  • Great size for a betta
Size: 5 Gallon
Beautiful glass aquarium with a really simple design. The front has rounded corners and the lid consists of a simple, flat sheet of acrylic that you affix to the tank with hinges. This does leave a small gap near the back of the tank (maybe an inch wide), but that's convenient for both the internal filter and any heaters you may want to add. It may be prudent to leave an inch less of water in the tank or so in case there are any jumpers to be safe. The light it came with is pretty weak, and as noted by another reviewer there is no switch or button to press to turn it off - it has to be perpetually on or you have to unplug it. I have a single male betta strutting around this tank and he seems to like shade, so I don't use it at all. The filter is surprisingly quiet and effective - it makes a low, humming noise that I tuned out after about a day. As an internal filter, the entire thing is submerged and the water is sucked in from the bottom where it goes through a sponge, some sort of media that comes in a cartridge, and is directed out of a spout that's also under the surface of the water. The spout can be swiveled around 180 degrees so you can direct the flow wherever you want - I chose to squash the heater into the corner, then direct the filter flow into the heater/corner to both diminish the flow and spread the heat around. There are three levels of flow you can pick, but I found that even at the lowest level, it was too powerful for my betta. This was easily fixed by attaching a little piece of aquarium sponge about a centimeter in front of the spout to dissipate the flow a bit. It works really well! Now the flow is so gentle that Bruce (of Batman fame) regularly perches and sleeps on top of the sponge. I assume he's brooding over his little hut and plants. 5 pounds of gravel was perfect for this size. It's also worth noting that when I ordered this tank from amazon, it was truly pitifully packaged and arrived basically as a box full of broken glass. Just something to keep in mind. ... show more

  • Beautiful tank! Beautiful tank!
Size: 10 Gallon
I love this aquarium. I purchased this for my dragon scale betta and hope to add some cory cats or shrimp...not sure which. I received the package and noted that it was in perfect condition. I opened the large outer box, which was marked with the Penn Plax name and logo to find a slightly smaller box with large bubble packs between it and the larger box. This box was unmarked. Inside the smaller box was the 10 gallon aquarium, safe and unbroken. Contents included the 10 gallon aquarium, rubber mat, plastic cover, correct left and right hinges for cover, light and Cascade 300 Internal filter. The aquarium is perfect...the silicone was applied evenly with no excess...the bottom was aligned with the main glass smoothly. The rubber mat is slightly larger than the tank so I set it so the excess was at the back. The lid so far servers its purpose...I only wish they added a plastic/tpu add on that could be modified/cut for cables etc so that there isn't about a 2 inch gap...Kind of what you would see on traditional tank glass lids. The light...I didn't bother with it. I find it inconvenient to have to unplug it every time...I ended up getting the Nicrew LED Aquarium light with Extendable brackets on a lightening deal. With the way the holders work on the brackets, i simply extend them and they attach to the sides and cover just fine. However, if I lift the lid the light slides to the back...so I just do it before.. The Cascade 300 Internal filter is ok. I like that it has two chambers that can be customized...for example, the bottom chamber has a sponge and the middle chamber has a cartridge with carbon...that chamber can be opened and the carbon replaced. Or you can do what I did...since the sponge chamber has a large opening in the center tube, allowing water to bypass the sponge, I purchased TAAM Rio Micro Pad and cut it to the shape of the filter...unfortunately, I will need to modify the outlet as the flow, even on the lowest, setting sends my betta drifting...I do wish they had made the whole filter black as the blue is a bit distracting and takes away from the rest of the tank, plants, fish, etc. I plan to aquascape in the Iwagumi style created by Takashi Amano...I have Eco-Complete black Substrate for plants and 7 Yamaya stones (they are inert and will not affect water chemistry). Will post more pics later. I would definitely recommend this tank. ... show more

  • It's all good but the light. Noisy filter.
Here we go! TANK: Overall it's a very clean design, and looks fine. The glass is 0.160" thick, which is a little thin, but given the small size of the tank it's probably just fine. The front and sides are a single piece that has been bent to provide the curved corners. The back is glass of 0.15"+ thickness (probably the same spec glass, but just natural thickness variance). The bottom is also glass, looks thicker, but I didn't try to measure it. The front and sides glass butt-joins to the rear plate using what looks like standard clear silicone sealant. That assembly is then butted onto the top of the bottom plate using silicone sealer again. Simple as can be, no frame. It does come with a (some kind of foam-rubber) mat you should put it on to minimize stresses from placement on an uneven surface. The mat is a little oversized (good), and if that bothers you it can be trimmed with an X-Acto knife once it settles in. I poured in the last of my ADA Amazonia substrate before filling the tank (OOPS! I should have leak tested it before adding substrate! But I got lucky - no leaks). So that came to 1-1/2" of substrate on the bottom. I added 3 1-gallon jugs of treated water, which brought the water level up to 3/4" from the rimless top. I figure if I had a normal 2" of substrate it would fill to about 1/2" from the top with exactly 3 gallons. I'll grant them the 3.4 gallon rating without substrate, but exactly 3 is an easy number to work with. LID: Plastic, 0.080" thick, no frame. It leaves 1-1/4" inch open along the rear. The clip-on hinges are also plastic, and hold the lid up where you leave it by friction (the plastic lid is very light weight, so it won't fall closed if you let go of it). A pet could easily open this with a paw, and it will stay open... As with the tank, it's a clean, simple design. The lid (actually, the hinges) can be slid forward on the side plates so the lid can be made to overhang the front of the tank, providing a larger gap at the rear (and can also slide back to close the rear gap and make one at the front if anyone has a reason to want that). Day 2 EDIT: The lid hinges are not as stiff as I thought. The lid does not stay where you leave it unless it's almost fully open. This helps make it harder for pets, but now you really do have to move that light out of the way to open the lid enough to do anything. LIGHT: Throw it away! Read my issues below, then order something else without even waiting to see for yourself. Brave words, but the points below are deal breakers for me. Especially #2 & 3. Instant death! -- 1. It has no on/off switch - you gotta unplug it to turn it off. (Most of us use timers, so maybe that's OK?) -- 2. It is on a flimsy neck that simply can't be positioned where you try to adjust it. It just shifts around by itself even if you get it where you want it. -- 3. The lid CANNOT BE OPENED without pushing the light out of the way. Since you won't be able to get the light back where you had it (assuming you were able to get it positioned well in the first place) this will be good for endless hours of frustration. -- 4. If this thing is bright enough to grow any plants I'll eat my Prime membership! But it doesn't claim to be, so just be aware. Day 2 EDIT: Now that the cloudiness from the ADA Amazonia substrate has cleared, and I've moved a few items into the tank - I can plainly see that the light is not even enough to "show" your tank, let alone keep plants alive. Jeez! This light is totally useless. I'm hanging a PAR 20 6500K LED light over it (pendant style) to be done with it (less than 10W consumption, 50W equivalent lux) I'll just adjust the height as needed. FILTER: I've used this type before, and had no issues with it. You get only the small sponge, which I'm personally fine with. I don't use charcoal in my filters because I worry that it may deactivate some plant fertilizer trace elements. And I find that the sponges harbor enough bacteria to not need additional ceramic "bio balls". I'm also of the school that believes bacteria live in the substrate too. So sponge filters are fine by me. If you are not planning on planting, and if you believe in using carbon as part of you filtration, then be aware that this filter has only a small volume to be shared by whatever you want to put in there with the sponge (you'll have to cut down the sponge to add anything else). Day 2 EDIT: The tank is set up next to my bed. This little filter is way noisier than it needs to be. I've replaced it with a single sponge filter with an air pump. (Remember, I'm doing a planted tank with 2 small feeder goldfish, 2 small feeder guppies, and 2 feeder ghost shrimp.) OVERALL: This is a realy nice little tank, and I'm going to be happy with it (with a different light). Cosmetically it's pleasing. I took 3/4 star away because of the counter-productive light. I took 1/4 star away for price/value. Let me make myself clear here - this is a great tank for maybe $30.00, but it's just a bit too pricey for what you get (especially since you WILL need to purchase another light). I sensed this when I ordered it, so I'm good with it, but if price is important you can probably go down to your Local Fish Store and get a 10 gallon glass tank for $10-$15, and a sponge filter and air pump for $15. I'm not counting the price of the light since you need to buy one in both cases. So you could save about $20 if you don't want this specific tank. I got it because I like the form factor and looks of it, and it delivered for me on that count. Day 2 EDIT: Obviously the value proposition has decreased for me personally since I can't use the included filter due to noise. Now it's just a plain 3 gallon tank for $50. I stll like it cosmetically, and am definitely keeping it. If there is a way to purchase just the tank I didn't find it, but you should look again before you get this "kit". ... show more

  • Tank alone is worth the price. Tank alone is worth the price.
Since this tank comes as a kit, I will rate each component individually. Tank: 5/5 Glass is good quality and thicker than I thought it would be, clarity is good, seams are nice, top edges are smoothed over and clean. It also comes with a closed cell foam mat to place the tank on which is a nice addition. (Be sure not to throw this out with the packaging!)I wouldn’t change anything about it. This tank alone is worth the price. Top: 3/5 Flimsy plastic, but it serves its intended purpose. The hinges are nice and mount securely. It may not do much to help evaporation, but it will keep your fish in the tank. I didn’t use it for my application, but it’s a nice addition to a rimless tank. I’d like to see it made out of glass. Filter: 4/5 The filter is cheaply made, but it works. It’s basically just a tiny pump with a sponge attached over the intake, which is perfectly adequate for this size tank. It provides good mechanical and biological filtration. The noise that other reviewers are complaining about comes from the air intake on the return which is not really necessary. Simply plug the nipple where the tube attaches and it’ll run near silent. It would be nice if they included a second return without the air intake, but the one it comes with is easily modified. Light: 2/5 It works, but the armature is flimsy and it is not very bright. It could be okay for a betta or something, but it is still not really bright enough to show off the tank as well as I would like. It definitely would not support even the lowest light plants. If you plan on keeping live plants in this tank, you will absolutely need to purchase a different light fixture. I did not use the included light after the initial setup of the tank, but it was helpful while aquascaping since it’s so small and stayed out of my way. Overall: 5/5 I really only purchased this kit for the tank alone, and I am very pleased. The tank alone is more than worth the price of the kit, so everything else included is kind of a bonus. The attached picture is my tank 2 months after initial setup. The plants are Staurogyne repens, and the livestock are Neocaridina davidii (freshwater dwarf shrimp). The light pictured is not included with the kit. Disclaimer: I am a professional in the aquarium industry. My experience with the product may differ from that of a beginner aquarist. I did not receive any kind of discount or compensation for this review. I purchased this tank at full price for my personal use. ... show more

  • Great tank
There were many mixed reviews about this aquarium so I was pretty hesitant to purchase it, considering I had to purchase two after my impulse purchase of male bettas.. I did a lot of searching to see what was out there and what would be best for my new additions, and this sounded like the best option since I don’t have enough space for two five gallon tanks. It’s a beautiful design, well packaged on Penn Plax’s part, (I purchased other stuff to go in the tank, it all came in one large box that was half opened on my front porch...) it had a cardboard box over the top and over the bottom, held together with two straps of whatever that plastic stuff is, and had the light and filter contained in another partial cardboard box inside of the tanks, and of course the tanks were in their own individual cardboard boxes inside of the large one. Along with the light and the filter, you are also provided a piece of foam in the bottom of your box to put under your tanks to protect the surfaces you put them on, so be sure to pull that out before tossing the cardboard! The filter didn’t come with instructions that were very helpful so I tried to go off of the other pictures people have posted on how to install it, and it seems fine. I’ll likely upgrade those as well as the lights that came with it, as they’re not the greatest lights and the only way to turn them off or on is to unplug them, which can be a little annoying. I read a review about the lid that comes with it, saying it was not form-fitting, but mine turned out to be perfectly sized. The downside to the lid is that it’s kind of easy to slide it forward out of its latches so my cat has tried to take advantage of that. The only thing I was not excited about was that the cardboard inside the tanks that held the filters and lights was hot glued to the bottom, so I struggled a little to get it out. Overall, it’s a great little tank for a great price, and my bettas love it, they spend hours swimming around the whole tank, exploring and whatnot. Would definitely suggest purchasing this tank! Keep in mind though, you’re having something relatively fragile shipped through the mail, so there’s always the possibility of it arriving broken, so don’t let that discourage you. ... show more

  • Beautiful aquarium
Size: 5 Gallon
I absolutely love this aquarium. I only had so much space in my coffee bar to put one of my Betta's and this fit perfectly and gave him the 5 gal size that I was wanting. It is rimless and just beautiful. The tank lid is just a piece of glass that sits on some clips, but it is working out fine. There are some small openings, but that actually makes it super easy to feed. I did have to order a different light, due to there was a shelf above and the light that came with it, went too high. I also switched out the filter to a sponge one with a pump I really like. The one that came with it probably ran ok, but I just prefer sponge ones. My Betta is very happy in it. The hardest thing with it, was getting it out of the packaging. It was glued way too much. But I would buy it again and deal with that, since I like it so much. ... show more

  • Excellent aquarium! Accessories are a little weak
Size: 7.5 Gallon
The aquarium arrived in excellent packaging (many layers!) The rounded front is very stylish compared to a traditional rectangle. The aquarium itself is exactly what was advertised and is very nice. The accessories are a little on the weak side: *The light is a little flimsy and has no switch that I can find. The only way to turn it off is to unplug it *The water filter produces a VERY strong current for the size of the tank. My fish and shrimp were completely overwhelmed so i switched to a different filter. *The lid is just a bare piece of glass that rests on two plastic lips that aren't attached to anything and hang at a droopy angle from the side of the aquarium. ... show more

  • Only Buy For the Tank Only Buy For the Tank
Size: 10 Gallon
Like other reviews have said: the flimsy plastic lid top and LED light with no power switch are rubbish and should go in the trash. Buy a proper LED overhead light and install a glass canopy cover if you want any chance of growing live plants. The filter is also bullocks. Buy the tidal 35 filter instead. On the other hand, the aquarium tank is nice with the curved front glass with no silicone seams. Note that the back panel and bottom are separate panes of glass that have silicone sealing the edges. Make sure you water test the tank for 24 hours, before you decide to place it in it's permanent spot (pic 3). I bought vinyl rubber feet from Homey Depot and attached them to the base to allow for water evaporation in case water spills on the desk and rolls under the tank (pic 5). Homey Depot has 90 degree clear plastic vinyl (paint dept.) that I glued with 100% clear silicone for my custom hinges (pic 4). The hardware store sells two types: clear vinyl plastic with glue strips already on or no glue strips. I purchased the one with glue strips (pic 4), but in hind sight the glue strips are not sticky enough for a strong glass bond, so I had to return them and get the vinyl plastic with no glue strips. Then I used 100% clear GE silicone to glue the vinyl plastic to the glass aquarium lid cover (pic 1). Your local glass shop can custom cut you two nice pieces of clear glass (3mm thick or 1/8" thick) for 10 bucks. You want at least that thick so the glass sits solid on the top of the tank, without moving around. My glass shop was able to round the glass corners at the front for a custom fit over the tank (pic 1). Don't forget to tell the glass shop to make the sides and corners smooth, so you don't cut yourself when handling the glass. Lowes will cut glass for you, but they don't have the tools to round out the corners and their glass is thin. Now I have two nice separate pieces of glass with no ugly black hinge in the middle, so that I can have a nice view from the top and I can lift the front panel for feedings and plant maintenance (pic 2). I purchased Plasti Dip 11252-6 Flex Blue Spray Paint from Amazon and painted the back panel to hide the filter and heater, when viewing from the front (pic 2). Local department stores don't carry that color blue, because it's a slow mover for them, so they mostly carry white or black Plasti Dip. I had to order my can on Amazon. I also ordered the Marineland Perfecto Glass Canopy Handle on Amazon for $7. Just remove the backer lining and stick it on top of the glass. That adhesive is super strong, so just press down for 60 seconds and it will grab on the glass like nobody's business. The tank comes with a foam mat, but I decided not to use it. The black mat is thin and looks like it will absorb and retain water moisture, which is something I don't want ruining the wood top of my desk. I bought the Dahle Vantage 10671 Self Healing Cut Mat 12"x18" in black and that Mat fits perfect under the tank. Since that mat is made of plastic, the water rolls right off of it and it doesn't absorb moisture and smells like a foam mat would. Plus one swipe of a towel over the plastic mat makes for easy clean ups. If you love the tank, but not the cheap extras, then I would suggest the waterbox 10 gallon rimless on sale at Petco for $59. Click helpful if this info was awesome for you. Cheers : ) ... show more
