but for laying over the back seat of a more standard bike. ... show more
